    Get PDF
This paper deals with the study on the effect of biological degradation to chemical composition and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) of sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) fibers obtained from different heights (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 m) of the sugar palm tree. It was observed that degradation that took place at the bottom part of the sugar palm trunk affected the chemical composition of its fiber. It was noticed that cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin contents increased with the increase of the tree height. A good correlation between chemical composition and mechanical properties of sugar palm fiber was found where cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses show a significant contribution to the increase in tensile strength, modulus, and elongation at break of the fiber, respectively. For the fibers obtained from higher height, it was observed that cellulose and hemicelluloses contents slightly decreased. High ash content for fibers obtained from 1 m height resulted in low moisture content and significant increase in its thermal stability. In FT-IR study, it was determined that the relative absorbance in sugar palm fibers was no different in all fibers

Potential application of LDPE plastic waste into tiles

    Get PDF
Plastic has interesting characteristics which makes it the most used material in the world. However, plastic is known to be a non-biodegradable material which unable to naturally decompost in soil and thus contribute to environmental issue. As alternative, plastic waste has been recycled to produce quality and sustainable construction materials as the source is abundant. Thus, this study is carried out to utilize plastic waste particularly low density polyethylene (LDPE) and with sand in manufacturing tiles in two different sand and plastic waste ratios of 2:1 and 2:2. The tiles manufactured were further analyzed for their water absorption and compressive strength. It was found that the tiles made of mixture ratio of 2:2 have higher compressive strength and lower weight compared to that of 2:1 ratio. The average weight of tiles for 2:1 ratio was 891.59 g, while ratio 2:2 produced tiles with weight of 1319.5 g. Tiles manufactured from the plastic waste also showed better water absorption and compressive strength compared to normal cement tiles

The memory effect of calcined zinc hydroxide nitrate, with gallate anion solutions, was studied. The layered hydroxide salt material, zinc hydroxide nitrate was heat-treated at 150–800 °C. XRD analysis showed the growth of the calcined materials in both thickness and diameter occurring simultaneously with increasing calcination temperature. Surface area analysis confirmed this growth. The rehydration behavior of the calcined material was investigated by placing the material in a solution containing gallate anions. The best result for layered hydroxide salt phase reconstruction was obtained for a sample heated at 500 °C and treated with 0.1 mol L−1 anion. PXRD analysis showed the formation of a layered structure material after rehydration process. FTIR and TG confirmed the formation of the host–guest nanohybrid material produced

    Get PDF
This study discusses the theoretical constraints in understanding the program of Bandung Regency’s Environment Agency related to waste problems, how it is implemented, especially in Kamasan Village, Banjaran District, Bandung Regency and the supporting and inhibiting factors that occur in the village Kamasan, Banjaran District, Bandung Regency. This research refers to Talcott Parsons's theory of Structural Functionalism. Talcott Parsons is famous for four functional imperatives for the "action" system, namely AGIL scheme. Parsons believes that there are four functional imperatives that are needed or become characteristic of the whole system, namely: adaptation, achievement of goals, integration and maintenance of patterns. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The data source in this study uses primary and secondary data sources. Data collection techniques are carried out by observation, in-depth interviews with informants and documentation. Analysis of the data used is data reduction, data display, drawing conclusions and verification. The location chosen as the research object is Village Kamasan, Banjaran District, Bandung Regency. The research results prove that by implementing the Zero Waste program at the community units (RW) level, the society can process the waste into zero and can utilize the waste efficiently

Gratitude, gratitude intervention and well-being in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Gratitude has generally been neglected by psychologists due to the emphasis on the medical model. A dearth of research on gratitude in Malaysia was the main impetus for these studies. Study 1 compared the gratitude scores Malaysian Malays against the US, UK, China and Japan, along an individualist-collective continuum, and results showed Malays had lower gratitude scores than the others, except for the Japanese. To increase their gratitude scores, Study 2 carried out an intervention using ‘the three good things’ exercise on 59 students over a period of 14 days. The intervention increased gratitude and life satisfaction as well as reduced distress. Furthermore, a hierarchical regression examining the effect of gratitude on well-being controlling for measures of affect and religiosity at Time 1, showed that Time-2 gratitude was only predictive of Time-2 distress. The results are discussed with respect to the collectivist culture of the Malays where negative aspects of the self are valued as a form of self-criticism to help one to constantly improve oneself. Two main implications are noted: that there are cross-cultural differences in the way gratitude is understood and expressed in the Malay culture, and that engaging in positive activity may sometimes be counterproductive to well-being
