    Description and preliminary calibration results for the Langley hypersonic CF4 tunnel

    A detailed description of the hypersonic CF4 tunnel is presented along with discussion of the basic components, instrumentation, and operating procedure. Operational experience with the CF4 reclaimer and lead-bath heater is discussed. Comparison of measured and predicted shock detachment distance on a sphere and pressure distributions measured on a sharp leading-edge flat plate revealed the absence of significant flow nonuniformity and lent creditability to predicted free stream flow conditions. The economic operation of this facility centers about the CF4 reclaimer, which was designed to operate at an efficiency of 90 to 95 percent. A number of modifications were made to the reclaimer system to improve its performance, and presently, the system reclaims approximately 75 percent of the test gas. Even with current budgetary constraints, this efficiency permits the CF4 tunnel to be operated as a viable research wind tunnel

    Holographic flow visualization at the Langley CF4 tunnel

    A holographic flow visualization system was used to obtain shadowgraph, schlieren, and interferograms of the flow field at Langley's hypersonic (Mach 6) CF4 tunnel. The dual hologram technique which was used makes it possible to vary focusing, knife-edge position, and the orientation and spacing of the interference fringes after a tunnel run. The experimental arrangement necessary to produce high quality interferograms is discussed. Typical shadowgraphs, schlieren pictures, and interferograms are presented

    Mach 4 free-jet tunnel starting experiments for a hypersonic research engine model causing high blockage

    Tests of a full scale hypersonic research engine (HRE) were conducted in the hypersonic tunnel facility at Mach numbers of 5, 6, and 7. Since the HRE would cause a rather high blockage (48.83 percent of the nozzle area), subscale tests were conducted in various available small wind tunnels prior to the full scale tests to study the effects of model blockage on tunnel starting. The results of the Mach 4 subscale tests which utilized a model system at 0.0952 scale which simulated the HRE in the test section of the tunnel are presented. A satisfactory tunnel starting could not be achieved by varying the free jet length or diffuser size nor by inserting the model into the test stream after tunnel starting. However, the installation of a shroud around the HRE model allowed the tunnel to start with the model preset in the tunnel at a tunnel stagnation pressure to atmospheric exit pressure ratio of 13.4. The simulation of the discharge of instrumentation cooling water and the addition of test hardware at the aft end of the HRE model did not have a significant effect on the tunnel starting

    NbS3_{3}: A unique quasi one-dimensional conductor with three charge density wave transitions

    Through transport, compositional and structural studies, we review the features of the charge-density wave (CDW) conductor of NbS3_{3} (phase II). We highlight three central results: 1) In addition to the previously reported CDW transitions at TP1T_{P1} = 360\,K and TP2T_{P2} = 150\,K, another CDW transition occurs at a much higher temperature TP0T_{P0} = 620-650\,K; evidence for the non-linear conductivity of this CDW is presented. 2) We show that CDW associated with the TP2T_{P2} - transition arises from S vacancies acting as donors. Such a CDW transition has not been observed before. 3) We show exceptional coherence of the TP1T_{P1}-CDW at room-temperature. Additionally, we report on the effects of uniaxial strain on the CDW transition temperatures and transport.Comment: 16 pages, 18 figure

    Perception of Nuclear Energy and Coal in France and the Netherlands

    This study focuses on the perception of large scale application of nuclear energy and coal in the Netherlands and France. The application of these energy-sources and the risks and benefits are judged differently by various group in society. In Europe, France has the highest density of nuclear power plants and the Netherlands has one of the lowest. In both countries scientists and social scientists completed a questionnaire assessing the perception of the large scale application of both energy sources. Furthermore, a number of variables relating to the socio cultural and political circumstances were measured. The results indicate that the French had a higher risk perception and a more negative attitude toward nuclear power than the Dutch. But they also assess the benefits of the use of nuclear power to be higher. Explanations for these differences are discussed

    Charge density wave ordering in NbSe3: possible models and the experimental evidence

    Charge density wave (CDW) ordering in the prototypical low-dimensional compound NbSe3 is reconsidered. We show that the widely accepted CDW model with two incommensurate modulations, q1 = (0,0.241,0) and q2 = (0.5,0.260,0.5), localized on type-III and type-I bi-capped trigonal prismatic (BCTP) columns, does not explain some details, revealed by various microscopic methods. The suggested alternative explanation is in a better accord with the entire experimental evidence, including low-temperature (LT) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results. It is based on the existence of modulated layered nano-domains formed below both CDW onset temperatures. According to this model, two of the three slightly different BCTP types of columns are modulated by the same wave vector, either q1 or q2, which can easily switch over in a domain as a whole. This approach explains the presence of the q2 modulation in the STM images recorded above the T2 CDW transition and the absence of the q2 satellites in the corresponding diffraction patterns. The long periodic modulation, detected by LT STM is attributed to a beating between the two CDWs, centered on adjacent columns of the same type. These pairs of columns, both either of type-III or type-I, modulated by the two alternative CDWs, represent the basic modulation units, ordered into nano-domains
