    Which one is better: presentation-based or content-based math search?

    Mathematical content is a valuable information source and retrieving this content has become an important issue. This paper compares two searching strategies for math expressions: presentation-based and content-based approaches. Presentation-based search uses state-of-the-art math search system while content-based search uses semantic enrichment of math expressions to convert math expressions into their content forms and searching is done using these content-based expressions. By considering the meaning of math expressions, the quality of search system is improved over presentation-based systems

    Progressive internal gravity waves with bounded upper surface climbing a triangular obstacle

    In this paper we discuss a theoretical model for the interfacial profiles of progressive non-linear waves which result from introducing a triangular obstacle, of finite height, attached to the bottom below the flow of a stratified, ideal, two layer fluid, bounded from above by a rigid boundary. The derived equations are solved by using a nonlinear perturbation method. The dependence of the interfacial profile on the triangular obstacle size, as well as its dependence on some flow parameters, such as the ratios of depths and densities of the two fluids, have been studied

    Very large dielectric response of thin ferroelectric films with the dead layers

    We study the dielectric response of ferroelectric (FE) thin films with "dead" dielectric layer at the interface with electrodes. The domain structure inevitably forms in the FE film in presence of the dead layer. As a result, the effective dielectric constant of the capacitor ϵeff\epsilon_{eff} increases abruptly when the dead layer is thin and, consequently, the pattern of 180-degree domains becomes "soft". We compare the exact results for this problem with the description in terms of a popular "capacitor" model, which is shown to give qualitatively incorrect results. We relate the present results to fatigue observed in thin ferroelectric films.Comment: 5 pages, REVTeX 3.1 with one eps-figure.     Arachidonic acid, arachidonic/eicosapentaenoic acid ratio, stearidonic acid and eicosanoids are involved in dietary-induced albinism in Senegal sole (Solea senegalensis)

    Senegal sole larvae were fed live prey enriched with different amounts of arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) to re-evaluate the effect of these two fatty acids on flatfish pigmentation. Echium oil, a plant derived oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, 18:3n-6) and stearidonic acid (SDA, 18:4n-3) was also used as a component of one of the enrichment emulsions. Although ARA content did not have any effect on growth there was a clear influence on pigmentation that correlated clearly with prostaglandin production. Inclusion of Echium oil, on the contrary, exerted a positive effect on pigmentation rate even though dietary ARA levels were as high as in the other emulsions. The relationships between dietary ARA levels and dietary ARA/EPA ratio, prostaglandin production and pigmentation are discussed

    We perform a molecular dynamical study of the isolated d=1d=1 classical Hamiltonian H=1/2i=1NLi2+ij1cos(θiθj)rijα;(α0){\cal H} = {1/2} \sum_{i=1}^N L_i^2 + \sum_{i \ne j} \frac{1-cos(\theta_i-\theta_j)}{r_{ij}^\alpha} ;(\alpha \ge 0), known to exhibit a second order phase transition, being disordered for uU/NN~uc(α,d)u \equiv U/N{\tilde N} \ge u_c(\alpha,d) and ordered otherwise (UU\equiv total energy and N~N1α/dα/d1α/d{\tilde N} \equiv \frac{N^{1-\alpha/d}-\alpha/d}{1-\alpha/d}). We focus on the nonextensive case α/d1\alpha/d \le 1 and observe that, for u<ucu<u_c, a basin of attraction exists for the initial conditions for which the system quickly relaxes onto a longstanding metastable state (whose duration presumably diverges with NN like N~{\tilde N}) which eventually crosses over to the microcanonical Boltzmann-Gibbs stable state. The temperature associated with the (scaled) average kinetic energy per particle is lower in the metastable state than in the stable one. It is exhibited for the first time that the appropriately scaled maximal Lyapunov exponent λu<ucmax(metastable)Nκmetastable;(N)\lambda_{u<u_c}^{max}(metastable) \propto N^{-\kappa_{metastable}} ;(N \to \infty), where, for all values of α/d\alpha/d, κmetastable\kappa_{metastable} numerically coincides with {\it one third} of its value for u>ucu>u_c, hence decreases from 1/9 to zero when α/d\alpha/d increases from zero to unity, remaining zero thereafter. This new and simple {\it connection between anomalies above and below the critical point} reinforces the nonextensive universality scenario.Comment: 9 pages and 4 PS figure

    Public rules about using and owning real estate in Cuba

    The discussion on urban land continues to be absent in most of the specialized Cuban literature about planning and economic policies, despite its relevance. In very thorough essays about the present challenges and future development of the Cuban economy, nothing is said about the need for adequate public land policies and the implementation of public value capture mechanisms as part of the economic development of the country. The issue is complex, there is a void of almost half a century of not dealing with land value, but these reasons are not sufficient to justify the continued lack of vision in this direction, all the more when the Cuban cities are in desperate need to reverse the deterioration and stagnation that affects them. The Cuban state determines the general rules under which citizens and organisations may own and use real estate. These are rules about property rights and about the limitations - in compliance with aspects such as state security, environmental and heritage protection, economic development, social equity and human and civil rights – on exercising those rights. In doing this, the Cuban state is no different from other states: most states make such rules and enforce them when necessary. What is particular to Cuba is the content of those rules. In particular, the Cuban state has the monopoly to perform land development and management. There are public institutions to plan and deal with all of these aspects, and there are no recognised real estate markets in the country. Another important aspect is the utmost importance given to planning. But in spite of this, Cuban urban planners have rarely been certain of what will be built and where. The main reason for this may be that, despite the numerous master plans to study and anticipate development trends, most of the decisions ultimately involve top officials who envision the projects and establish the investment priorities according to the public interests or needs and the historical moment, irrespective of the plans. This article intends to give a clear picture of how things are done in the public sector, how the administration works, and under which legal framework. I will look at the physical planning system and its importance in the location and implementation of land use, investment projects and housing programs, and at the legal procedures that include licenses for construction, demolition, habitat and other licenses for heritage conservation and redevelopment. I will analyze the difficulties faced by the Cuban planning and legal system with respect to land and urban development, in the attempt to understand the limits imposed by the government on land and urban development, and I will explore to what extent those limits are to blame for the increasing irregularities and violations at all levels of the formal procedures for land and property. I will also introduce the public and personal rights concerning housing, buying and selling, permutes, donations and other tenure alternatives; and clarify the civil responsibilities, namely types of ownership, properties, property registers and so forth in order to expose the opportunities and accessibility of the system but also its limitations

    Within a Green's function formalism we calculate the electronic structure around static extended magnetic and non-magnetic perturbations in a d-wave superconductor. In partucular, we discuss recent elastic neutron scattering and scanning tunneling experiments on High-T_c cuprates exposed to an applied magnetic field. A physical picture consisting of antiferromagnetic vortex cores operating as pinning centers for surrounding stripes is qualitatively consistent with the neutron data provided the stripes have the usual antiphase modulation. The low energy electronic structure in such a region reveals a checkerboard interference pattern consistent with recent scanning tunneling experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
