    Rotational properties of two-component Bose gases in the lowest Landau level

    We study the rotational (yrast) spectra of dilute two-component atomic Bose gases in the low angular momentum regime, assuming equal interspecies and intraspecies interaction. Our analysis employs the composite fermion (CF) approach including a pseudospin degree of freedom. While the CF approach is not {\it a priori} expected to work well in this angular momentum regime, we show that composite fermion diagonalization gives remarkably accurate approximations to low energy states in the spectra. For angular momenta 0<L<M0 < L < M (where NN and MM denote the numbers of particles of the two species, and M≥NM \geq N), we find that the CF states span the full Hilbert space and provide a convenient set of basis states which, by construction, are eigenstates of the symmetries of the Hamiltonian. Within this CF basis, we identify a subset of the basis states with the lowest Λ\Lambda-level kinetic energy. Diagonalization within this significally smaller subspace constitutes a major computational simplification and provides very close approximations to ground states and a number of low-lying states within each pseudospin and angular momentum channel

    Majoron emission in muon and tau decays revisited

    In models where the breaking of lepton number is spontaneous a massless Goldstone boson, the Majoron (JJ), appears. We calculate the theoretically allowed range for the branching ratios of Majoron emitting charged lepton decays, such as Br(μ→eJ\mu \to e J) and Br(μ→eJγ\mu \to e J \gamma), in a supersymmetric model with spontaneous breaking of R-parity. Br(μ→eJ\mu\to eJ) is maximal in the same region of parameter space for which the lightest neutralino decays mainly invisibly. A measurement of Br(μ→eJ\mu\to eJ) thus potentially provides information on R-parity violation complementary to accelerator searches. We also briefly discuss existing bounds and prospects for future improvements on the Majoron coupling to charged leptons.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    AVIRIS data characteristics and their effects on spectral discrimination of rocks exposed in the Drum Mountains, Utah: Results of a preliminary study

    Airborne Visible and Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) data collected over a geologically diverse field site and over a nearby calibration site were analyzed and interpreted in efforts to document radiometric and geometric characteristics of AVIRIS, quantify and correct for detrimental sensor phenomena, and evaluate the utility of AVIRIS data for discriminating rock types and identifying their constituent mineralogy. AVIRIS data acquired for these studies exhibit a variety of detrimental artifacts and have lower signal-to-noise ratios than expected in the longer wavelength bands. Artifacts are both inherent in the image data and introduced during ground processing, but most may be corrected by appropriate processing techniques. Poor signal-to-noise characteristics of this AVIRIS data set limited the usefulness of the data for lithologic discrimination and mineral identification. Various data calibration techniques, based on field-acquired spectral measurements, were applied to the AVIRIS data. Major absorption features of hydroxyl-bearing minerals were resolved in the spectra of the calibrated AVIRIS data, and the presence of hydroxyl-bearing minerals at the corresponding ground locations was confirmed by field data

    We demonstrate that the sequence of distorted commensurate phases observed in tilted chiral smectics is explained by the gain in electrostatic energy due to the lock-in of the unit cell to a number of layers which is the integer closest to the ratio pitch over thickness of the subjacent Sm-Cα∗^*_\alpha phase. We also explain the sign change of the helicity in the middle of the sequence by a balance between two twist sources one intrinsic and another due to the distortion of the Sm-Cα∗^*_\alpha

    The computer program discussed is intended for the graphical presentation of a general dependent variable X that is a function of two independent variables, U and V. The required input to the program is the variation of the dependent variable with one of the independent variables for various fixed values of the other. The computer program is named CRP, and the output is provided by the SD 4060 plotter. Program CRP is an extremely flexible program that offers the user a wide variety of options. The dependent variable may be presented in either a linear or a logarithmic manner. Automatic centering of the plot is provided in the ordinate direction, and the abscissa is scaled automatically for a logarithmic plot. A description of the carpet plot technique is given along with the coordinates system used in the program. Various aspects of the program logic are discussed and detailed documentation of the data card format is presented
