Nutrients, Eutrophic Response, and Fish Anomalies in the Little Miami River, Ohio

Total phosphorus (TP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrogen, dissolved oxygen (DO), benthic and sestonic algal biomass, benthic phosphorus storage, aqueous trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Se, Zn), heavy metals (Al, Fe, Mn) and major cations (Ca, K, Mg, Na, Si) were analyzed at
twelve sites over two summers. Results showed excess TP (>70 ug/L, p <0.05) and SRP (≥62.5 ug/L, p <0.05), borderline nuisance benthic algal biomass (mg/L chlorophyll a/m2) (periphyton: mean = 73.8 +/- 74.2,
n = 125; Cladophora: mean = 216.7 +/- 380.7, n = 54), excess benthic phosphorus storage (mg P/m2) (periphyton: mean = 45.5 +/- 23.2, n = 64; Cladophora: mean = 129.3 +/- 224, n = 52), and high daytime DO (mean = 9.1 +/- 1.5 mg/L, n = 132). Previous studies showed aqueous phosphorus concentration and diurnal DO swings were positively correlated with fish anomalies (OEPA 1995, 2000). In this study, however, periphyton phosphorus (P) was the only eutrophic response variable to correlate with the distribution of fish anomalies reported by OEPA in 1995 and 2000, and the association was negative (R2 =
0.143, p = 0.002, m = -1.634, df = 1, 62). We concluded that aqueous nutrients, eutrophic response variables, and/or water chemistry alone did not explain the occurrence of fish anomalies in the LMR
Shotgun ion mobility mass spectrometry sequencing of heparan sulfate saccharides
Despite evident regulatory roles of heparan sulfate (HS) saccharides in numerous biological processes, definitive information on the bioactive sequences of these polymers is lacking, with only a handful of natural structures sequenced to date. Here, we develop a “Shotgun” Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry Sequencing (SIMMS2) method in which intact HS saccharides are dissociated in an ion mobility mass spectrometer and collision cross section values of fragments measured. Matching of data for intact and fragment ions against known values for 36 fully defined HS saccharide structures (from di- to decasaccharides) permits unambiguous sequence determination of validated standards and unknown natural saccharides, notably including variants with 3O-sulfate groups. SIMMS2 analysis of two fibroblast growth factor-inhibiting hexasaccharides identified from a HS oligosaccharide library screen demonstrates that the approach allows elucidation of structure-activity relationships. SIMMS2 thus overcomes the bottleneck for decoding the informational content of functional HS motifs which is crucial for their future biomedical exploitation
Overwintering fires in boreal forests
Forest fires are usually viewed within the context of a single fire season, in which weather conditions and fuel supply can combine to create conditions favourable for fire ignition—usually by lightning or human activity—and spread1–3. But some fires exhibit ‘overwintering’ behaviour, in which they smoulder through the non-fire season and flare up in the subsequent spring4,5. In boreal (northern) forests, deep organic soils favourable for smouldering6, along with accelerated climate warming7, may present unusually favourable conditions for overwintering. However, the extent of overwintering in boreal forests and the underlying factors influencing this behaviour remain unclear. Here we show that overwintering fires in boreal forests are associated with hot summers generating large fire years and deep burning into organic soils, conditions that have become more frequent in our study areas in recent decades. Our results are based on an algorithm with which we detect overwintering fires in Alaska, USA, and the Northwest Territories, Canada, using field and remote sensing datasets. Between 2002 and 2018, overwintering fires were responsible for 0.8 per cent of the total burned area; however, in one year this amounted to 38 per cent. The spatiotemporal predictability of overwintering fires could be used by fire management agencies to facilitate early detection, which may result in reduced carbon emissions and firefighting costs
Thymoglobulin Induction Dosing Strategies in a Low-Risk Kidney Transplant Population: Three or Four Days?
The optimal dose and duration of rabbit antithymocyte globulin (rATG) induction has not been defined. Methods. We compared the safety and efficacy of 2 dosing strategies, rATG 1.5 mg/kg for 4 days (n = 59) versus 2 mg/kg for 3 days (n = 59), in a retrospective, cohort study. Results. Two-year rejection-free survival was 95% in each group (P = .983). Renal function and infection rates were similar. The incidence of leucopenia was similar, although the 2 mg/kg group was more likely to be thrombocytopenic on day 2 (4% versus 28%, P = .04). Length of stay tended to be longer for the 1.5 mg/kg group (6.0 ± 3.7 versus 5.1 ± 1.9 days P = .104). A cost savings of $920 per patient for rATG were seen in the 2 mg/kg group (P = .122). Conclusions. Shorter, more intense dosing of rATG is safe and effective. The 3-day dose strategy resulted in a clinically shorter length of stay and may result in cost savings
Polyhedral colloidal `rocks': low-dimensional networks
We introduce a model system of anisotropic colloidal `rocks'. Due to their
shape, the bonding introduced via non-absorbing polymers is profoundly
different from spherical particles: bonds between rocks are rigid against
rotation, leading to strong frustration. We develop a geometric model which
captures the essence of the rocks. Experiments and simulations show that the
colloid geometry leads to structures of low fractal dimension. This is in stark
contrast to gels of spheres, whose rigidity results from locally dense regions.
At high density the rocks form a quasi one-component glass
Healing relationships and the existential philosophy of Martin Buber
The dominant unspoken philosophical basis of medical care in the United States is a form of Cartesian reductionism that views the body as a machine and medical professionals as technicians whose job is to repair that machine. The purpose of this paper is to advocate for an alternative philosophy of medicine based on the concept of healing relationships between clinicians and patients. This is accomplished first by exploring the ethical and philosophical work of Pellegrino and Thomasma and then by connecting Martin Buber's philosophical work on the nature of relationships to an empirically derived model of the medical healing relationship. The Healing Relationship Model was developed by the authors through qualitative analysis of interviews of physicians and patients. Clinician-patient healing relationships are a special form of what Buber calls I-Thou relationships, characterized by dialog and mutuality, but a mutuality limited by the inherent asymmetry of the clinician-patient relationship. The Healing Relationship Model identifies three processes necessary for such relationships to develop and be sustained: Valuing, Appreciating Power and Abiding. We explore in detail how these processes, as well as other components of the model resonate with Buber's concepts of I-Thou and I-It relationships. The resulting combined conceptual model illuminates the wholeness underlying the dual roles of clinicians as healers and providers of technical biomedicine. On the basis of our analysis, we argue that health care should be focused on healing, with I-Thou relationships at its core
Misalignment of the microquasar V4641 Sgr (SAX J1819.3--2525)
In the microquasar V4641 Sgr the spin of the black hole is thought to be
misaligned with the binary orbital axis. The accretion disc aligns with the
black hole spin by the Lense-Thirring effect near to the black hole and further
out becomes aligned with the binary orbital axis. The inclination of the radio
jets and the Fe line profile have both been used to determine the
inclination of the inner accretion disc but the measurements are inconsistent.
Using a steady state analytical warped disc model for V4641 Sgr we find that
the inner disc region is flat and aligned with the black hole up to about . Thus if both the radio jet and fluorescent emission originates in
the same inner region then the measurements of the inner disc inclination

Psychosocial concerns and needs of cancer survivors treated at a comprehensive cancer center and a community safety net hospital
The number of cancer survivors in the United States is expected to grow to 18 million by 2020 because of improved cancer treatment outcomes and the aging of the population.[1] Many cancer survivors are at increased risk for cancer recurrence and other adverse long-term physical and psychosocial conditions.[2-5] Disparities in survival are associated with inadequate or no health insurance coverage because individuals are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at later stages,[6] and higher incidence for some cancers among African Americans.[7] Few studies have examined psychosocial health disparities during cancer survivorship,[8-13] and little is known about how psychosocial factors subsequent to diagnosis affect survival and long-term outcomes. [4,14] While clinical care relevant to survivorship outcomes is advancing, [15, 16] optimal practices for preparing survivors for treatment and transitioning off treatment have yet to be defined. [11, 15, 17] Furthermore, guidance is needed for serving minority and underserved survivor populations where health disparities exist.[7] More data are needed about incidence of adverse outcomes and their determinants, overall and in disparity populations to inform development of best practices for preventive interventions. The purpose of this study was to identify similarities and differences among two groups of survivors in (1) sources of information at time of cancer diagnosis, (2) sources of support used during and after treatment, (3) stressors and challenges during and after treatment, and (4) coping strategies[18] used during and following cancer treatment. These factors might be associated with health services use,[19] and with survivorship disparities.[20] One group was treated at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC), an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, and the other at Meharry Medical College (MMC), its partner medical setting that serves patients who are mostly publicly-insured and uninsured. Secondary analysis of data from focus group participants was undertaken to address the four study topics and to guide future development of interventions tailored to preferences and needs of diverse survivors
Axial hypersensitivity is associated with aberrant nerve sprouting in a novel model of disc degeneration in female Sprague Dawley rats
Chronic low back pain is a global socioeconomic crisis and treatments are lacking in part due to inadequate models. Etiological research suggests that the predominant pathology associated with chronic low back pain is intervertebral disc degeneration. Various research teams have created rat models of disc degeneration, but the clinical translatability of these models has been limited by an absence of robust chronic painlike behavior. To address this deficit, disc degeneration was induced via an artificial annular tear in female Sprague Dawley rats. The subsequent degeneration, which was allowed to progress for 18-weeks, caused a drastic reduction in disc volume. Furthermore, from week 10 till study conclusion, injured animals exhibited significant axial hypersensitivity. At study end, intervertebral discs were assessed for important characteristics of human degenerated discs: extracellular matrix breakdown, hypocellularity, inflammation, and nerve sprouting. All these aspects were significantly increased in injured animals compared to sham controls. Also of note, 20 significant correlations were detected between selected outcomes including a moderate and highly significant correlation (R = 0.59, p \u3c 0.0004) between axial hypersensitivity and disc nerve sprouting. These data support this model as a rigorous platform to explore the pathobiology of disc-associated low back pain and to screen treatments
