Static Ricci-flat 5-manifolds admitting the 2-sphere
We examine, in a purely geometrical way, static Ricci-flat 5-manifolds
admitting the 2-sphere and an additional hypersurface-orthogonal Killing
vector. These are widely studied in the literature, from different physical
approaches, and known variously as the Kramer - Gross - Perry - Davidson - Owen
solutions. The 2-fold infinity of cases that result are studied by way of new
coordinates (which are in most cases global) and the cases likely to be of
interest in any physical approach are distinguished on the basis of the
nakedness and geometrical mass of their associated singularities. It is argued
that the entire class of solutions has to be considered unstable about the
exceptional solutions: the black string and soliton cases. Any physical theory
which admits the non-exceptional solutions as the external vacuua of a
collapsing object has to accept the possibility of collapse to zero volume
leaving behind the weakest possible, albeit naked, geometrical singularities at
the origin.Finally, it is pointed out that these types of solutions generalize,

Advances in personalized targeted treatment of metastatic melanoma and non-invasive tumor monitoring
Despite extensive scientific progress in the melanoma field, treatment of advanced stage melanoma with chemotherapeutics and biotherapeutics has rarely provided response rates higher than 20%. In the past decade, targeted inhibitors have been developed for metastatic melanoma, leading to the advent of more personalized therapies of genetically characterized tumors. Here we review current melanoma treatments and emerging targeted molecular therapies. In particular we discuss the mutant BRAF inhibitors Vemurafenib and Dabrafenib, which markedly inhibit tumor growth and advance patientsâ overall survival. However this response is almost inevitably followed by complete tumor relapse due to drug resistance hampering the encouraging initial responses. Several mechanisms of resistance within and outside the MAPK pathway have now been uncovered and have paved theway for clinical trials of combination therapies to try and overcome tumor relapse. It is apparent that personalized treatment management will be required in this new era of targeted treatment. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) provide an easily accessible means of monitoring patient relapse and several new approaches are available for the molecular characterization of CTCs. Thus CTCs provide a monitoring tool to evaluate treatment efficacy and early detection of drug resistance in real time.We detail here how advances in the molecular analysis of CTCs may provide insight into new avenues of approaching therapeutic options that would benefit personalized melanoma management

The beta Pictoris association: Catalog of photometric rotational periods of low-mass members and candidate members
We intended to compile the most complete catalog of bona fide members and
candidate members of the beta Pictoris association, and to measure their
rotation periods and basic properties from our own observations, public
archives, and exploring the literature. We carried out a multi-observatories
campaign to get our own photometric time series and collected all archived
public photometric data time series for the stars in our catalog. Each time
series was analyzed with the Lomb-Scargle and CLEAN periodograms to search for
the stellar rotation periods. We complemented the measured rotational
properties with detailed information on multiplicity, membership, and projected
rotational velocity available in the literature and discussed star by star. We
measured the rotation periods of 112 out of 117 among bona fide members and
candidate members of the beta Pictoris association and, whenever possible, we
also measured the luminosity, radius, and inclination of the stellar rotation
axis. This represents to date the largest catalog of rotation periods of any
young loose stellar association. We provided an extensive catalog of rotation
periods together with other relevant basic properties useful to explore a
number of open issues, such as the causes of spread of rotation periods among

Characterizing HR3549B using SPHERE
Aims. In this work, we characterize the low mass companion of the A0 field
star HR3549. Methods. We observed HR3549AB in imaging mode with the the NIR
branch (IFS and IRDIS) of SPHERE@VLT, with IFS in YJ mode and IRDIS in the H
band. We also acquired a medium resolution spectrum with the IRDIS long slit
spectroscopy mode. The data were reduced using the dedicated SPHERE GTO
pipeline, purposely designed for this instrument. We employed algorithms such
as PCA and TLOCI to reduce the speckle noise. Results. The companion was
clearly visible both with IRDIS and IFS.We obtained photometry in four
different bands as well as the astrometric position for the companion. Based on
our astrometry, we confirm that it is a bound object and put constraints on its
orbit. Although several uncertainties are still present, we estimate an age of
~100-150 Myr for this system, yielding a most probable mass for the companion
of 40-50MJup and T_eff ~300-2400 K. Comparing with template spectra points to a
spectral type between M9 and L0 for the companion, commensurate with its

Leeway for the loyal: a model of employee discretion
This article examines the factors underlying task discretion from an economist's perspective. It argues that the key axis for understanding discretion is the trade-off between the positive effects of discretion on potential output per employee and the negative effects of greater leeway on work effort. In empirical analysis using matched employer-employee data, it is shown that discretion is strongly affected by the level of employee commitment. In addition, discretion is generally greater in high-skilled jobs, although not without exceptions, and lower where employees are under-skilled. Homeworking and flexitime policies raise employee discretion. The impact of teamworking is mixed. In about half of cases team members do not jointly decide about work matters, and the net effect of teams on task discretion in these cases is negative. In other cases, where team members do decide matters jointly, the impact is found to be neutral according to employees' perceptions, or positive according to managers' perceptions. There are also significant and substantial unobserved establishment-level factors which affect task discretion
Correlation between circulating tumour DNA and metabolic tumour burden in metastatic melanoma patients
Background: Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) may serve as a measure of tumour burden and a useful tool for non-invasive monitoring of cancer. However, ctDNA is not always detectable in patients at time of diagnosis of metastatic disease. Therefore, there is a need to understand the correlation between ctDNA levels and the patients\u27 overall metabolic tumour burden (MTB). Methods: Thirty-two treatment naĂŻve metastatic melanoma patients were included in the study. MTB and metabolic tumour volume (MTV) was measured by 18F-fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT). Relativistic MHD and black hole excision: Formulation and initial tests
A new algorithm for solving the general relativistic MHD equations is
described in this paper. We design our scheme to incorporate black hole
excision with smooth boundaries, and to simplify solving the combined Einstein
and MHD equations with AMR. The fluid equations are solved using a finite
difference Convex ENO method. Excision is implemented using overlapping grids.
Elliptic and hyperbolic divergence cleaning techniques allow for maximum
flexibility in choosing coordinate systems, and we compare both methods for a
standard problem. Numerical results of standard test problems are presented in
two-dimensional flat space using excision, overlapping grids, and elliptic and

From Predicting Solar Activity to Forecasting Space Weather: Practical Examples of Research-to-Operations and Operations-to-Research
The successful transition of research to operations (R2O) and operations to
research (O2R) requires, above all, interaction between the two communities. We
explore the role that close interaction and ongoing communication played in the
successful fielding of three separate developments: an observation platform, a
numerical model, and a visualization and specification tool. Additionally, we
will examine how these three pieces came together to revolutionize
interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) arrival forecasts. A discussion of
the importance of education and training in ensuring a positive outcome from
R2O activity follows. We describe efforts by the meteorological community to
make research results more accessible to forecasters and the applicability of
these efforts to the transfer of space-weather research.We end with a
forecaster "wish list" for R2O transitions. Ongoing, two-way communication
between the research and operations communities is the thread connecting it
