Encoding of arbitrary micrometric complex illumination patterns with reduced speckle
In nonlinear microscopy, phase-only spatial light modulators (SLMs) allow
achieving simultaneous two-photon excitation and fluorescence emission from specific regionof-interests (ROIs). However, as iterative Fourier transform algorithms (IFTAs) can only
approximate the illumination of selected ROIs, both image formation and/or signal acquisition
can be largely affected by the spatial irregularities of the illumination patterns and the speckle
noise. To overcome these limitations, we propose an alternative complex illumination method
(CIM) able to generate simultaneous excitation of large-area ROIs with full control over the
amplitude and phase of light and reduced speckle. As a proof-of-concept we experimentally
demonstrate single-photon and second harmonic generation (SHG) with structured
illumination over large-area ROIs
Chronic disseminated histiocytosis is a systemic disorder
resulting from tumor proliferation of Langerhans-type
histiocytic cells. The etiology and pathogenesis are not fully
clear, though the clinical manifestations are the result of the
accumulation and infiltration of these types of cells in organs
and tissues. The present study reports 10 patients (6 boys and 4
girls) with chronic disseminated histiocytosis. The patient age
at onset of the disease varied from 4 months to 3.2 years (mean
1.7 years). All patients had oral lesions, and in 5 cases these
were the first manifestation of the disease. The most frequent
alterations were gingival bleeding (7 cases), aphthae measuring
over 1 cm in diameter (6 cases), maxillary osteolytic lesions (6
cases), tooth loss due to expulsive folliculitis (5 cases), oral
candidiasis (4 cases), orofacial swelling (3 cases), aphthae
measuring under 1 cm in diameter (3 cases), and nonspecific
oral pain (2 cases). All the oral lesions disappeared with the
treatments prescribed, though some patients developed new
outbreaks and exacerbations of the disease
High-Performance Concrete and Fiber-Reinforced High- Performance Concrete under Fatigue Efforts
Fatigue is the process of mechanical degradation of a material, which leads to its collapse. Repeated load applications with a maximum value lower than the one that provokes the static failure of the material, causes internal damage in the material that, progressively, reduces its mechanical capacity until it finally collapses. The increasingly widespread use of high-strength concretes permits the construction of more lightweight structures. This implies that the variable loads (which are the causes of fatigue) represent an ever larger percentage of the total load. In consequence, fatigue is an increasingly important factor in concrete structures. In some cases, it even begins to be the dimensioning load of the structure. In addition, the presence of fibers within the concrete modifies the fatigue response of the concrete. In this chapter, the classic theory of fatigue is presented in detail and the most recent developments in the study of concrete fatigue are discussed
Introduction: The primary stability of dental implants is related to the bone in contact with the latter, and can be evaluated by resonance frequency analysis. Material and methods: Measurements were made in 133 implants (62 in the upper jaw and 71 in the mandible) of resonance frequency and insertion force to determine implant stability on the day of surgery, with an evaluation of its relationship to different variables. Results: The stability quotient of the implants on the day of surgery was 62.1, with an insertion force of 35.7 N. The insertion force was proportional to the resonance frequency, with an increasing stability quotient with growing insertion force. The stability quotient was greater in the larger diameter implants, shorter implants, in mandibular placement and in areas of more compact bone. Conclusions: The stability quotient on the day of implant placement is greater in higher bone density areas

Diffractive control of 3D multifilamentation in fused silica with micrometric resolution
We show that a simple diffractive phase element (DPE) can be used to manipulate at will the positions and energy of multiple filaments generated in fused silica under femtosecond pulsed illumination. The method allows obtaining three-dimensional distributions of controlled filaments whose separations can be in the order of few micrometers. With such small distances we are able to study the mutual coherence among filaments from the resulted interference pattern, without needing a two-arm interferometer. The encoding of the DPE into a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) provides an extra degree of freedom to the optical set-up, giving more versatility for implementing different DPEs in real time. Our proposal might be particularly suited for applications at which an accurate manipulation of multiple filaments is required. We acknowledge support from Generalitat Valenciana through the programme PROMETEO-2012-021, University Jaume I through the project P1·1B2013-53, and Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) through the project FIS2013-40666-P.
