    Basic studies of baroclinic flows

    Computations were completed of transition curves in the conventional annulus, including hysteresis effect. The model GEOSIM was used to compute the transition between axisymmetric flow and baroclinic wave flow in the conventional annulus experiments. Thorough testing and documentation of the GEOSIM code were also completed. The Spacelab 3 results from the Geophysical Fluid Flow Cell (GFFC) were reviewed and numerical modeling was performed of many of the cases with horizontal temperature gradients as well as heating from below, with different rates of rotation. A numerical study of the lower transition to axisymmetric flow in the baroclinic annulus was performed using GEOSIM

    An understanding is being developed for processes which may be important in the atmosphere, and the definition and analysis of baroclinic experiments utilizing the geophysical fluid flow cells (GFFC) apparatus in microgravity space flights. Included are studies using numerical codes, theoretical models, and terrestrial laboratory experiments. The numerical modeling is performed in three stages: calculation of steady axisymmetric flow, calculation of fastest-growing linear eigenmodes, and nonlinear effects (first, wave-mean flow interactions, then wave-wave interactions). The code can accommodate cylindrical, spherical, or channel geometry. It uses finite differences in the vertical and meridional directions, and is spectral in the azimuthal. The theoretical work was mostly in the area of effects of topography upon the baroclinic instability problem. The laboratory experiments are performed in a cylindrical annulus which has a temperture gradient imposed upon the lower surface and an approximately isothermal outer wall, with the upper and inner surfaces being nominally thermally insulating

    ConferenceXP-Powered I-MINDS: A Multiagent System for Intelligently Supporting Online Collaboration

    In this paper, we describe a multiagent system designed for intelligently supporting online human collaboration, built on top of the ConferenceXP platform developed by Microsoft Research. Many current collaborative systems are passive in nature and do not provide active, intelligent support to users. A multiagent system can be used to track user behavior, perform automated tasks for humans, find optimal collaborative groups, and create and present helpful processed information based on data mining without detracting from the rest of the collaborative experience. Our ConferenceXP-powered I-MINDS application currently offers five different components for enhancing collaboration and sup-porting moderator decision making by giving each user a personal agent that works with other agents to further sup-port the entire system. These capabilities include two modes for group-based discussions, one for question/answer pairs between users and moderators, a search engine for retrieving tracked data, and a centralized classroom/team management system for quickly accessing user performance. CXP+I-MINDS has been successfully deployed to support an interactive business course where its intelligent activities assisted the professor in teaching, and we are working on delivering it to support a wireless classroom

    Integrating Interprofessional Education Through Service-Learning: Continued multidisciplinary collaboration for student-led volunteer healthcare event

    SCOPE (Student Community Outreach for Public Education) at University of the Pacific (UOP), Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry sponsored the 25th Annual Senior Smiles Health & Wellness Fair in its clinic, located in San Francisco on April 21th, 2018. More than 105 San Francisco’s senior citizens with limited access to health care attended this event. As a continuation of last year’s Senior Smiles & Wellness which pioneered the launch of Interprofessional education (IPE) activities, SCOPE provided various health screenings to the senior attendees in partnership with Dugoni’s sister schools UOP Audiology and Physical Therapy program as well as Touro College of Pharmacy. This event was designed to be a continued effort of interdisciplinary community-outreach based learning that models UOP\u27s Dental School Helix Curriculum. This event presented a great opportunity for various health education programs to learn from each other, promoting future collaborations among healthcare providers and benefiting a larger audience

    Disentangling jet and disc emission from the 2005 outburst of XTE J1118+480

    The black hole X-ray transient, XTE J1118+480, has now twice been observed in outburst - 2000 and 2005 - and on both occasions remained in the low/hard X-ray spectral state. Here we present radio, infrared, optical, soft X-ray and hard X-ray observations of the more recent outburst. We find that the lightcurves have very different morphologies compared with the 2000 event and the optical decay is delayed relative to the X-ray/radio. We attribute this lesser degree of correlation to contributions of emission from multiple components, in particular the jet and accretion disc. Whereas the jet seemed to dominate the broadband spectrum in 2000, in 2005 the accretion disc seems to be more prominent and we use an analysis of the lightcurves and spectra to distinguish between the jet and disc emission. There also appears to be an optically thin component to the radio emission in the 2005 data, possibly associated with multiple ejection events and decaying as the outburst proceeds. These results add to the discussion that the term "low/hard state'" covers a wider range of properties than previously thought, if it is to account for XTE J1118+480 during these two outbursts.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
