    Housing for Assisted Living in Inner-City Winnipeg: A Social Analysis of Housing Options for People with Disabilities

    People with disabilities who have complex health and housing needs have limited housing options. Younger adults with disabilities, for example, are inappropriately placed in personal care homes with seniors when the cost of supporting a person in her or his own home exceeds the cost of supporting her or him in an institutional setting. Over the last decade, a working group called the Housing for Assisted Living (HAL) Committee has been seeking a solution to this problem in Winnipeg. The HAL Committee recently identified a building in the Logan area of Winnipeg's Inner City to re- develop as an assisted living facility that will provide a range of on-site support services for people with disabilities within an integrated setting. This research project gathered information about social issues in the area where the assisted living facility is being developed. The findings will help ensure the long-term success of the HAL project, which will be beneficial for people with disabilities in particular and Winnipeg as a whole. Working from a cross-disability perspective, we utilized a participatory action research approach. Thirty in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with people with disabilities who have complex health and housing needs, people with disabilities currently living in the Inner City, and representatives of agencies that provide housing and other services in Winnipeg to people with disabilities. The data from these interviews was analyzed and the major themes were compiled into a preliminary report that was distributed to all study participants who reviewed the research findings and provided feedback

    Multi-Band Acoustic Monitoring of Aerial Signatures

    The Galileo Project's acoustic monitoring, omni-directional system (AMOS) aids in the detection and characterization of aerial phenomena. It uses a multi-band microphone suite spanning infrasonic to ultrasonic frequencies, providing an independent signal modality for validation and characterization of detected objects. The system utilizes infrasonic, audible, and ultrasonic systems to cover a wide range of sounds produced by both natural and man-made aerial phenomena. Sound signals from aerial objects can be captured given certain conditions, such as when the sound level is above ambient noise and isn't excessively distorted by its transmission path. Findings suggest that audible sources can be detected up to 1 km away, infrasonic sources can be detected over much longer distances, and ultrasonic at shorter ones. Initial data collected from aircraft recordings with spectral analysis will help develop algorithms and software for quick identification of known aircraft. Future work will involve multi-sensor arrays for sound localization, larger data sets analysis, and incorporation of machine learning and AI for detection and identification of more types of phenomena in all frequency bands

    International Pediatric ORL Group (IPOG) laryngomalacia consensus recommendations

    Objective To provide recommendations for the comprehensive management of young infants who present with signs or symptoms concerning for laryngomalacia. Methods Expert opinion by the members of the International Pediatric Otolaryngology Group (IPOG). Results Consensus recommendations include initial care and triage recommendations for health care providers who commonly evaluate young infants with noisy breathing. The consensus statement also provides comprehensive care recommendations for otolaryngologists who manage young infants with laryngomalacia including: evaluation and treatment considerations for commonly debated issues in laryngomalacia, initial work-up of infants presenting with inspiratory stridor, treatment recommendations based on disease severity, management of the infant with feeding difficulties, post-surgical treatment management recommendations, and suggestions for acid suppression therapy.     Smaller classes promote equitable student participation in STEM

    Under embargo until: 2020-07-24As science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classrooms in higher education transition from lecturing to active learning, the frequency of student interactions in class increases. Previous research documents a gender bias in participation, with women participating less than would be expected on the basis of their numeric proportions. In the present study, we asked which attributes of the learning environment contribute to decreased female participation: the abundance of in-class interactions, the diversity of interactions, the proportion of women in class, the instructor's gender, the class size, and whether the course targeted lower division (first and second year) or upper division (third or fourth year) students. We calculated likelihood ratios of female participation from over 5300 student–instructor interactions observed across multiple institutions. We falsified several alternative hypotheses and demonstrate that increasing class size has the largest negative effect. We also found that when the instructors used a diverse range of teaching strategies, the women were more likely to participate after small-group discussions.acceptedVersio

    A Review of Events That Expose Children to Elemental Mercury in the United States

    Concern for children exposed to elemental mercury prompted the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to review the sources of elemental mercury exposures in children, describe the location and proportion of children affected, and make recommendations on how to prevent these exposures. In this review, we excluded mercury exposures from coal-burning facilities, dental amalgams, fish consumption, medical waste incinerators, or thimerosal-containing vaccines. We reviewed federal, state, and regional programs with data on mercury releases along with published reports of children exposed to elemental mercury in the United States. We selected all mercury-related events that were documented to expose (or potentially expose) children. Primary exposure locations were at home, at school, and at others such as industrial property not adequately remediated or medical facilities. Exposure to small spills from broken thermometers was the most common scenario; however, reports of such exposures are declining. The information reviewed suggests that most releases do not lead to demonstrable harm if the exposure period is short and the mercury is properly cleaned up.
