    Comment: The New York City Housing Part: New Remedy for an Old Dilemma

    This Comment describes the practical operation of the Housing Part of the Civil Court of the City of New York, which began its operation October 1, 1973. The jurisdiction of the court as well as the remedies and penalties provided in the enabling legislation are outlined. The duties of its personnel, settlement procedures, and the influence of administrative agencies upon the operation of the Housing Part are also examined, as are several cases affecting the operation of the Housing Part. The author concludes that there have been many beneficial effects from the first year of operation of the Housing Part, but that there remains room for improvement

    Isotopic Dependence of the Casimir Force

    We calculate the dependence of the Casimir force on the isotopic composition of the interacting objects. This dependence arises from the subtle influence of the nuclear masses on the electronic properties of the bodies.     Persistence of serogroup C antibody responses following quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccination in United States military personnel

    AbstractSerogroup C meningococcal (MenC) disease accounts for one-third of all meningococcal cases and causes meningococcal outbreaks in the U.S. Quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine conjugated to diphtheria toxoid (MenACYWD) was recommended in 2005 for adolescents and high risk groups such as military recruits. We evaluated anti-MenC antibody persistence in U.S. military personnel vaccinated with either MenACYWD or meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV4). Twelve hundred subjects vaccinated with MenACYWD from 2006 to 2008 or MPSV4 from 2002 to 2004 were randomly selected from the Defense Medical Surveillance System. Baseline serologic responses to MenC were assessed in all subjects; 100 subjects per vaccine group were tested during one of the following six post-vaccination time-points: 5–7, 11–13, 17–19, 23–25, 29–31, or 35–37 months. Anti-MenC geometric mean titers (GMT) were measured by rabbit complement serum bactericidal assay (rSBA) and geometric mean concentrations (GMC) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Continuous variables were compared using the Wilcoxon rank sum test and the proportion of subjects with an rSBA titer ≥8 by chi-square. Pre-vaccination rSBA GMT was <8 for the MenACWYD group. rSBA GMT increased to 703 at 5–7 months post-vaccination and decreased by 94% to 43 at 3 years post-vaccination. GMT was significantly lower in the MenACWYD group at 5–7 months post-vaccination compared to the MPSV4 group. The percentage of MenACWYD recipients achieving an rSBA titer of ≥8 decreased from 87% at 5–7 months to 54% at 3 years. There were no significant differences between vaccine groups in the proportion of subjects with a titer of ≥8 at any time-point. GMC for the MenACWYD group was 0.14μg/mL at baseline, 1.07μg/mL at 5–7 months, and 0.66μg/mL at 3 years, and significantly lower than the MPSV4 group at all time-points.     A dimensional summation account of polymorphous category learning

The stimuli are available at the same locations.Polymorphous concepts are hard to learn, and this is perhaps surprising because they, like many natural concepts, have an overall similarity structure. However, the dimensional summation hypothesis (Milton & Wills, 2004) predicts this difficulty. It also makes a number of other predictions about polymorphous concept formation, which are tested here. In Experiment 1 we confirm the theory’s prediction that polymorphous concept formation should be facilitated by deterministic pretraining on the constituent features of the stimulus. This facilitation is relative to an equivalent amount of training on the polymorphous concept itself. In Experiments 2–4, the dimensional summation account of this single feature pretraining effect is contrasted with some other accounts, including a more general strategic account (Experiment 2), seriality of training and stimulus decomposition accounts (Experiment 3), and the role of errors (Experiment 4). The dimensional summation hypothesis provides the best account of these data. In Experiment 5, a further prediction is confirmed — the single feature pretraining effect is eliminated by a concurrent counting task. The current experiments suggest the hypothesis that natural concepts might be acquired by the deliberate serial summation of evidence.     Whole Genome In-Silico Analysis of South African G1P[8] Rotavirus Strains before and after Vaccine Introduction over a Period of 14 Years

    Rotavirus G1P[8] strains account for more than half of the group A rotavirus (RVA) infections in children under five years of age, globally. A total of 103 stool samples previously characterized as G1P[8] and collected seven years before and seven years after introducing the Rotarix® vaccine in South Africa were processed for whole-genome sequencing. All the strains analyzed had a Wa-like constellation (G1-P[8]-I1-R1-C1-M1-A1-N1-T1-E1-H1). South African pre- and post-vaccine G1 strains were clustered in G1 lineage-I and II while the majority (84.2%) of the P[8] strains were grouped in P[8] lineage-III. Several amino acid sites across ten gene segments with the exception of VP7 were under positive selective pressure. Except for the N147D substitution in the antigenic site of eight post-vaccine G1 strains when compared to both Rotarix® and pre-vaccine strains, most of the amino acid substitutions in the antigenic regions of post-vaccine G1P[8] strains were already present during the pre-vaccine period. Therefore, Rotarix® did not appear to have an impact on the amino acid differences in the antigenic regions of South African post-vaccine G1P[8] strains. However, continued whole-genome surveillance of RVA strains to decipher genetic changes in the post-vaccine period remains imperative
