    [Resumen] La trombosis venosa profunda y el tromboembolismo pulmonar son dos presentaciones de la misma enfermedad, la enfermedad tromboembólica venosa. Su alta incidencia entre la población anciana junto con numerosos factores de riesgo asociados y la dificultad del diagnóstico hacen de este un importante problema de salud. El objetivo del presente estudio de revisión es analizar las características de las personas mayores que presentan una enfermedad tromboembólica venosa, así como conocer la actuación diagnóstica y terapéutica utilizada en la actualidad.[Abstract] Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism are two states of the same disease, the venous thrombotic disease. Its high incidents among the elderly with a number of other risk factors associated and the difficulty of the diagnosis makes this a serious health problem.     Evidence of the presence of nucleic acids and β-glucan in the matrix of non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae in vitro biofilms

    13 p.-9 fig.Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a Gram-negative bacterium that frequently colonizes the human nasopharynx; it is a common cause of chronic and recurrent otitis media in children and of exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. To date, no exopolysaccharide clearly contributing to NTHi biofilms has been identified. Consequently, there is some debate as to whether NTHi forms biofilms during colonization and infection. The present work shows that NTHi can form biofilms in vitro, producing an extracellular matrix composed of proteins, nucleic acids, and a β-glucan. Extracellular DNA, visualized by immunostaining and using fluorochromes, is an important component of this matrix and appears to be essential in biofilm maintenance. Extracellular RNA appears to be required only in the first steps of biofilm formation. Evidence of a matrix polysaccharide was obtained by staining with Calcofluor white M2R and by disaggregating biofilms with cellulase. Using strain 54997, residues of Glcp(1→4) in the NTHi biofilm were confirmed by gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Evidence that N-acetyl-L-cysteine shows notable killing activity towards in vitro NTHi biofilm-forming bacteria is also provided.This work was supported by a grant from the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (SAF2012-39444-C02-01).     Seaweed-derived proteins and peptides: promising marine bioactives

    Seaweeds are a typical food of East-Asian cuisine, to which are alleged several beneficial health effects have been attributed. Their availability and their nutritional and chemical composition have favored the increase in its consumption worldwide, as well as a focus of research due to their bioactive properties. In this regard, seaweed proteins are nutritionally valuable and comprise several specific enzymes, glycoproteins, cell wall-attached proteins, red algae phycobiliproteins, lectins, peptides, or mycosporine-like amino acids. This great extent of molecules has been reported to exert significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, or antitumoral properties. Hence, knowledge on algae proteins and derived compounds have gained special interest for the potential nutraceutical, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industries based on these bioactivities. Although several molecular mechanisms of action on how these proteins and peptides exert biological activities have been described, many gaps in knowledge still need to be filled. Updating the current knowledge related to seaweed proteins and peptides is of interest to further asses their potential health benefits.     Protein oxidation in muscle foods: a comprehensive review

    Muscle foods and their products are a fundamental part of the human diet. The high protein content found in muscle foods, as well as the high content of essential amino acids, provides an appropriate composition to complete the nutritional requirements of humans. However, due to their special composition, they are susceptible to oxidative degradation. In this sense, proteins are highly susceptible to oxidative reactions. However, in contrast to lipid oxidation, which has been studied in depth for decades, protein oxidation of muscle foods has been investigated much less. Moreover, these reactions have an important influence on the quality of muscle foods, from physico-chemical, techno-functional, and nutritional perspectives. In this regard, the loss of essential nutrients, the impairment of texture, water-holding capacity, color and flavor, and the formation of toxic substances are some of the direct consequences of protein oxidation. The loss of quality for muscle foods results in consumer rejection and substantial levels of economic losses, and thus the control of oxidative processes is of vital importance for the food industry. Nonetheless, the complexity of the reactions involved in protein oxidation and the many different factors that influence these reactions make the mechanisms of protein oxidation difficult to fully understand. Therefore, the present manuscript reviews the fundamental mechanisms of protein oxidation, the most important oxidative reactions, the main factors that influence protein oxidation, and the currently available analytical methods to quantify compounds derived from protein oxidation reactions.     La trombosis venosa profunda y el tromboembolismo pulmonar son dos presentaciones de la misma enfermedad, la enfermedad tromboembólica venosa. Su alta incidencia entre la población anciana junto con numerosos factores de riesgo asociados y la dificultad del diagnóstico hacen de esta un importante problema de salud con afectación directa sobre el profesional enfermero. Método: revisión de la literatura científica, incluyendo artículos publicados entre 1993 y 2013. Conclusiones: la incidencia de las enfermedades tromboembólicas se ve incrementada con la edad. Esta es aún mayor en personas que presentan factores de riesgo tales como, inmovilidad, cáncer y cirugía. Un diagnóstico y tratamiento precoz ayuda a disminuir las complicaciones y casos de mortalidad

    Micromundo@ucm: research and awareness for the stealth pandemics of antibiotic resistance

    Actualmente se estima que las resistencias antibióticas se cobran 1.270.000 vidas anualmente a nivel global. Es necesario contribuir desde multiples ángulos a preservar la efectividad de os antibióticos y descubrir nuevas etsrategias terapéuticas. MicroMundo es un proyecto de Aprendizaje-Servicio y Ciencia Ciudadana que pretende crear cultura científica y concienciación en cuestiones de Salud Global en los jóvenes. Se pretende que sean los más jóvenes, los estudiantes de ESO y Bachillerato, los responsables de la transmisión de ese conocimiento a la comunidad. Pero un segundo objetivo, no menos importante, es el de generar y potenciar vocaciones STEM e interés por el I+D en Biomedicina. Para conseguir estos objetivos, diversos equipos de estudiantes universitarios imparten y coordinan el proyecto en colegios e institutos de su comunidad, coordinados por sus tutores (profesores e investigadores del área de Microbiología de las Facultades de Farmacia, Medicina, Veterinaria y Biología, cubriendo los tres vértices del triángulo One Health: salud humana, animal y medioambiental). En la UCM, durante el curso 2021-22, treinta y dos equipos de han trabajado en unos treinta colegios e institutos, implicando a unos 600 estudiantes preuniversitarios en el trabajo experimental del proyecto.It is currently estimated that antibiotic resistance annually claims 1,270,000 lives globally. It is necessary to contribute from multiple angles to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics and discover new therapeutic strategies. MicroMundo is a Service-Learning and Citizen Science project that aims to create a scientific culture and awareness of Global Health issues among young people. It is intended that the youngest, Secondary and Baccalaureate students, be responsible for the transmission of this knowledge to the community. But a second objective, no less important, is to generate and promote STEM vocations and interest in R&D in Biomedicine. To achieve these objectives, various teams of university students teach and coordinate the project in schools and institutes in their community, coordinated by their tutors (professors and researchers from the Microbiology area of ​​the Faculties of Pharmacy, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Biology, covering the three vertices of the One Health triangle: human, animal and environmental health).
