    Homogenization induced by chaotic mixing and diffusion in an oscillatory chemical reaction

    A model for an imperfectly mixed batch reactor with the chlorine dioxide-iodine-malonic acid (CDIMA) reaction, with the mixing being modelled by chaotic advection, is considered. The reactor is assumed to be operating in oscillatory mode and the way in which an initial spatial perturbation becomes homogenized is examined. When the kinetics are such that the only stable homogeneous state is oscillatory then the perturbation is always entrained into these oscillations. The rate at which this occurs is relatively insensitive to the chemical effects, measured by the Damkohler number, and is comparable to the rate of homogenization of a passive contaminant. When both steady and oscillatory states are stable, spatially homogeneous states, two possibilities can occur. For the smaller Damkohler numbers, a localized perturbation at the steady state is homogenized within the background oscillations. For larger Damkohler numbers, regions of both oscillatory and steady behavior can co-exist for relatively long times before the system collapses to having the steady state everywhere.     Orthoclinostatic test as one of the methods for evaluating the human functional state

    The possible use of different methods to evaluate the autonomic regulation in hygienic studies were examined. The simplest and most objective tests were selected. It is shown that the use of the optimized standards not only makes it possible to detect earlier unfavorables shifts, but also permits a quantitative characterization of the degree of impairment in the state of the organism. Precise interpretation of the observed shifts is possible. Results indicate that the standards can serve as one of the criteria for evaluating the state and can be widely used in hygienic practice

Copyright @ 2011 Springer-Verlag.We study a system of reaction–diffusion–convection equations which combine a reaction–diffusion system with Schnakenberg kinetics and the convective flow equations. It serves as a simple model for flow-distributed pattern formation. We show how the choice of boundary conditions and the size of the flow influence the positions of the emerging spiky patterns and give conditions when they are shifted to the right or to the left. Further, we analyze the shape and prove the stability of the spikes. This paper is the first providing a rigorous analysis of spiky patterns for reaction-diffusion systems coupled with convective flow. The importance of these results for biological applications, in particular the formation of left–right asymmetry in the mouse, is indicated.RGC of Hong Kon

    The management of transmedia production in an era of media and digital convergence

This thesis analyzes the management needs of transmedia campaigns in the current and near future markets and the requirements for brand management. Using Henry Jenkins' work on transmedia narratives and storytelling, participatory culture, and a strong foundation in the design of narratives provided by the Comparative Media Studies program at MIT, I add a business perspective on risk and brand management to counteract the rising costs of production and marketing. I begin with a survey of the effects of media and digital convergence on the creative aspects of entertainment, then the attributes of the transmedia narrative are addressed including the historical development of multimedia and intellectual property rights management, and concluding with a fresh look at the content of the entertainment industry as an information product. In the final section, I propose means of managing a transmedia production and approaches to marketing using social networks, product placement, and lifecycle management in the era of convergence as well as the implications on the existing talent system.by Andrew D.     The Speed of Fronts of the Reaction Diffusion Equation

    We study the speed of propagation of fronts for the scalar reaction-diffusion equation ut=uxx+f(u)u_t = u_{xx} + f(u)\, with f(0)=f(1)=0f(0) = f(1) = 0. We give a new integral variational principle for the speed of the fronts joining the state u=1u=1 to u=0u=0. No assumptions are made on the reaction term f(u)f(u) other than those needed to guarantee the existence of the front. Therefore our results apply to the classical case f>0f > 0 in (0,1)(0,1), to the bistable case and to cases in which ff has more than one internal zero in (0,1)(0,1).Comment: 7 pages Revtex, 1 figure not include

    Circadian rhythm of cortisol and neighborhood characteristics in a population-based sample: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

    Although stress is often hypothesized to contribute to the effects of neighborhoods on health, very few studies have investigated associations of neighborhood characteristics with stress biomarkers. This study helps address the gap in the literature by examining whether neighborhood characteristics are associated with cortisol profiles. Analyses were based on data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Stress study which collected multiple measures of salivary cortisol over three days on a population based sample of approximately 800 adults. Multilevel models with splines were used to examine associations of cortisol with neighborhood poverty, violence, disorder, and social cohesion. Neighborhood violence was significantly associated with lower cortisol values at wakeup and with a slower decline in cortisol over the earlier part of the day, after sociodemographic controls. Associations were weaker and less consistent for neighborhood poverty, social cohesion, and disorder. Results revealed suggestive, though limited, evidence linking neighborhood contexts to cortisol circadian rhythms

    Exploring predictive performance: A reanalysis of the geospace model transition challenge

    The Pulkkinen et al. (2013) study evaluated the ability of five different geospace models to predict surface dB/dt as a function of upstream solar drivers. This was an important step in the assessment of research models for predicting and ultimately preventing the damaging effects of geomagnetically induced currents. Many questions remain concerning the capabilities of these models. This study presents a reanalysis of the Pulkkinen et al. (2013) results in an attempt to better understand the models’ performance. The range of validity of the models is determined by examining the conditions corresponding to the empirical input data. It is found that the empirical conductance models on which global magnetohydrodynamic models rely are frequently used outside the limits of their input data. The prediction error for the models is sorted as a function of solar driving and geomagnetic activity. It is found that all models show a bias toward underprediction, especially during active times.
