Using data mining techniques to road safety improvement in Spanish roads

[EN] Crashes are events that involve the interaction of different components: road, driver, vehicle and environment. Nevertheless, road is an essential component and improvements on road conditions are directly related to increased traffic safety. From 2008 to 2010 a road safety inspection project was developed, whose aim was to identify and collect information about hazardous points on the Complementary Road Network of Andalusia, Spain, and build a database with this information. These elements were technically called Susceptible Elements of Improvement (ESM), which are defined as elements on the road that show worse road conditions than the ideal road safety standards. The main objective of this paper is to study the relationship between ESMs, number of crashes and hazardous sections, by analysing the information gathered in this database with advanced data mining techniques. Economically, this project is rather beneficial, since the resources of governments are limited, and therefore, it is necessary to intervene in those sections that have a higher cost-effectiveness ratio. Therefore, these relationships between roads conditions and crashes will be identified by analysing the information available in this data set of the Government of Andalusia, which has not been previously used. Harassment patterns and risk profile in Spanish trans person

    Get PDF
This article describes the harassment patterns and the risk profile in trans people living in Spain. A sample of 212 trans persons, aged 10-62, participated in this cross-sectional study. Results showed a high percentage of harassment (59.9%) and frequency of daily harassment (12.6%), especially verbal attacks (59%) that occurred in public spaces (49.1%) and within educational contexts (46.2%). Harassment is more prevalent in trans women than men. Those who disclose their gender identities at a younger age experience higher percentages and frequency of harassment than those who disclose at an older age. They also suffer more harassment of different types. The risk profile of harassment indicates that older trans women are more likely to suffer harassment than younger ones, and the risk decreases each year they delay their gender identity disclosure. The elimination of transphobic attitudes and the promotion of gender justice should be priority strategies in Spain

Influence of deficiencies in traffic control devices in crashes on two-lane rural roads

[EN] One of the main objectives of all public administrations is reducing traffic crashes. To this end, Road Safety Inspections (RSI) stand out as a key measure. Signaling roads is one of the foremost tasks of RSI. A road that is improperly or poorly signaled can lead to incorrect placement or maneuvers of vehicles and ambiguous situations that can increase the risk of crashes. This paper analyses the relationship between road crashes in two-lane rural highways and certain deficiencies in signaling. The results show that deficiencies such as "incomplete removal of road works markings" or "no guide sign or in incorrect position" are the ones' associated with a higher probability of crashes in two-lane rural highways. In view of these results, governmental agencies should verify that the original conditions of a highway are re-established after any construction work is completed. They should also continuously follow up on the signaling of this type of highway in order to maintain optimal conditions. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
