    Lyapunov Mode Dynamics in Hard-Disk Systems

    The tangent dynamics of the Lyapunov modes and their dynamics as generated numerically - {\it the numerical dynamics} - is considered. We present a new phenomenological description of the numerical dynamical structure that accurately reproduces the experimental data for the quasi-one-dimensional hard-disk system, and shows that the Lyapunov mode numerical dynamics is linear and separate from the rest of the tangent space. Moreover, we propose a new, detailed structure for the Lyapunov mode tangent dynamics, which implies that the Lyapunov modes have well-defined (in)stability in either direction of time. We test this tangent dynamics and its derivative properties numerically with partial success. The phenomenological description involves a time-modal linear combination of all other Lyapunov modes on the same polarization branch and our proposed Lyapunov mode tangent dynamics is based upon the form of the tangent dynamics for the zero modes

    On the coherence/incoherence of electron transport in semiconductor heterostructure optoelectronic devices

    This paper compares and contrasts different theoretical approaches based on incoherent electron scattering transport with experimental measurements of optoelectronic devices formed from semiconductor heterostructures. The Monte Carlo method which makes no a priori assumptions about the carrier distribution in momentum or phase space is compared with less computationally demanding energy-balance rate equation models which assume thermalised carrier distributions. It is shown that the two approaches produce qualitatively similar results for hole transport in p-type Si1-xGex/Si superlattices designed for terahertz emission. The good agreement of the predictions of rate equation calculations with experimental measurements of mid- and far-infrared quantum cascade lasers, quantum well infrared photodetectors and quantum dot infrared photodetectors substantiate the assumption of incoherent scattering dominating the transport in these quantum well based devices. However, the paper goes on to consider the possibility of coherent transport through the density matrix method and suggests an experiment that could allow coherent and incoherent transport to be distinguished from each other

    Resonance and Tones in Dual-Stream Nozzle Flows

    A dual-stream nozzle configuration was studied numerically with the objective of predicting the appearance of tones and study their sources. It was found that some of the tones traced to a coupling between Strouhal shedding from the struts, which held different pieces of the nozzle together, and various duct acoustic modes. A focus of the work was on exploring the nature of the duct modes. First, elements of the numerical procedure were studied for a 4-strut nozzle, validating the results with existing experimental data. The approach was then applied to a 3-strut geometry and four different excitation methods. The predicted tones and associated duct modes are analyzed in detail

The books raise fresh ideas of inequality in the context of globalization by raising questions on the relationship between globalization and inequality throughout history. Although Therborn raises some fundamental questions about inequality, problematizes the concept, and broadens the discussion by adding multiple dimensions to it, Bourguignon’s study deepens our understanding of the problem of inequality by presenting the paradox of its linkage with globalization, which in the last century reduced international inequality while it widened intranational inequality, and the two processes are interrelated. Bourguignon suggests that the growing intranational inequality that threatens economic, political, and social stability can be overcome by concerted efforts of the states. Therborn pins his hope in the rising middle class across the world and their solidarity, which could create a more egalitarian society

    Financial predictions using intelligent systems : the application of advanced technologies for trading financial markets

    This thesis presents a collection of practical techniques for analysing various market properties in order to design advanced self-evolving trading systems based on neural networks combined with a genetic algorithm optimisation approach. Nonlinear multivariate statistical models have gained increasing importance in financial time series analysis, as it is very hard to fmd statistically significant market inefficiencies using standard linear modes. Nonlinear models capture more of the underlying dynamics of these high dimensional noisy systems than traditional models, whilst at the same time making fewer restrictive assumptions about them. These adaptive trading systems can extract information about associated time varying processes that may not be readily captured by traditional models. In order to characterise the fmancial time series in terms of its dynamic nature, this research employs various methods such as fractal analysis, chaos theory and dynamical recurrence analysis. These techniques are used for evaluating whether markets are stochastic and deterministic or nonlinear and chaotic, and to discover regularities that are completely hidden in these time series and not detectable using conventional analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on examining the feasibility of prediction in fmancial time series and the analysis of extreme market events. The market's fractal structure and log-periodic oscillations, typical of periods before extreme events occur, are revealed through recurrence plots. Recurrence qualification analysis indicated a strong presence of structure, recurrence and determinism in the fmancial time series studied. Crucial fmancial time series transition periods were also detected. This research performs several tests on a large number of US and European stocks using methodologies inspired by both fundamental analysis and technical trading rules. Results from the tests show that profitable trading models utilising advanced nonlinear trading systems can be created after accounting for realistic transaction costs. The return achieved by applying the trading model to a portfolio of real price series differs significantly from that achieved by applying it to a randomly generated price series. In some cases, these models are compared against simpler alternative approaches to ensure that there is an added value in the use of these more complex models. The superior performance of multivariate nonlinear models is also demonstrated. The long-short trading strategies performed well in both bull and bear markets, as well as in a sideways market, showing a great degree of flexibility and adjustability to changing market conditions. Empirical evidence shows that information is not instantly incorporated into market pnces and supports the claim that the fmancial time series studied, for the periods analysed, are not entirely random.     Genetic fine-mapping of DIPLOSPOROUS in Taraxacum (dandelion; Asteraceae) indicates a duplicated DIP-gene

    Background DIPLOSPOROUS (DIP) is the locus for diplospory in Taraxacum, associated to unreduced female gamete formation in apomicts. Apomicts reproduce clonally through seeds, including apomeiosis, parthenogenesis, and autonomous or pseudogamous endosperm formation. In Taraxacum, diplospory results in first division restitution (FDR) nuclei, and inherits as a dominant, monogenic trait, independent from the other apomixis elements. A preliminary genetic linkage map indicated that the DIP-locus lacks suppression of recombination, which is unique among all other map-based cloning efforts of apomeiosis to date. FDR as well as apomixis as a whole are of interest in plant breeding, allowing for polyploidization and fixation of hybrid vigor, respectively. No dominant FDR or apomixis genes have yet been isolated. Here, we zoom-in to the DIP-locus by largely extending our initial mapping population, and by analyzing (local) suppression of recombination and allele sequence divergence (ASD). Results We identified 24 recombinants between two most closely linked molecular markers to DIP in an F1-population of 2227 plants that segregates for diplospory and lacks parthenogenesis. Both markers segregated c. 1:1 in the entire population, indicating a 1:1 segregation rate of diplospory. Fine-mapping showed three amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) closest to DIP at 0.2 cM at one flank and a single AFLP at 0.4 cM at the other flank. Our data lacked strong evidence for ASD at marker regions close to DIP. An unexpected bias towards diplosporous plants among the recombinants (20 out of 24) was found. One third of these diplosporous recombinants showed incomplete penetrance of 50-85% diplospory. Conclusions Our data give interesting new insights into the structure of the diplospory locus in Taraxacum. We postulate a locus with a minimum of two DIP-genes and possibly including one or two enhancers or cis-regulatory elements on the basis of the bias towards diplosporous recombinants and incomplete penetrance of diplospory in some of them. We define the DIP-locus to 0.6 cM, which is estimated to cover ~200-300 Kb, with the closest marker at 0.2 cM. Our results confirm the minor role of suppression of recombination and ASD around DIP, making it an excellent candidate to isolate via a chromosome-walking approach.

    Physical activity surveillance across the life-course: from data to policy

    As a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), physical inactivity is a prominent challenge for public health. The purpose of this symposium is to present an overview of physical inactivity prevalence in Europe using data collected through international surveillance initiatives, while highlighting successes and discussing future challenges for utilising data to promote physical activity across the life course. The World Health Organization (WHO) is involved in several physical activity surveillance systems on which discussions during this symposium will be based: 1. The WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) is the largest survey of its kind in the world. An overview of results from the most recent round of COSI will be presented focusing on prevalence estimates for physical activity, screen time and sleep. Variations between countries of the socioeconomic determinants of physical inactivity, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, will demonstrate the ongoing need for quality data to guide targeted policy actions in support of vulnerable groups throughout the life course. 2. The WHO’s STEPwise approach to surveillance (STEPS) survey provides important national level prevalence data on the behavioural and metabolic risk factors for NCDs. For many countries, the STEPS survey has provided the first estimates of physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour in the population and has been essential in raising awareness of the need for national policy actions to increase population levels of physical activity. 3. The European Commission, with the support of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, has established the European Union Physical Activity Focal Points Network to monitor implementation of the 23 indicators of the Health-Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) monitoring framework on physical activity policy development and implementation. 4. Within the European Union Physical Activity Focal Points Network, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, some countries established a survey on physical activity and screen time in children and adolescents
