A new tenthredinid species Caliroa crypta sp. nov. is described on the basis of one female from Estonia and one male from Finland. The new species slightly resembles C. tremulae Chevin but the sculpture of its abdominal terga is alutaceous-coriaceous like that in Endelomyia aethiops (Fabricius). The host plant and larva of the species are unknow

Taxonomy of the Empria hungarica species-group (Hymenoptera, Tenthredinidae) in Northern Europe

    Get PDF
In the tenthredinid hymenopteran genus Empria, the European species with a paired whitish patch on tergum 1 are considered tentatively as a species-group termed the E. hungarica group. The type materials of Empria pumila (Konow), E. pumiloides Lindqvist and E. tricornis Lindqvist were examined. The lectotype and paralectotypes of E. pumila are designated, and new diagnostic characters for E. pumila and E. pumiloides are given. A key for the Northern European species of the E. hungarica group is compiled. The results of a comparison of the phenology and some metrical characters of the adults of E. pumila and E. pumiloides are presented in the form of diagrams. E. pumiloides is recorded for the first time from Russia and Germany. The records of E. hungarica from Estonia (Saaremaa) are reported as the northernmost for that species. All available distributional records of Empria hungarica in the Palaearctic are given in the text, and those localized reliably are also mapped

While working on an identification guide to the sawflies of Fennoscandia, we encountered numerous taxonomic problems, for some of which we present solutions. Dicrostema Benson, 1952 is a new synonym of Phymatoceropsis Rohwer, 1916, and not congeneric with Paracharactus MacGillivray, 1908. Two species occurring in Europe are transferred to Phymatoceropsis. Dolerus aericepsellus Heidemaa and Mutanen sp. nov. and Heptamelus viitasaarii Liston, Mutanen and Prous sp. nov. are described from Finland. Abia brevicornis Leach, 1817 nom. rev. is the valid name of Abia nitens auct. nec Linnaeus, and Abia nitens (Linnaeus, 1758) is the valid name for what has recently been called Abia sericea (Linnaeus, 1767). Tenthredo haemorrhoidalis Fabricius, 1781 is treated as an unplaced species of Hymenoptera, possibly Ichneumonoidea. Calameuta variabilis (Mocsáry, 1886) is the valid name of the species recently generally called C. haemorrhoidalis. Claremontia confusa (Konow, 1886) sp. rev. and Claremontia brevicornis (Brischke, 1883) are distinct species. Dolerus coracinus (Klug, 1818) is the valid name for D. anthracinus auct. Dolerus anthracinus (Klug, 1818) is a valid species similar to D. nitens Zaddach, 1859. Dolerus coruscans Konow, 1890 sp. rev. is a valid species. Dolerus junci (Stephens, 1835) is the valid name for Dolerus cothurnatus auct. Dolerus timidus (Klug, 1818) sp. rev. is distinguished from the similar D. pratensis (Linnaeus, 1758). A neotype is designated for Astatus punctatus Klug, 1803. Lectotypes are designated for 39 nominal species. 29 species group names are new junior synonyms. We present data on some species recently collected for the first time in Finland, including first records for the Palaearctic and West Palaearctic

The tab delimited text file contains occurrence data and GenBank accession numbers for the studied specimens. Column headings are identical to Darwin Core terms (http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/index.htm), except "GenBank_COI", "GenBank_ITS1", and "GenBank_ITS2". These Column headings refer to GenBank accessions of cytochrome c oxidase I, internal transcribed spacer 1, and internal transcribed spacer 2 genes, respectively. A 157 bp fragment of cytochrome c oxidase I of specimen NSMT180 is also included under the column heading "COI_sequence"

Data from: Empria formosana sp. n. from Taiwan with notes on E. wui species group (Hymenoptera, Tenthredinidae)

Empria formosana Prous & Heidemaa, sp. n. is described from the mountains of Taiwan. The record is the first of this genus from Taiwan and one of the southernmost occurrences of the Empria species in the Palaearctic. The new species appears to be close to E. wui Wei & Nie, 1998 and some other species from China and Japan with incomplete vein 2A+3A in forewing (unique among Empria). Remarkably, E. formosana shows considerable intraspecific variation for this character. The mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (ITS1 and ITS2) sequences of three undescribed species morphologically closest to E. formosana and E. wui indicate that most likely they all form a monophyletic group within Empria, defined here as E. wui species group

The following eleven Empria species are reported from Japan: E. candidata (Fallén, 1808), E. japonica Heidemaa & Prous, 2011, E. liturata (Gmelin, 1790), E. loktini Ermolenko, 1971, E. plana (Jakowlew, 1891), E. quadrimaculata Takeuchi, 1952, E. rubicola Ermolenko, 1971, E. tridens (Konow, 1896), E. tridentis Lee & Ryu, 1996, E. honshuana Prous & Heidemaa, sp. n., and E. takeuchii Prous & Heidemaa sp. n. The lectotypes of Poecilosoma pallipes Matsumura, 1912, Empria itelmena Malaise, 1931, Tenthredo candidata Fallén, 1808, and Tenthredo (Poecilostoma) hybrida Erichson, 1851 are designated. Empria itelmena Malaise, 1931 (syn. n.) is synonymized with E. plana (Jakowlew, 1891). Poecilosoma pallipes Matsumura, 1912, previously assigned to Empria, is transferred to Monsoma, creating Monsoma pallipes (Matsumura, 1912), comb. n. Results of phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (ITS1 and ITS2) sequences are also provided
