Entrepreneurship among female immigrants. A case study in Madrid
The primary objective of this paper is to study and understand which factors determine the use or the non-use of ethnic resources in the business strategies of immigrant business women in Madrid. To achieve this goal, we studied the relationship between the structural factors of the host society, the resources that may be available to immigrant women in the context of their ethnic communities, and other individual characteristics. In this study, it is used a qualitative approach. We conducted 27 semi-structured interviews with immigrant entrepreneurs from Latin America (Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru), Africa (Morocco and Senegal), and Eastern Europe (Bulgaria and Romania). The main conclusions reveal that the difference regarding the use of ethnic resources lies in the following factors: social networks, legal status, having access to ethnic resources, business location, and entrepreneur women’s origin.pre-print229 K
Who’s Got Your Mail?:Characterizing Mail Service Provider Usage
E-mail has long been a critical component of daily communication and the core medium for modern business correspondence. While traditionally e-mail service was provisioned and implemented independently by each Internet-connected organization, increasingly this function has been outsourced to third-party services. As with many pieces of key communications infrastructure, such centralization can bring both economies of scale and shared failure risk. In this paper, we investigate this issue empirically --- providing a large-scale measurement and analysis of modern Internet e-mail service provisioning. We develop a reliable methodology to better map domains to mail service providers. We then use this approach to document the dominant and increasing role played by a handful of mail service providers and hosting companies over the past four years. Finally, we briefly explore the extent to which nationality (and hence legal jurisdiction) plays a role in such mail provisioning decisions
Forward Pass: On the Security Implications of Email Forwarding Mechanism and Policy
The critical role played by email has led to a range of extension protocols
(e.g., SPF, DKIM, DMARC) designed to protect against the spoofing of email
sender domains. These protocols are complex as is, but are further complicated
by automated email forwarding -- used by individual users to manage multiple
accounts and by mailing lists to redistribute messages. In this paper, we
explore how such email forwarding and its implementations can break the
implicit assumptions in widely deployed anti-spoofing protocols. Using
large-scale empirical measurements of 20 email forwarding services (16 leading
email providers and four popular mailing list services), we identify a range of
security issues rooted in forwarding behavior and show how they can be combined
to reliably evade existing anti-spoofing controls. We show how this allows
attackers to not only deliver spoofed email messages to prominent email
providers (e.g., Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, and Zoho), but also reliably spoof
email on behalf of tens of thousands of popular domains including sensitive
domains used by organizations in government (e.g., state.gov), finance (e.g.,
transunion.com), law (e.g., perkinscoie.com) and news (e.g.,
washingtonpost.com) among others

Prioritizing Security Practices via Large-Scale Measurement of User Behavior
Security is an ever growing concern for daily Internet users, especially sincemany facets of a user's daily interactions (banking, commerce, workplace) are
now accessed via the Internet. Fortunately, recent technical advancements – such
as encrypted web browsing, email spam filtering, and login two factor
authentication – have increased the accessibility and practicality of security
for users. However, studies show that the majority of exploited attacks take
advantage of the human in the loop. Technology and humans are required to work
in harmony for security to be effective. As a result, it is crucial that we
understand the extent to which users follow best practices, and that we evaluate
whether their behaviors in fact help prevent adverse security outcomes. In this
dissertation, I argue that large-scale empirical measurement is a practical and
effective technique to answer these questions as the basis for prioritizing
security practices, and I support this argument with three different projects.
First, I use network traffic data and measurement methods to quantify user
behavior ``best practices'' and how they relate to an outcome (in this case,
compromise). Next I examine how communication about a security policy change can
affect an organization by analyzing large-scale organizational data. Finally, I
quantify attacker behavior in the “Hack for Hire” market by hiring and
monitoring attackers, which provides insight into which defenses to prioritize
for better protecting users from these types of attacks. By empirically
understanding and prioritizing effective security practices, we can further
improve security for users
