The incidence of deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV), diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS), and toxins T-2 (T2) and HT-2 (HT2) in 80 samples of commercial corn harvested in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. They were collected in the silos of the two largest corn farmer's cooperatives of this state. The samples were extracted with water/acetonitrile and cleaned-up with MycoSep columns. After trifluoroacetic anhydride derivatization the samples were submitted to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Detection limits ranged from 10 ng g -1 to 40 ng g-1. NIV was present in 5 samples and DON and NIV occurred simultaneously in one sample. DAS, T2 and HT2 were not detected. This is the first report that shows the prevalence of NIV over DON in com harvested in Brazil. © 2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.172412416Ueno, Y., (1983) Development in Food Science, 4.

Saliva samples were collected before (BASE), during an intensified training camp (CAMP), during an international competition period (COMP), and post competition recovery (REC) for analysis of cortisol, testosterone, and secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA). Illness symptoms, Daily Analysis of Life Demands of Athletes (DALDA), and training load were also monitored. Training load significantly increased from BASE during CAMP and COMP (p < 0.01), and SIgA secretion was higher during COMP compared to BASE and CAMP (p < 0.01). There was no change in salivary testosterone; however, salivary cortisol was elevated during COMP compared to BASE (93%, p < 0.05). DALDA ‘a scores’ were correlated with salivary cortisol (r = 0.429, p = 0.0001). The study demonstrates that a short period of intensified training and competition did not have a detrimental effect on mucosal immunity in elite synchronised swimmers; however, swimmers displayed higher cortisol levels during the competition and increased stress symptoms.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Effect of the type of application of Newcastle disease virus on the Ehrlich ascites tumor

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the tumours. Most authors use peritumoral application of virus. The purpose of our studz was to compare the effects of the ip in contrast to sc application of the virus on the ip and sc transplanted Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) in CBA/H mouse. We measured the length of survival, the tumor cure rates, the metastatic rate, and the frequencz of ascites and sc tumors in the site of ip EAT injection. Prolongation of survival after the therapy with NDV in ip transplanted EAT average time of survival in control group was 70.5 days, and 107 and 79.9 days with ip and sc NDV virus therapy respectively. The differences were significant only between control group and the group treated with ip application of NDV. Tumor cure rates were: ipNDV group 30%, scNDV group 20% and control group 5%. NDV therapy in sc transplanted EAT prolonged the time of survivalin control group it was 63.3 days, and 75.2 and 65.9 days with ip and sc NDV therapy respectively. NDV therapy inhibited metastatic rate of ip transplanted EAT. Inhibition was more effective with ip application of NDV. VIrus therapz also lowered the frequencz of appearance of ascites and sc tumour in the site of ip EAT injevtion. In sc transplanted EAT ip application of NDV inhibited the metastatic rate while in sc applied NDV some stimulation of metastasation was found. Ip application of NDV was found to be superior in contrast to sc application in all its therapeutic effects against EAT. Our results show that the tumor inhibition of NDV, in the system we used, has the characteristics of the biological response modifiers

NATURAL CONVECTION IN HIGH ASPECT RATIO THREE-DIMENSIONAL ENCLOSURES WITH UNIFORM HEAT FLUX ON THE HEATED WALL

    Get PDF
In this work, the laminar natural convection in high aspect ratio three-dimensional enclosures has been numerically studied. The enclosures studied here were heated with uniform heat flux on a vertical wall and cooled at constant temperature on the opposite wall. The remaining walls were considered adiabatic. Fluid properties were assumed constant except for the density change with temperature on the buoyancy term. The governing equations were solved using the finite volumes method and the dimensionless form of these equations has the Prandtl number and the modified Rayleigh number as parameters. The influences of the Rayleigh number and of the cavity aspect ratio on the Nusselt number, for a Prandtl number of 0.7, were analyzed. Results were obtained for values of the modified Rayleigh number up to 106 and for aspect ratios ranging from 1 to 20. The results were compared with two-dimensional results available in the literature and the variation of the average Nusselt number with the parameters studied were discussed
