Revisitar The Confessions of Nat Turner: La Censura en la Traducción Española

This paper studies the Spanish translation of William Styron’s The Confessions of Nat Turner. It observes the effects that institutional and self-censorship have had in Andrés Bosch’s version, first published in 1968 by Lumen as Las Confesiones de Nat Turner. Presented as the fictional autobiography of a historical figure, the novel is based on a failed revolt that took place in a Virginia plantation in 1831. The source context is described and contrasted with the target one, paying attention to the paratexts that have conditioned the novel’s reception in Spain. Accessing the General Archive of the Administration shows that Bosch’s translation was self-censored in a possible attempt to avoid the institutional intervention that would have delayed the book’s publication. Research also shows that this same version is the one being republished in the early twenty-first century.Este artículo estudia la traducción española de The Confessions of Nat Turner, de William Styron. Se observa cómo la censura institucional y la autocensura han influido en la versión de Andrés Bosch, que Lumen publicó por primera vez en 1968 con el título Las Confesiones de Nat Turner. Esta novela se presenta en calidad de autobiografía ficticia de una figura histórica, pues se basa en una revuelta fallida que sucedió en una plantación de Virginia en 1831. Se describe el contexto fuente y se contrasta con el meta para prestar atención a los paratextos que han condicionado la recepción de la novela en España. Al acceder al Archivo General de la Administración, se han descubierto indicios de autocensura en la traducción de Bosch, en un posible intento de evitar la intervención de las instituciones, la cual habría retrasado la publicación del libro. Margaret Walker's Jubileo : the first neo-slave narrative translated into spanish

This paper aims to examine the Spanish translation of Margaret Walker's Jubilee (1966), which was the first African American neo-slave narrative rendered into this target language, specifically, by Mercedes A. Carrera in 1968. An initial overview of the tradition of slave narratives helps understand the significance of Walker's novel and its contribution to this literary genre. This study looks into the context in which the source text was published and then focuses on the circumstances surrounding its translation and release in Spain. By observing the book's reception in the United States, the source and target paratexts, and the state censorship that conditioned Spanish publishers, this work delves into the portrayal of alterity in Walker's text and how Carrera's choices as a translator have influenced the depiction of Black slaves' otherness in the target culture. Particularly, it analyzes the Spanish translation of the semantic fields of skin color and the world of Southern plantations, the characters' meaningful names, and the slaves' literary dialect.Este artículo trata de examinar la traducción española de Jubileo, de Margaret Walker (1966). Fue la primera novela de esclavitud afroamericana que se vertió a dicha lengua meta en 1968 y su traductora es Mercedes A. Carrera. La aproximación inicial a la tradición de las narraciones de esclavos ayuda a comprender la relevancia de la novela de Walker y su contribución a este género literario. Este trabajo observa el contexto en que se publicó el texto fuente para luego centrarse en las circunstancias de su traducción y lanzamiento en España. Al analizar la recepción de la obra en la cultura estadounidense, los paratextos que acompañan a los textos fuente y meta y la censura estatal que condicionó a los editores españoles, el artículo ahonda en cómo se retrata la alteridad en el libro de Walker y el modo en que las decisiones traductoras de Carrera influyen en el reflejo de la otredad de los esclavos negros en la cultura meta. En particular, se analiza la traducción española de los campos semánticos del color de la piel y del mundo de las plantaciones sureñas, los nombres parlantes de los personajes y el dialecto literario de los esclavos

From interstellar systems to terrestrial organic and biomolecules: a synergetic theoretical and experimental rotational study

The hunt for new complex organic molecules (COMs) in the interstellar medium (ISM) based on the synergy between radio astronomy and rotational spectroscopy is among the most coveted targets in current Astronomy and Astrophysics. Recent improvements in sensitivity, bandwidth, and spatial resolution in instrumentation at existing telescopes, together with the construction of new observational facilities, have opened a new window of possibilities for studying rich astronomical sources, awaiting the detection of entirely new species. Furthermore, understanding their formation pathways and their corresponding intricate chemical networks remains some of the key challenges for Astrochemistry. In this context, the scientific community is constantly pushing the limits of the complexity of interstellar chemistry, highlighting the recent detection of systems of unparalleled degrees of complexity, such as cyanonaftalene or ethanolamine. Nevertheless, many molecules that are reasonable interstellar candidates remain unexplored even in the laboratory because they are solid and labile molecules with very low vapor pressure, which usually decompose during conventional experiments. To overcome the urgent need for rotational data, in the first part of the present Thesis, we have carried out a combinational theoretical and laboratory rotational study of several COMs as a prerequisite to search for them in the ISM. Hence, we have used a battery of state-of-the-art rotational spectroscopic techniques to characterize the rotational spectrum of several relevant glycine isomers: acetohydroxamic acid and glycolamide; two cyano bearing compounds: cyanoacetamide and cyanoacetic acid; as well as two aldehydes: n- and i-butyraldehyde, together with a purely computational study of amino acetaldehyde. Moreover, we have explored the potential energy surfaces (PES) on the gas-phase formation of several protonated glycine isomers along with protonated cyanoacetamide, finding for each case a feasible interstellar formation process. Our precise laboratory measurements have been subsequently used to search for some of the studied molecular systems toward the giant molecular cloud complex Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) using different ALMA line surveys and toward the cold molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027 employing IRAM 30-m and Yebes 40-m observations. Regardless of the differences in their physical-chemical properties, both astronomical sources stand among the richest chemical inventories in the ISM. To date, we have not achieved any positive identification of the studied molecules. Nevertheless, the experimental data reported in this thesis will also enable eventual searches for the yet undetected species in the ISM using new and more sensitive astronomical line surveys. These future identifications in space should establish a road map that will help to understand the levels of chemical complexity reached in the ISM, as well as to decipher the link between interstellar chemistry and the rich chemical reservoir found in comets and meteorites. In the second part of this Thesis, we have taken advantage of the excellent sensitivity and specificity of our laser ablation Fourier transform microwave techniques to unleash the conformational panorama and molecular shape of several organic and biomolecules for the first time. Herein, we report a comprehensive microwave study of the amino acid L-DOPA and unveil the three-dimensional structure of two organic synthons of significant relevance: squaric acid and its water clusters and a “shape-shifting” (fluxional) substituted barbaralone. The latest exhibit an interesting valence tautomerism, which has been conclusively deciphered in the gas phase using rotational spectroscopy. We also analyze the role of the intramolecular interactions that modulate the conformational behavior of these systems using a combination of precise experimental data, such as the analysis of the 14N hyperfine structure in the case of N-bearing species (i.e., L-DOPA) and quantum chemical computations.Departamento de Química Física y Química InorgánicaDoctorado en Químic

A prospect of the Iberian nautical scene in the 16th and 17th centuries: development, innovations and naval warfare

Desde finales del siglo xv hasta el último tercio del xvii las naciones ibéricas ostentaron el dominio de los mares y océanos del orbe a través de un claro liderazgo en la tecnología naval. El principal objetivo de este artículo es ofrecer una aproximación general al desarrollo naval hispánico en los siglos xvi y xvii, organizándose para ello en tres bloques diferenciados. En primer lugar, una breve introducción a la navegación a inicios de la modernidad junto a los elementos humanos, científicos y técnicos que la hicieron posible. Tras este preludio, le sigue el grueso del trabajo en el que se desgranan los distintos aspectos de las armadas hispánicas del momento, procurando ofrecer al lector una visión de conjunto a partir de la cual pueda profundizar mediante los numerosos autores mencionados. Finalmente, en el último bloque se analiza su aplicación bélica desde los puntos de vista táctico y tecnológico, pues su desarrollo supuso la génesis de la guerra naval moderna tan determinante en la balanza geopolítica de los siglos subsiguientesThe Iberian nations held control of the seas from the late 15th century up to the second half of the 17th century through a clear leadership in nautical architectural innovations. The main target of this article is to approach the issue of the Spanish maritime technological development in the 16th and 17th centuries. To do so, the information is divided into three parts, starting with a brief introduction to navigation at the beginning of Modern Age together with the human, scientific and technical elements that made it possible. After this prelude, the bulk of the article examines different aspects of the Hispanic Navy, offering an overall view through the contributions of the numerous authors mentioned. Finally, an analysis of its application to naval warfare is presented from a tactical and technological perspective, since its development supposed the genesis of modern naval war and defined the geopolitical balance of the subsequent centurie

Algoritmos adaptativos de núcleos de Mercer

El objetivo de este Proyecto Fin de Carrera es la introducción del kernel recursivo en los algoritmos lineales de kernel, en nuestro caso utilizaremos los algoritmos KLMS y KRLS, para su aplicación a los sistemas de comunicación como es en nuestro caso. Dichos algoritmos serán usados en el procesado de un arrays de antenas y observaremos cómo se comportan en diferentes escenarios. El array de antenas utilizado para estas pruebas, consta de un array lineal de 7 elementos, dichos elementos son antenas de tipo dipolo que trabajan a una frecuencia de 3 GHz, usando una modulación BPSK y están separados entre si una distancia de λ=2. Además, tendremos que tener en cuenta que al tratarse de antenas dipolo se producirán varios efectos como es el acoplamiento mutuo de las señales entre los diferentes elementos. También tendremos que tener en cuenta la conformación del haz de la antena, hacia donde esta direccionada y las posibles diferencias temporales de las señales recibidas debido al multitrayecto. Utilizaremos un conformador de haz que se encargara de minimizar la probabilidad de error al detectar la señal de entrada. En nuestro caso utilizaremos un conformador de haz con referencia temporal adaptativo. Esto es debido a que al minimizar la probabilidad de error utilizaremos los algoritmos lineales de kernel ya mencionados, sobre una matriz de kernel recursiva. Para finalizar compararemos el comportamiento de estos algoritmos sobre la matriz de kernel recursiva y sobre la matriz de kernel no recursiva. De esta comparación esperamos comprobar que al usar la matriz de kernel recursivo, minimizamos la probabilidad de error que obteníamos sin usar el método recursivo de error que obteníamos sin usar el método recursivo.Ingeniería Técnica en Sistemas de Telecomunicació
