    Monitoring sediment transfer processes on the desert margin

    LANDSAT Thematic Mapper and Multispectral Scanner data have been used to construct change detection images for three playas in south-central Tunisia. Change detection images have been used to analyze changes in surface reflectance and absorption between wet and dry season (intra-annual change) and between different years (inter-annual change). Change detection imagery has been used to examine geomorphological changes on the playas. Changes in geomorphological phenomena are interpreted from changes in soil and foliar moisture levels, differences in reflectances between different salt and sediments and the spatial expression of geomorphological features. Intra-annual change phenomena that can be detected from multidate imagery are changes in surface moisture, texture and chemical composition, vegetation cover and the extent of aeolian activity. Inter-annual change phenomena are divisible into those restricted to marginal playa facies (sedimentation from sheetwash and alluvial fans, erosion from surface runoff and cliff retreat) and these are found in central playa facies which are related to the internal redistribution of water, salt and sediment

    We describe a symmetron model in which the screening of fifth forces arises at the one-loop level through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking. We show that such a theory can avoid current constraints on the existence of fifth forces but still has the potential to give rise to observable deviations from general relativity, which could be seen in cold atom experiments

    A microfluidics tool for high-throughput, real-time multimodal imaging of nanoparticle-cell interactions

    The increasing use of nanomaterials for biomedical applications has raised the need for efficient, robust and low-cost high-throughput assessment of nanotoxicity and cell-nanoparticle interactions. Microfluidics provides the tools for high-throughput single-cell functional monitoring, while gold nanorods have unique potential for intracellular tracking and can simultaneously be used as drug carriers. Presented here is a miniaturised platform that integrates these features with a multimodal approach to cell imaging. A microfluidic device allows for trapping of an array of singlecells, followed by the controlled delivery of nanoparticles into the cell array and subsequent real-time multimodal imaging of cellular interactions with functionalised nanoparticles. This system has been successfully used to assess cellnanoparticle interactions at the single-cell level

    Time-lapse measurement of single-cell response to nanomaterial : a microfluidic approach

    This work presents the successful application of a single-cell microfluidic platform for high-throughput, real-time screening of nanoparticle-cell interactions. Taking vaccine delivery as a proof-of-concept application, ovalbumin-conjugated gold nanorods were produced and controllably delivered to primary dendritic cells within the device. Time-lapse imaging enabled monitoring of hundreds of single-cells during exposure to a range of concentrations of nanoparticle conjugates and simultaneous quantification of specific cellular functions. This integrated system provides throughput and statistical data comparable to that obtained with flow cytometry but also offers a novel approach to determine the dynamics of nanoparticle-cell interactions and nanoparticle-mediated antigen delivery with single-cell resolution

On behalf of the Oombulgurri Community, we invite assistance in developing the grain and pasture cropping at Oombulgurri. We have experimented with peanuts, sorghum, and many varieties of vegetables. This has tested the reality of hopes to expand acreage and varieties to become self-sufficient in stock feed. The Farm and Garden Guild now needs the expertise of your services to plan a four-year programme. vie need assistance in choosing from the many options, opinions and advices available from Australia and elsewhere, for grain production, pastures, methods appropriate to our geography, and machinery, to minimise expenditure and produce food for the stock expansion necessary to be self-sufficient in locally produced food for the town. Our concerns so far have been to start poultry, pigs, goats and horses stocking to provide useful work for everyone and food „ ually increase production and decrease imports with the appropriate use of manpower, water and other resources. We believe we can produce stock feed locally and grad- We attach our initial estimates of need which includes an estimate of projected stocking and machinery needs as well as a list of what is on hand

    Experimental Evaluation of Dual-Modality Electrical Tomographic Systems on Gas-Oil-Water Flow in Horizontal Pipeline

    A variety of dual-modality tomographic systems have been proposed for the characterisation of multiphase flow, but the evaluation of such systems are generally carried out under simplified flow conditions, such as stratified flow and slug flow. This paper reports the evaluation results of a dualmodality electrical tomographic system in an industry-scale gas-oil-water three-phase flow. Experimental conditions include water-to-liquid ratio (WLR) from 0% to 100% in parallel with gas volume fractions from 0% to 100%, which produces a variety of flow patterns, such as stratified-wavy flow, slug flow, plug flow, bubbly flow, and annular flow. Commercialised ITS M3C (ECT) and V5R (ERT) dual-modality systems were applied to perform the measurement. A threshold-based multidimensional data fused approach was implemented for the data fusion process. The results demonstrated that the ERT system is able to measure water continuous flow with WLR higher than 40%, which is in good agreement with previous reports. The ECT system is able to measure from 0% to 100% WLR, far beyond its conventional capabilities. Even though the tomograms are distorted when WLR is higher than 90%, this result is much better than the reported 40% limit. Visualisation and mean concentration derived from the tomograms by advanced data fusion verify the capability of the system in the application of gas-oil-water flow characterisation
