A Systematic Literature Review of Project Management Tools and Their Impact on Project Management Effectiveness

    Get PDF
This thesis was conducted to examine project effectiveness and the best methodologies to use for managing projects as supported by the literature. Project effectiveness depends on multiple dimensions and has many situational issues that demand flexibility in method selection and utilization. Three of the most important dimensions explored in this study included: organizational structures, cost and schedule management typologies and leadership styles. A systematic literature review was utilized to collect data on the most common project management methods found to be effective according to the current literature. As projects are complex and vary greatly it was concluded from the literature that project management effectiveness cannot be measured by a single metric. An outline of methods and tools that may best be utilized based on project type and needs was created to better understand potential applications for each method and tool

Influence of leader efficacy and emotional intelligence on personal caring in physical activity

Journal ArticleScholars in youth development, education, and sport are examining the formative contexts of classrooms, music halls, and playing fields to gain a better understanding of positive development in children. Of particular interest are the leaders in these contexts (e.g., teachers, conductors, and coaches) and their ability to nurture the social-emotional skills that provide the foundation for development across the lifespan (Elias, 2003; Kress, Norris, Schoenholz, Elias, & Seigle, 2004). Learning contexts that emphasize caring are fundamental to positive development because a caring and supportive environment positively influences children's social-emotional competencies, character development, and personal mastery (Elias, 2003; Kress et al., 2004; Noblit, 1993; Noblit, Rogers, & McCadden, 1995; Noddings, 1995, 2002; Tappan, 1998; Wentzel, 1997)

Co-Design Apprenticeships & Future Workforce Pathways: Corporate HR & University Partnerships

Strategic Opportunity: The workforce is ever-changing. Our latest challenge is finding workers who walk in with our needed skills and knowledge. This developed workforce is scarce and expensive. With the current workforce skills gaps increasing and rapidly changing job requirements, we need to think strategically and maximize all of our learning and development programs and dollars. This roundtable will discuss using tuition assistance and apprenticeships to create leadership development programs effectively and efficiently through partnerships. We will discuss the untapped opportunities within tuition assistance programs and how to align training and tuition assistance programs to build leadership pipelines about their personal experiences and are least likely to center on experiential learning. What we will explore: Rich will kick-off this roundtable with a five minute overview of IMSA’s vision statement is “by 2022, IMSA is a recognized global leader and catalyst in equity and excellence in STEM teaching and learning, innovation and entrepreneurship.” Followed by Michelle sharing a five-minute overview of Home Depot’s partnership with Bellevue University to create leadership pathways. This discussion of practical insights will dive into questions that look at Career Development from Talent Risk perspective like: Is the recent abandoning the four-year degree as a qualification a break from hiring orthodoxy or a short-term fad? As reported in the news recently, high-paying tech outlets like Apple, Google, and IBM, in addition to service-oriented companies like Costco, Starbucks, and Chipotle. Let’s explore why so many companies still insist upon a degree in the first place. How are assessments and frameworks for critical capabilities used to identify development needs? To what extent does your organizations use early career development to attract future talent? What are the “Must Have” practices for early career development? What measures are demonstrating the impact of early career development

The Perceived Effectiveness of Community Programs in Reducing and Deterring Juvenile Delinquency

Indianapolis, the capital of the U.S. state of Indiana, continues to experience a high rate of offenses committed by juvenile offenders. Community programs are in place to assist in the deterrence and/or reduction of juvenile crimes, yet the city’s crime rate continues to increase with youth being the perpetrator of many of these crimes. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived effectiveness of these programs, which has not been adequately studied. The research questions focused on identifying which of the city’s current programs are perceived as being effective or ineffective in reducing juvenile delinquency and why so. The participants were 15 adults between the ages of 21 years old through 35 years old who were a part of the juvenile justice system as youth. Phenomenological research was used with Agnew’s strain theory as the theoretical framework. Data were collected through guided interviews and analyzed using NVivo, which allowed for coding and categorizing of the collected data. The key findings were that most of the programs were perceived as effective by 80% (n = 12) of the study participants. Three (20%) of the study participants perceived the programs as being ineffective. The study data can assist stakeholders in gauging the effectiveness of community programs and in making the community more aware of programs in place for youth, which may improve program participation and decrease recidivism. Policy makers in other communities may also be able to use the data to assist with their community programs. The data from the study supports the need for social change. Social change can occur through the evaluation, revamping, or elimination of programs considered ineffective, staff professional development, and more parental involvement. Through these changes, positive reinforcement can be instilled in youth

Likeability and perceived effectiveness of messages designed to encourage physical activity participation among older adults

Issue addressed: Older adults are significantly less likely than their younger counterparts to engage in physical activity. Comprehensive policies to support healthy ageing thus need to include components encouraging greater participation in physical activity in later life. This study tested potential messages for use in health communication campaigns aimed at increasing physical activity among older adults. Methods: Twelve written messages designed to encourage older adults to increase their levels of physical activity were rated by Australians aged 60-92 years (n = 369; 54 % female) on the variables of likeability and perceived effectiveness. Results: Ratings for all the tested messages were high across both outcome variables. The message Move more, live longer scored most favourably, with large majorities of participants liking this message (87 %) and considering it effective (81 %). Messages featuring rhyming or alliteration were rated significantly higher on both outcomes than messages without these attributes (all Ps \u3c .001). Conclusions: Results provide insights into the types of messages that are likely to be accepted by older adults. Statements that use the phonological patterns of rhyming or alliteration are likely to be especially well received. So What?: Increasing participation in physical activity among older adults is critical to promoting the sustainability of health care systems and enhancing quality of life. The specific messaging attributes identified in the present study as being effective could be used by public health practitioners to inform their approach to physical activity messaging to older adults and incorporated into future health communication campaigns to increase their potential effectiveness with this target group

Introduction of a non-ported peripheral intravenous catheter with multi-use blood control septum offers improvements in the overall efficiency of the procedure and is clinically well accepted

Financial challenges that the National Health Service (NHS), England, faces may jeopardise its future. This study evaluated the direct cost of using two different safety peripheral intravenous cannulae (SPIVC) with and without a blood control septum, including the cost of device and clinician time. Observation of 103 cannulations demonstrated a 54 second (29%) time reduction per cannulation with the non-ported SPIVC with multi-use blood control septum (Introcan Safety® 3 B Braun), compared to the standard ported SPIVC (Vasofix® Safety B Braun) (P<0.05). The direct cost analysis, including clinician time, demonstrated that the introduction of SPIVC with multi-use blood control septum could offer time efficiency savings equivalent to a reduction in average cannulation costs by 25%. Eighty two per cent of users perceived the insertion of SPIVC with multi-use blood control septum to be easy to use; 82% would choose to use it in clinical practice
