    Transferability of Insights from Fundamental Investigations into Practical Applications of Prechamber Combustion Systems

    Efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from spark ignition engines have driven engine development to lean-burn or high-dilution operation, which results in high combustion variability as well as increased unburned hydrocarbon emissions. A widely used technology to reduce these issues are prechamber ignition systems, in which the external ignition source is located in a separate small volume, connected to the main chamber via small orifices. This setup allows for design of favourable ignition conditions near the ignition source, which results in fast and repeatable early flame propagation. The pressure increase resulting from combustion taking place inside the prechamber leads to the ejection of jets containing hot combustion products and possibly active radicals into the main chamber, which ignite the lean or diluted mixture; this process is often dubbed turbulent jet ignition or TJI. The use of TJI systems in engines allows the combustion of very lean/diluted mixtures, resulting in higher efficiencies and lower NOx emissions. In this work we shed light into the importance of quenching for practical applications involving turbulent jet ignition. This is achieved through optical investigations in a generic, constant volume test-rig, combined with zero-dimensional (0-D) model calculations. The 0-D model is applied to the generic setup and in real engine applications under varying operating conditions, in order to highlight the relative importance of quenching under the various thermochemical conditions encountered. The results indicate that thermal quenching in the nozzle should not be expected due to the small flame thickness under high pressure encountered in internal combustion engines. Nevertheless, under the jet mixing conditions expected in engines, hydrodynamic quenching due to mixing of burned products with unburned (cold) main chamber mixture can be expected. In most engine conditions, the re-ignition process of the initially quenched jet after their exit from the prechamber is expected to be so fast, that quenching will not be apparent in most measurements

    Facies architecture of submarine channel deposits on the western Niger Delta slope: Implications for grain-size and density stratification in turbidity currents

    High-resolution bathymetry, seismic reflection, and piston core data from a submarine channel on the western Niger Delta slope demonstrate that thick, coarse-grained, amalgamated sands in the channel thalweg/axis transition to thin, fine-grained, bedded sands and muds in the channel margin. Radiocarbon ages indicate that axis and margin deposits are coeval. Core data show that bed thickness, grain size, and deposition rate strongly decrease with increasing height above channel thalweg and/or distance from channel centerline. A 5 times decrease in bed thickness and 1\u20132 \u3c8 decrease in grain size are evident over a 20 m elevation change (approximately the elevation difference between axis and margin). A simplified in-channel sedimentation model that solves vertical concentration and velocity profiles of turbidity currents accurately reproduces the vertical trends in grain size and bed thickness shown in the core data set. The close match between data and model suggests that the vertical distribution of grain size and bed thickness shown in this study is widely applicable and can be used to predict grain size and facies variation in data-poor areas (e.g., subsurface cores). This study emphasizes that facies models for submarine channel deposits should recognize that grain-size and thickness trends within contemporaneous axis-margin packages require a change in elevation above the thalweg. The transition from thick-bedded, amalgamated, coarser-grained sands to thin-bedded, nonamalgamated, finer-grained successions is primarily a reflection of a change in elevation.     How typhoons trigger turbidity currents in submarine canyons

    Intense turbidity currents occur in the Malaylay Submarine Canyon off the northern coast of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. They start in very shallow waters at the shelf break and reach deeper waters where a gas pipeline is located. The pipeline was displaced by a turbidity current in 2006 and its rock berm damaged by another 10 years later. Here we propose that they are triggered near the mouth of the Malaylay and Baco rivers by direct sediment resuspension in the shallow shelf and transport to the canyon heads by typhoon-induced waves and currents. We show these rivers are unlikely to generate hyperpycnal flows and trigger turbidity currents by themselves. Characteristic signatures of turbidity currents, in the form of bed shear stress obtained by numerical simulations, match observed erosion/deposition and rock berm damage patterns recorded by repeat bathymetric surveys before and after typhoon Nock-ten in December 2016. Our analysis predicts a larger turbidity current triggered by typhoon Durian in 2006; and reveals the reason for the lack of any significant turbidity current associated with typhoon Melor in December 2015. Key factors to assess turbidity current initiation are typhoon proximity, strength, and synchronicity of typhoon induced waves and currents. Using data from a 66-year hindcast we estimate a ~8-year return period of typhoons with capacity to trigger large turbidity currents

    1079-102 Correlation between norepinephrine and epinephrine myocardial spillover and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in conventional versus off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery

    Background: Complete revascularization obtained by coronary artery bypass surgery does not prevent long term left ventricular remodeling and heart failure development. Periprocedural events linked to different surgical techniques, such as cardiopulmonary bypass with cardioplegic arrest (CABG) versus off-pump procedures may trigger an irreversible microvascular dysfunction or myocytes necrosis and apoptosis. Methods: To test this hypothesis we measured norepinephrine and epinephrine coronary sinus and aortic spillover before and after surgery, simultaneously with Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) measurements in 30 patients randomized to CABG (n=15), or off-pump (n=15) coronary surgery. Plasma catecholamines were assessed by high performance liquid chromatography and TNF-alpha by ELISA. Results: Norepinephrine and epinephrine spillover was similar in the two groups before surgery, being 1.38\ub10.62 and 1.08\ub10.45, respectively. After surgery norepinephrine spillover was 1.43\ub10.56, 0.72\ub10.49 in CABG and off-pump, respectively (P<0.05 CABG versus off-pump, means \ub1SD ). Epinephrine spillover was 1.27\ub10.16 and 0.65\ub10.15 respectively (P<0.05, CABG versus off-pump). TNF-alpha significantly increased only in CABG patients being 22.17\ub16.79 and 35.4\ub15.98, pg/mL, before and after surgery (P<0.05), respectively. After surgery norepinephrine spillover correlated with TNF-alpha levels (P=0.01, R=0.553). Conclusions: Patients undergoing off-pump interventions showed significantly lower catecholamines spillover as compared to CABG, suggesting that the off-pump technique may result less invasive, not only for a lower local and whole body inflammatory response but also for a lower sympathetic drive. For the first time in humans we have detected an increase in epinephrine-spillover after cardiac surgery. Further studies are necessary to evaluate if the short-term advantages observed after off-pump coronary surgery translate into a long-term attenuation of left ventricular remodeling and in the prevention of heart failure progression

    A Conditional Moment Closure Study of Chemical Reaction Source Terms in SCCI Combustion

    The objective of this study is to evaluate conditional moment closure (CMC) approaches to model chemical reaction rates in compositionally stratified, autoigniting mixtures, in thermochemical conditions relevant to stratified charge compression ignition (SCCI) engines. First-order closure, second-order closure and double conditioning are evaluated and contrasted as options in comparison to a series of direct numerical simulations (DNSs). The two-dimensional (2D) DNS cases simulate ignitions in SCCI-like thermochemical conditions with compositionally stratified n-heptane/air mixtures in a constant volume. The cases feature two different levels of stratification with three mean temperatures in the negative-temperature coefficient (NTC) regime of ignition delay times. The first-order closure approach for reaction rates is first assessed using hybrid DNS-CMC a posteriori tests when implemented in an open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package known as OpenFOAMⓇ. The hybrid DNS-CMC a posteriori tests are not a full CMC but a DNS-CMC hybrid in that they compute the scalar and velocity fields at the DNS resolution, thus isolating the first-order reaction rate closure model as the main source of modelling error (as opposed to turbulence model, scalar probability density function model, and scalar dissipation rate model). The hybrid DNS-CMC a posteriori test reveals an excellent agreement between the model and DNS for the cases with low levels of stratification, whereas deviations from the DNS are observed in cases which exhibit high level of stratifications. The a priori analysis reveals that the reason for disagreement is failure of the first-order closure hypothesis in the model due to the high level of conditional fluctuations. Second-order and double conditioning approaches are then evaluated in a priori tests to determine the most promising path forwards in addressing higher levels of stratification. The a priori tests use the DNS data to compute the model terms, thus directly evaluating the model assumptions. It is shown that in the cases with a high level of stratification, even the second-order estimation of the reaction rate source term cannot provide a reasonably accurate closure. Double conditioning using mixture-fraction and sensible enthalpy, however, provides an accurate first-order closure to the reaction rate source term

    Impact of hormonal treatment duration in combination with radiotherapy for locally advanced prostate cancer: Meta-analysis of randomized trials

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hormone therapy plus radiotherapy significantly decreases recurrences and mortality of patients affected by locally advanced prostate cancer. In order to determine if difference exists according to the hormonal treatment duration, a literature-based meta-analysis was performed.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Relative risks (RR) were derived through a random-effect model. Differences in primary (biochemical failure, BF; cancer-specific survival, CSS), and secondary outcomes (overall survival, OS; local or distant recurrence, LR/DM) were explored. Absolute differences (AD) and the number needed to treat (NNT) were calculated. Heterogeneity, a meta-regression for clinic-pathological predictors and a correlation test for surrogates were conducted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Five trials (3,424 patients) were included. Patient population ranged from 267 to 1,521 patients. The longer hormonal treatment significantly improves BF (with significant heterogeneity) with an absolute benefit of 10.1%, and a non significant trend in CSS. With regard to secondary end-points, the longer hormonal treatment significantly decrease both the LR and the DM with an absolute difference of 11.7% and 11.5%. Any significant difference in OS was observed. None of the three identified clinico-pathological predictors (median PSA, range 9.5-20.35, Gleason score 7-10, 27-55% patients/trial, and T3-4, 13-77% patients/trial), did significantly affect outcomes. At the meta-regression analysis a significant correlation between the overall treatment benefit in BF, CSS, OS, LR and DM, and the length of the treatment was found (p≤0.03).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although with significant heterogeneity (reflecting different patient' risk stratifications), a longer hormonal treatment duration significantly decreases biochemical, local and distant recurrences, with a trend for longer cancer specific survival.</p

    Elevated serum procollagen type III peptide in splanchnic and peripheral circulation of patients with inflammatory bowel disease submitted to surgery

    BACKGROUND: In the hypothesis that the increased collagen metabolism in the intestinal wall of patients affected by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is reflected in the systemic circulation, we aimed the study to evaluate serum level of procollagen III peptide (PIIIP) in peripheral and splanchnic circulation by a commercial radioimmunoassay of patients with different histories of disease. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients, 17 with Crohn and 10 with ulcerative colitis submitted to surgery were studied. Blood samples were obtained before surgery from a peripheral vein and during surgery from the mesenteric vein draining the affected intestinal segment. Fifteen healthy age and sex matched subjects were studied to determine normal range for peripheral PIIIP. RESULTS: In IBD patients peripheral PIIIP level was significantly higher if compared with controls (5.0 ± 1.9 vs 2.7 ± 0.7 μg/l; p = 0.0001); splanchnic PIIIP level was 5.5 ± 2.6 μg/l showing a positive gradient between splanchnic and peripheral concentrations of PIIIP. No significant differences between groups nor correlations with patients' age and duration of disease were found. CONCLUSIONS: We provide evidence that the increased local collagen metabolism in active IBD is reflected also in the systemic circulation irrespective of the history of the disease, suggesting that PIIIP should be considered more appropiately as a marker of the activity phases of IBD

    Gender Differences in Sleep Deprivation Effects on Risk and Inequality Aversion: Evidence from an Economic Experiment

    Excessive working hours—even at night—are becoming increasingly common in our modern 24/7 society. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is particularly vulnerable to the effects of sleep loss and, consequently, the specific behaviors subserved by the functional integrity of the PFC, such as risk-taking and pro-social behavior, may be affected significantly. This paper seeks to assess the effects of one night of sleep deprivation on subjects’ risk and social preferences, which are probably the most explored behavioral domains in the tradition of Experimental Economics. This novel cross-over study employs thirty-two university students (gender-balanced) participating to 2 counterbalanced laboratory sessions in which they perform standard risk and social preference elicitation protocols. One session was after one night of undisturbed sleep at home, and the other was after one night of sleep deprivation in the laboratory. Sleep deprivation causes increased sleepiness and decreased alertness in all subjects. After sleep loss males make riskier decisions compared to the rested condition, while females do the opposite. Females likewise show decreased inequity aversion after sleep deprivation. As for the relationship between cognitive ability and economic decisions, sleep deprived individuals with higher cognitive reflection show lower risk aversion and more altruistic behavior. These results show that one night of sleep deprivation alters economic behavior in a gender-sensitive way.
