    Survey of Low Birthweight and Extremely Low Birthweight Events in a High Environmental Risk Area of Apulia, Italy

    The association between environmental conditions and pregnancy outcome has been under investigation for a long time, but results appear to be inconclusive regarding damage to either the newborn or the mother. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of hospitalization of newborns with low birthweight (< 2500 g) and extremely low birthweight (< 1000 g) in the geographical area of Taranto, Italy, which is characterized by high environmental risk because of industrial pollution. We analyzed the database of hospital discharge forms for the years 2001–2013 regarding hospital admission of newborns in the region of Apulia. The relative risk (RR) of hospitalization, adjusted for the deprivation index, was estimated using the Besag–York–Molliè Bayesian model. The city of Taranto, which has the highest environmental risk, had the highest RR for newborns with low birthweight (1.47, 95% uncertainty interval 1.38–1.56). Other geographical areas with high environmental pollution had higher RRs for low birth weight compared with the regional average. We found no geographical distribution pattern of extremely low birthweight that would suggest an association with environmental pollution

    Double- and multi-femtosecond pulses produced by birefringent crystals for the generation of 2D laser-induced structures on a stainless steel surface

    Laser-induced textures have been proven to be excellent solutions for modifying wetting, friction, biocompatibility, and optical properties of solids. The possibility to generate 2D-submicron morphologies by laser processing has been demonstrated recently. Employing double-pulse irradiation, it is possible to control the induced structures and to fabricate novel and more complex 2D-textures. Nevertheless, double-pulse irradiation often implies the use of sophisticated setups for modifying the pulse polarization and temporal profile. Here, we show the generation of homogeneous 2D-LIPSS (laser-induced periodic surface structures) over large areas utilizing a simple array of birefringent crystals. Linearly and circularly polarized pulses were applied, and the optimum process window was defined for both. The results are compared to previous studies, which include a delay line, and the reproducibility between the two techniques is validated. As a result of a systematic study of the process parameters, the obtained morphology was found to depend both on the interplay between fluence and inter-pulse delay, as well as on the number of incident pulses. The obtained structures were characterized via SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and atomic force microscopy. We believe that our results represent a novel approach to surface structuring, primed for introduction in an industrial environment

    Antifungal Activity and DNA Topoisomerase Inhibition of Hydrolysable Tannins from Punica granatum L

    Punica granatum L. (pomegranate) fruit is known to be an important source of bioactive phenolic compounds belonging to hydrolysable tannins. Pomegranate extracts have shown antifungal activity, but the compounds responsible for this activity and their mechanism/s of action have not been completely elucidated up to now. The aim of the present study was the investigation of the inhibition ability of a selection of pomegranate phenolic compounds (i.e., punicalagin, punicalin, ellagic acid, gallic acid) on both plant and human fungal pathogens. In addition, the biological target of punicalagin was identified here for the first time. The antifungal activity of pomegranate phenolics was evaluated by means of Agar Disk Diffusion Assay and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) evaluation. A chemoinformatic analysis predicted for the first time topoisomerases I and II as potential biological targets of punicalagin, and this prediction was confirmed by in vitro inhibition assays. Concerning phytopathogens, all the tested compounds were effective, often similarly to the fungicide imazalil at the label dose. Particularly, punicalagin showed the lowest MIC for Alternaria alternata and Botrytis cinerea, whereas punicalin was the most active compound in terms of growth control extent. As for human pathogens, punicalagin was the most active compound among the tested ones against Candida albicans reference strains, as well as against the clinically isolates. UHPLC coupled with HRMS indicated that C. albicans, similarly to the phytopathogen Coniella granati, is able to hydrolyze both punicalagin and punicalin as a response to the fungal attack. Punicalagin showed a strong inhibitory activity, with IC50 values of 9.0 and 4.6 µM against C. albicans topoisomerases I and II, respectively. Altogether, the results provide evidence that punicalagin is a valuable candidate to be further exploited as an antifungal agent in particular against human fungal infections

    Characterization of alternaria species associated with heart rot of pomegranate fruit

    This study was aimed at identifying Alternaria species associated with heart rot disease of pomegranate fruit in southern Italy and characterizing their mycotoxigenic profile. A total of 42 Alternaria isolates were characterized. They were obtained from pomegranate fruits with symptoms of heart rot sampled in Apulia and Sicily and grouped into six distinct morphotypes based on macro-and microscopic features. According to multigene phylogenetic analysis, including internal transcribed spacer (ITS), translation elongation factor 1-α (EF-1α), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and a SCAR marker (OPA10-2), 38 isolates of morphotypes 1 to 5 were identified as Alternaria alternata, while isolates of morphotype 6, all from Sicily, clustered within the Alternaria arborescens species complex. In particular, isolates of morphotype 1, the most numerous, clustered with the ex-type isolate of A. alternata, proving to belong to A. alternata. No difference in pathogenicity on pomegranate fruits was found between isolates of A. alternata and A. arborescens and among A. alternata isolates of different morphotypes. The toxigenic profile of isolates varied greatly: in vitro, all 42 isolates produced tenuazonic acid and most of them other mycotoxins, including alternariol, alternariol monomethyl ether, altenuene and tentoxin

    Malignant cancer mortality in Province of Taranto (Italy). Geographic analysis in an area of high environmental risk

    Background. A geographic analysis of the causes of death is an important tool for assessing the effectiveness of Public Health initiatives. The aim of this study is to analyse the causes of death between 2000 and 2004, to discover any excess mortality from can- cer in Province of Taranto, an area at high environmental risk. Methods. Mortality data from cancer were selected from the Puglia Regional Nominative Causes of Death Registry. Crude and standardized rates and Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR) were calculated for the five Provinces of the Puglia Region, their capital cities and in four concentric rings around the industrial area located in Province of Taranto. Results. Even if the highest death rate for all tumours resulted in the Province of Lecce (24.9 x 10,000), in the cities of Lecce and Bari (29 x 10,000), the distribution of the SMRs in Province of Taranto showed an excess of mortality (+10%) in the ring next to industrial area. For lung cancer the highest rate was reported in city of Taranto (6 x10,000) and the highest risk (+24%) in the ring next to industrial area. Moreover, in this area 9 (70%) of the 13 considered malignant tumours types presented an excess of mortality. Conclusion. The results uphold the data reported in the pub- lished literature. It is fundamental to intensify research into other risk factors (exposure at work and aberrant lifestyles). Moreover, there is an increasing need for a Regional Cancer Register

    Quantitative analysis of the thermal distortions in a 100 W CW Nd:YAG ceramic slab laser.

    Making use of an interferometric diagnostic system, we analyze the thermo-mechanical distortions taking place in the slab shaped ceramic Nd:YAG active medium of a 100 W class laser. These distortions are collected in different pumping regimes, both in static situations and during transient warm-up, and compared to the results of computer simulations. This procedure enables us to determine the relevance of different stress causes and thus to increase the specific power extraction of the active slab module

    BACKGROUND: In 2015, the second cycle of the CONCORD programme established global surveillance of cancer survival as a metric of the effectiveness of health systems and to inform global policy on cancer control. CONCORD-3 updates the worldwide surveillance of cancer survival to 2014. METHODS: CONCORD-3 includes individual records for 37.5 million patients diagnosed with cancer during the 15-year period 2000-14. Data were provided by 322 population-based cancer registries in 71 countries and territories, 47 of which provided data with 100% population coverage. The study includes 18 cancers or groups of cancers: oesophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, lung, breast (women), cervix, ovary, prostate, and melanoma of the skin in adults, and brain tumours, leukaemias, and lymphomas in both adults and children. Standardised quality control procedures were applied; errors were rectified by the registry concerned. We estimated 5-year net survival. Estimates were age-standardised with the International Cancer Survival Standard weights. FINDINGS: For most cancers, 5-year net survival remains among the highest in the world in the USA and Canada, in Australia and New Zealand, and in Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. For many cancers, Denmark is closing the survival gap with the other Nordic countries. Survival trends are generally increasing, even for some of the more lethal cancers: in some countries, survival has increased by up to 5% for cancers of the liver, pancreas, and lung. For women diagnosed during 2010-14, 5-year survival for breast cancer is now 89.5% in Australia and 90.2% in the USA, but international differences remain very wide, with levels as low as 66.1% in India. For gastrointestinal cancers, the highest levels of 5-year survival are seen in southeast Asia: in South Korea for cancers of the stomach (68.9%), colon (71.8%), and rectum (71.1%); in Japan for oesophageal cancer (36.0%); and in Taiwan for liver cancer (27.9%). By contrast, in the same world region, survival is generally lower than elsewhere for melanoma of the skin (59.9% in South Korea, 52.1% in Taiwan, and 49.6% in China), and for both lymphoid malignancies (52.5%, 50.5%, and 38.3%) and myeloid malignancies (45.9%, 33.4%, and 24.8%). For children diagnosed during 2010-14, 5-year survival for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia ranged from 49.8% in Ecuador to 95.2% in Finland. 5-year survival from brain tumours in children is higher than for adults but the global range is very wide (from 28.9% in Brazil to nearly 80% in Sweden and Denmark). INTERPRETATION: The CONCORD programme enables timely comparisons of the overall effectiveness of health systems in providing care for 18 cancers that collectively represent 75% of all cancers diagnosed worldwide every year. It contributes to the evidence base for global policy on cancer control. Since 2017, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has used findings from the CONCORD programme as the official benchmark of cancer survival, among their indicators of the quality of health care in 48 countries worldwide. Governments must recognise population-based cancer registries as key policy tools that can be used to evaluate both the impact of cancer prevention strategies and the effectiveness of health systems for all patients diagnosed with cancer.
