Chromospheric CaII Emission in Nearby F, G, K, and M stars
We present chromospheric CaII activity measurements, rotation periods and
ages for ~1200 F-, G-, K-, and M- type main-sequence stars from ~18,000
archival spectra taken at Keck and Lick Observatories as a part of the
California and Carnegie Planet Search Project. We have calibrated our
chromospheric S values against the Mount Wilson chromospheric activity data.
From these measurements we have calculated median activity levels and derived
R'HK, stellar ages, and rotation periods for 1228 stars, ~1000 of which have no
previously published S values. We also present precise time series of activity

Searching for Planets in the Hyades II: Some Implications of Stellar Magnetic Activity
The Hyades constitute a homogeneous sample of stars ideal for investigating
the dependence of planet formation on the mass of the central star. Due to
their youth, Hyades members are much more chromospherically active than stars
traditionally surveyed for planets using high precision radial velocity (RV)
techniques. Therefore, we have conducted a detailed investigation of whether
magnetic activity of our Hyades target stars will interfere with our ability to
make precise RV searches for substellar companions. We measure chromospheric
activity (which we take as a proxy for magnetic activity) by computing the
equivalent of the R'HK activity index from the Ca II K line. is not
constant in the Hyades: we confirm that it decreases with increasing
temperature in the F stars, and also find it decreases for stars cooler than
mid-K. We examine correlations between simultaneously measured R'HK and RV
using both a classical statistical test and a Bayesian odds ratio test. We find
that there is a significant correlation between R'HK and the RV in only 5 of
the 82 stars in this sample. Thus, simple Rprime HK-RV correlations will
generally not be effective in correcting the measured RV values for the effects
of magnetic activity in the Hyades. We argue that this implies long timescale
activity variations (of order a few years; i.e., magnetic cycles or growth and
decay of plage regions) will not significantly hinder our search for planets in
the Hyades if the stars are closely monitored for chromospheric activity. The
trends in the RV scatter (sigma'_v) with , vsini, and P_rot for our stars
is generally consistent with those found in field stars in the Lick planet
search data, with the notable exception of a shallower dependence of sigma'_v

Influence of gender on the performance of urine dipstick and automated urinalysis in the diagnosis of urinary tract infections at the emergency department
BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are frequently encountered at the Emergency Department (ED). Given the anatomical differences between men and women, we aimed to clarify differences in the diagnostic performance of urinary parameters at the ED. METHODS: A cohort study of adults presenting at the ED with fever and/or clinical suspected UTI. Performance of urine dipstick (UD) and automated urinalysis (UF-1000i) were analysed for the total study population and men and women separately. We focused on 1) UTI diagnosis and 2) positive urine culture (UC, ≥105 CFU/ml) as outcome. RESULTS: In 360 of 917 cases (39.3%) UTI was established (men/women 35.1%/43.6%). Diagnostic accuracy of UD was around 10% lower in women compared to men. Median automated leucocyte and bacterial count were higher in women compared to men. Diagnostic performance by receiver operating analysis was 0.851 for leucocytes (men/women 0.879/0.817) and 0.850 for bacteria (men/women 0.898/0.791). At 90% sensitivity, cut-off values of leucocyte count (men 60/µL, women 43/µL), and bacterial count (men 75/µL, women 139/µL) showed performance differences in favour of men. In both men and women, diagnostic performance using specified cut-off values was not different between normal and non-normal bladder evacuation. UC was positive in 327 cases (men/women 149/178), as with UTI diagnosis, diagnostic values in men outperformed women. CONCLUSIONS: Overall diagnostic accuracy of urinary parameters for diagnosing UTI is higher in men. The described differences in cut-off values for leukocyte and bacterial counts for diagnosing UTI necessitates gender-specific cut-off values, probably reflecting the influence of anatomical and urogenital differences

Prevalence of small osteophytes on knee MRI in several large clinical and population-based studies of various age groups and OA risk factors
Objective: Osteophytes, also small ones, are an important imaging feature of OA. However, due to their high prevalence on MR, the question has arisen whether these are truly pathophysiologic features of early OA, a result of physiologic aging, or rather a merely transient phenomenon. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of osteophytes on MR in various locations of the knee, with special emphasis on small osteophytes, across multiple large studies conducted in our institution comprising a wide range of subjects at different ages. Method: Retrospective explorative study of the prevalence of osteophytes, particularly grade 1 according to MOAKS, among four studies with a wide variety in age and OA risk factors. Results: A large number of grade 1 osteophytes were found in all four studies. The largest number of osteophytes were present in the youngest age group of <30 years (69.6%) compared to 36.8% in the age group of ≥30 ​< ​50 years and 54,3% when aged ≥50 years, of which most were grade 1 osteophytes. Conclusion: Small osteophytes are highly prevalent among populations with varying age and OA risk factors, in particular among young subjects without other OA features. This might suggest that these “osteophytes” do not necessarily represent early OA, but rather indicate a transient physiologic phenomenon.</p
Prevalence of radiographic ankle osteoarthritis in different subgroups of patients referred for ankle radiography
P15-13. HVTN 503(Phambili) trial discontinuation of enrolment/vaccination: the impact on trial participant attitudes to vaccine trials and scientific research
Background: The HVTN 503/Phambili trial, a phase IIB study of the Merck Ad-5 HIV vaccine, suspended enrollment and vaccinations following results of the HVTN502/STEP study. Participants were notified of their treatment allocation and continue to be followed. We investigated the impact of the suspension on trial participants' attitudes towards HIV vaccine trials and scientific research. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire investigating knowledge and attitudes utilising a five-point likert scale, was administered 12–18 months post suspension at the 4 Phambili trial sites implementing the latest protocol. Results: Of 544 participants enrolled at 4 sites, 490 completed the questionnaire. 51% understood that vaccination, and 31% that enrolment had been permanently discontinued. Although 85% knew Phambili DSMB recommendations were based on results of the STEP study, only 51% knew that the results showed more infections in the vaccine arm. Although 90% knew they should continue protecting themselves against HIV, only 33% acknowledged trialists' concerns that the vaccine may make them more susceptible to HIV. Knowledge was similar across sites. 12% had tested for HIV antibodies outside of the trial before unblinding to establish their treatment allocation. 46% felt disappointed, angry or afraid, primarily because the vaccine would not prevent HIV in their community. 79% said they would engage in less risk behaviour. 94% thought the study team had made the correct decision by unblinding them and 96% thought site-participant communication was appropriate. 91% felt they made the right decision to enrol in Phambili and 91% planned to continue attending scheduled visits. 86% support scientific research and 80% would want to participate in future HIV vaccine. Conclusion: Despite site communications, knowledge levels were low. Importantly, most knew they should continue to protect themselves against HIV. Although almost half of participants reported negative feelings, most attitudes towards trial sites, scientific research and HIV vaccine trials were positive
To what extent is climate change adaptation a novel challenge for agricultural modellers?
Modelling is key to adapting agriculture to climate change (CC), facilitating evaluation of the impacts and efficacy of adaptation measures, and the design of optimal strategies. Although there are many challenges to modelling agricultural CC adaptation, it is unclear whether these are novel or, whether adaptation merely adds new motivations to old challenges. Here, qualitative analysis of modellers’ views revealed three categories of challenge: Content, Use, and Capacity. Triangulation of findings with reviews of agricultural modelling and Climate Change Risk Assessment was then used to highlight challenges specific to modelling adaptation. These were refined through literature review, focussing attention on how the progressive nature of CC affects the role and impact of modelling. Specific challenges identified were: Scope of adaptations modelled, Information on future adaptation, Collaboration to tackle novel challenges, Optimisation under progressive change with thresholds, and Responsibility given the sensitivity of future outcomes to initial choices under progressive change
