Evaluation of demineralized lignin and lignin-phenolic resin blends to produce biocoke suitable for blast furnace operation

Metallurgical coke makers could reduce carbon emissions and material costs by introducing waste lignin in coke oven charges. Two approaches have been studied here to increase the use of lignin in the preparation of metallurgical coke: lignin demineralization with H2SO4 and lignin blending with a low rank coal using phenolic resin as binder. The biocoke obtained after carbonization at 1000 °C from the hydrochar of demineralized lignin (350 °C, 6 h, biomass/water = 0.5 wt/wt) had much higher reactivity than the coke obtained from the low rank coking coal, proving that demineralization of lignin prior hydrothermal conversion is not a valid route for biocoke making. In the other approach, it was found that blends containing 70 wt% low rank coal, 24 wt% torrefied lignin (before or after demineralization) and 6 wt% phenolic resin produced biocokes with suitable mechanical strength for handling but higher reactivity than the coke obtained from the low rank coking coal alone. The microporous surface areas of the biocokes studied did not correlate with their reactivity values

A set of functions for the estimation of aerial biomass have been calculated on data from 17 Mediterranean shrub species. Together with the methods here used, those applied in the relevant literature are discussed. Simple structural parameters like cover, height and biovolume proved to scale allometrically with weight. Models based on raw untransformated data rendered the best results

This paper aims to study the situation of the recovery of the overdue portfolio of the Babahoyo Municipal Decentralized Autonomous Government (MDAG) in the municipal market 4 de Mayo . The problem consists in the difficulties arose in tax collection by the municipal government´s employees to this market. In the present investigation neutrosophic cognitive maps are applied to assess the relationship between every pair of causes of this problem. For the evaluation, we count on five experts’ criteria. Because there exist some pairs of causes whose relationship are unknown, neutrosophic cognitive maps are used instead of the fuzzy ones, where symbol I denotes indeterminate relationships among them. Additionally, the Ishikawa Diagram is applied, which is a simple graphical way to represent the causes and effects of problems

Efficient multilayer shallow-water simulation system based on GPUs

    Get PDF
The computational simulation of shallow stratified fluids is a very active research topic because these types of systems are very common in a variety of natural environments. The simulation of such systems can be modelled using multilayer shallow-water equations but do impose important computational requisites especially when applied to large domains. General Purpose Computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) has become a vivid research field due to the arrival of massively parallel hardware platforms (based on graphics cards) and adequate pro- gramming frameworks which have allowed important speed-up factors with respect to not only sequential but also parallel CPU based simulation systems. In this work we present a proposal for the simulation of shallow stratified fluids with an arbitrary number of layers using GPUs. The designed system does fully adapt to the many-core architecture of modern GPUs and several experiments have been carried out to illustrate its scalability and behavior on different GPU models. We propose a new elaborated 3D computational scheme for an underlying 2D mathematical model. This scheme allowed implementing a system capable of handling an arbitrary number of layers. The system adds no overhead when used for two-layer scenarios, compared to an existing 2D system specifically designed for just two layers. Our proposal is aimed at creating a GPU-based computational scheme suitable for the simulation of multilayer large-scale real-world scenarios.P11-FQM8179P11-RNM7069MTM2012-38383-C02-0

An MPI-CUDA implementation of an improved Roe method for two-layer shallow water systems

    Get PDF
The numerical solution of two-layer shallow water systems is required to simulate accurately stratified fluids, which are ubiquitous in nature: they appear in atmospheric flows, ocean currents, oil spills, . . . Moreover, the implementation of the numerical schemes to solve these models in realistic scenarios imposes huge demands of computing power. In this paper, we tackle the acceleration of these simulations in triangular meshes by exploiting the combined power of several CUDA-enabled GPUs in a GPU cluster. For that purpose, an improvement of a path conservative Roe type finite volume scheme which is specially suitable for GPU implementation is presented, and a distributed implementation of this scheme which uses CUDA and MPI to exploit the potential of a GPU cluster is developed. This implementation overlaps MPI communication with CPU-GPU memory transfers and GPU computation to increase efficiency. Several numerical experiments performed on a cluster of modern CUDA-enabled GPUs show the efficiency of the distributed solver

Characterization of 3d printing filaments applied in restoration of sensitive archaeological objects using rapid prototyping

[EN] Purpose The purpose of this paper is to characterize three-dimensional (3D) printing filaments commonly used in fused deposition modeling (FDM) to determine their viability for restoration and conservation treatments. Design/methodology/approach Eight current filaments for FDM from six polymeric materials have been characterized to determine their suitability for restoration and conservation treatments. For testing these filaments, specimens are printed with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene; polylactic acid; polylactic acid with CaCO3 (E.P.); polyethylene terephthalate glycol; polypropylene; and high-impact polystyrene. Suitability of a filament was verified using the Oddy test by detecting the action of volatile pollutants released from the filaments. The morphological and color changes were observed after allowing them to degrade under the exposure of UV radiation. The samples were then analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy technique was applied to complete the characterization of the printed filaments. Findings Materials investigated are suitable for restoration purposes ensuring long-term stability. Rapid prototyping using FDM is appropriate for restoring sensitive archaeological objects allowing reconstruction of parts and decreasing risk while manipulating delicate artifacts. Originality/value Rapid prototyping using FDM was chosen for the restoration of a fragile and sensitive archaeological glass bowl from Manises Ceramic Museum. This work is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), in the context of the research project "Desarrollo de un Sistema Integrado de Restauracion, Recomposicion, Restitucion y Representacion de Fragmentos Arqueologicos": HAR2015-69408-R (MINECO-FEDER).Aura-Castro, E.; Díaz-Marín, C.; Mas-Barberà, X.; Sánchez López, M.; Vendrell Vidal, E.
