    Se analiza el impacto de condiciones climáticas extremas de los últimos años sobre los precios internacionales de los alimentos, encuadrados éstos dentro del proceso de Cambio Climático (CC). El objetivo directo es mostrar como un grupo de sequías en regiones productoras de granos puede inestabilizar el precio de los mismos y su impacto en la seguridad alimentaria global. Se utilizan métodos estadísticos corrientes de series temporales. En el trabajo se muestra que el alza de precios de los alimentos manifiesta como una función de Dirac fueron resultados de una sequía intensa ocurrida simultáneamente en diversas regiones de la Tierra y muertes masivas de especies animales, sumado a un efecto especulativo. Los dos primeros factores configuran un cuadro de inestabilidad ambiental que puede estar asociado al CC y la destrucción de la capa de ozono que habría permitido el ingreso de radiación nociva del espacio. Se concluye que las agencias estatales vinculadas al CC deberían integrar equipos multidisciplinarios que analicen los diversos factores intervinientes en la toma de decisiones políticas sobre la mitigación o atenuación de los efectos del fenómeno.     Factors associated with the performance and cost-effectiveness of using lymphatic filariasis transmission assessment surveys for monitoring soil-transmitted helminths: a case study in Kenya.

    Transmission assessment surveys (TAS) for lymphatic filariasis have been proposed as a platform to assess the impact of mass drug administration (MDA) on soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). This study used computer simulation and field data from pre- and post-MDA settings across Kenya to evaluate the performance and cost-effectiveness of the TAS design for STH assessment compared with alternative survey designs. Variations in the TAS design and different sample sizes and diagnostic methods were also evaluated. The district-level TAS design correctly classified more districts compared with standard STH designs in pre-MDA settings. Aggregating districts into larger evaluation units in a TAS design decreased performance, whereas age group sampled and sample size had minimal impact. The low diagnostic sensitivity of Kato-Katz and mini-FLOTAC methods was found to increase misclassification. We recommend using a district-level TAS among children 8-10 years of age to assess STH but suggest that key consideration is given to evaluation unit size

    Validation of a score tool for measurement of histological severity in juvenile dermatomyositis and association with clinical severity of disease.

    OBJECTIVES: To study muscle biopsy tissue from patients with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) in order to test the reliability of a score tool designed to quantify the severity of histological abnormalities when applied to biceps humeri in addition to quadriceps femoris. Additionally, to evaluate whether elements of the tool correlate with clinical measures of disease severity. METHODS: 55 patients with JDM with muscle biopsy tissue and clinical data available were included. Biopsy samples (33 quadriceps, 22 biceps) were prepared and stained using standardised protocols. A Latin square design was used by the International Juvenile Dermatomyositis Biopsy Consensus Group to score cases using our previously published score tool. Reliability was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and scorer agreement (α) by assessing variation in scorers' ratings. Scores from the most reliable tool items correlated with clinical measures of disease activity at the time of biopsy. RESULTS: Inter- and intraobserver agreement was good or high for many tool items, including overall assessment of severity using a Visual Analogue Scale. The tool functioned equally well on biceps and quadriceps samples. A modified tool using the most reliable score items showed good correlation with measures of disease activity. CONCLUSIONS: The JDM biopsy score tool has high inter- and intraobserver agreement and can be used on both biceps and quadriceps muscle tissue. Importantly, the modified tool correlates well with clinical measures of disease activity. We propose that standardised assessment of muscle biopsy tissue should be considered in diagnostic investigation and clinical trials in JDM

    Consumo de Savia por Melanerpes cactorum y su Rol en la Estructuración de Ensambles de Aves en Bosques Secos

    The White-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes cactorum) drills holes in branches and trunks to feed on sap flows, providing an energy-rich food resource for other birds. Here we describe ecological and behavioral traits of the White-fronted Woodpecker related to its sap-feeding habits in the semiarid Chaco of Argentina and explore the structure of the avian assemblage in relation to the sap resource. Sap consumption by the White-fronted Woodpecker and other sap-feeding species was strongly seasonal and positively associated with periods of resource scarcity. The White-fronted Woodpecker actively defended the sap wells from smaller birds. Specialist and facultative nectarivores that assimilate sucrose at a high rate represented an important proportion of sap-feeding birds. In this system of woodpecker, sap, and other sap-feeding species, each species’ consumption depends on its physiological and behavioral characteristics as well as on the availability of other food in the surrounding environment.Melanerpes cactorum perfora ramas y troncos de árboles y arbustos para consumir la savia que fluye de las perforaciones, posibilitando a otras especies de aves el acceso a un recurso de alto contenido energé- tico. En este estudio describimos rasgos de la historia natural de M. cactorum relacionados con su alimentación en el Chaco semiárido de Argentina e investigamos la estructuración de ensambles de aves en torno al recurso savia. Para M. cactorum y las especies de aves que consumieron savia, el consumo de savia fue marcadamente estacional, posiblemente asociado a periodos de escasez de recursos. Melanerpes cactorum defendió activamente las perforaciones ante algunas especies de aves cuya masa corporal fue menor a la de los carpinteros. Las especies nectarívoras especialistas y facultativas con alta tasa de asimilación de sacarosa representaron una importante proporción de las aves que consumieron savia. En el sistema carpinteros–savia–aves consumidoras de savia, el consumo de este recurso depende de características fisiológicas y comportamentales de las especies, como así también de la disponibilidad de otros recursos alimenticios en los ambientes que habitan.Fil: Nuñez Montellano, Maria Gabriela.     Autologous tooth graft after endodontical treated used for socket preservation: A multicenter clinical study.

    The aim of the study was to evaluate the tooth extracted use as autologous tooth graft after endodontic root canal therapies used for socket preservation. To this purpose, the Tooth Transformer shredding and decontamination machine has been used. The graft obtained in this way, was inserted at the time of the extraction or at a second surgery altogether with the chosen regenerative therapy. This clinical trial enrolled patients with post-estractive defects requiring the restoration bone dimension and shape in the maxillary and mandibular zone. In addition, 98 patients with 119 extraction sockets were enrolled across 10 standardized centers. An innovative preparation method, using the dedicated automated device Tooth Transformer, able to transform autologous teeth in suitable grafting material, has been used. The extracted tooth was cleaned and treated using a Tooth Transformer and made a socket preservation. Thirteen Biopsies were realized to analyze the histologic outcomes at the average time of four months to demonstrate that the autologous tooth graft made from root after endodontic therapy should be used in human bone regeneration as graft for dental implant placement

    Optical properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon

    A detailed study of the optical properties of sputtered hydrogenated amorphous silicon films with varying hydrogen concentration is presented here. The energy dependence of the absorption coefficient is looked into, in detail, from a point of view of understanding the well known Tauc rule and the alternate relations being proposed in recent years. Spectroscopic and band‐structural models like Wemple-Didomenico and Penn are then utilized to analyze the optical parameters near the band‐gap region of the wavelength spectra. Extensive comparisons of our results are made with those of sputtered a‐Si:H films of other workers, glow discharge prepared a‐Si:H, chemically vapor deposited and evaporated a‐Si, and also crystalline silicon. The similarities in the variation of the optical properties of a‐Si:H with increasing hydrogen concentration (or decreasing measurement temperature) to that of crystalline silicon with decreasing measurement temperature lead us to interesting conclusions. Thus, it seems that decreasing disorder (topological or thermal) in a‐Si:H is equivalent to decreasing thermal disorder in c‐Si, at least as far as the disorder‐optical property relationships are concerned

    Energy cost of ambulation in trans-tibial amputees using a dynamic-response foot with hydraulic versus rigid 'ankle': insights from body centre of mass dynamics.

    BACKGROUND:Previous research has shown that use of a dynamic-response prosthetic foot (DRF) that incorporates a small passive hydraulic ankle device (hyA-F), provides certain biomechanical benefits over using a DRF that has no ankle mechanism (rigA-F). This study investigated whether use of a hyA-F in unilateral trans-tibial amputees (UTA) additionally provides metabolic energy expenditure savings and increases the symmetry in walking kinematics, compared to rigA-F. METHODS:Nine active UTA completed treadmill walking trials at zero gradient (at 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6 of customary walking speed) and for customary walking speed only, at two angles of decline (5° and 10°). The metabolic cost of locomotion was determined using respirometry. To gain insights into the source of any metabolic savings, 3D motion capture was used to determine segment kinematics, allowing body centre of mass dynamics (BCoM), differences in inter-limb symmetry and potential for energy recovery through pendulum-like motion to be quantified for each foot type. RESULTS:During both level and decline walking, use of a hyA-F compared to rigA-F significantly reduced the total mechanical work and increased the interchange between the mechanical energies of the BCoM (recovery index), leading to a significant reduction in the metabolic energy cost of locomotion, and hence an associated increase in locomotor efficiency (p < 0.001). It also increased inter-limb symmetry (medio-lateral and progression axes, particularly when walking on a 10° decline), highlighting the improvements in gait were related to a lessening of the kinematic compensations evident when using the rigA-F. CONCLUSIONS:Findings suggest that use of a DRF that incorporates a small passive hydraulic ankle device will deliver improvements in metabolic energy expenditure and kinematics and thus should provide clinically meaningful benefits to UTAs' everyday locomotion, particularly for those who are able to walk at a range of speeds and over different terrains
