INFLUENCE OF LINEAR ALKYLBENZENE SULFONATE (LAS) AS ORGANIC COSOLVENT ON LEACHING BEHAVIOR OF PCDD/FS FROM FLY-ASH AND SOIL
The leaching of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) was measured in soil and standard fly ash column eluted with pure water and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS)- water. The data obtained were used to evaluate the leachability of PCDD/Fs from waste dump like incineration residual slag and fly ash deposition. The leaching rate was shown to be increased significantly by using LAS water. The leachate contents of PCDD/Fs were above their known water solubility. Concentration of PCDD/Fs in the leachates as well as the relative leaching (calculated on the fly ash content) increased with increasing chlorinating degree and decreasing water solubility. LAS above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) probably enhances PCDD/Fs solubility
Improved performance of the LHCb Outer Tracker in LHC Run 2
The LHCb Outer Tracker is a gaseous detector covering an area of with 12 double layers of straw tubes. The performance of the detector is
presented based on data of the LHC Run 2 running period from 2015 and 2016.
Occupancies and operational experience for data collected in , pPb and
PbPb collisions are described. An updated study of the ageing effects is
presented showing no signs of gain deterioration or other radiation damage
effects. In addition several improvements with respect to LHC Run 1 data taking
are introduced. A novel real-time calibration of the time-alignment of the
detector and the alignment of the single monolayers composing detector modules
are presented, improving the drift-time and position resolution of the detector
by 20\%. Finally, a potential use of the improved resolution for the timing of
charged tracks is described, showing the possibility to identify low-momentum

In vitro Efficacy of a Novel Guanosine-Analog Phosphonate
Actinic keratosis, a frequent carcinoma in situ of non-melanoma skin cancer
(NMSC), can transform into life-threatening cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
Current treatment is limited due to low complete clearance rates and asks for
novel therapeutic concepts; the novel purine nucleotide analogue OxBu may be
an option. In order to enhance skin penetration, solid lipid nanoparticles
(SLN, 136-156 nm) were produced with an OxBu entrapment efficiency of 96.5 ±
0.1%. For improved preclinical evaluation, we combined tissue engineering with
clinically used keratin-18 quantification. Three doses of 10-3 mol/l OxBu,
dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline as well as loaded to SLN, were
effective on reconstructed NMSC. Tumour response and apoptosis induction were
evaluated by an increase in caspase-cleaved fragment of keratin-18, caspase-7
activation as well as by reduced expression of matrix metallopeptidase-2 and
Ki-67. OxBu efficacy was superior to equimolar 5-fluorouracil solution, and
thus the drug should be subjected to the next step in preclinical evaluation

ackground: We present the results obtained from the largest series of in vitro diagnostic tests ever reported in patients with clinically validated
hypersensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)/nonsteroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs (NSAID) compared with various categories of controls tolerating
ASA/NSAIDs. This multicenter study, which was performed within the framework of the European Network for Drug Allergy (ENDA) group, showed
that the basophil activation test (BAT), particularly when used with the 3 NSAIDs aspirin (ASA), diclofenac (DIC), and naproxen (NAP), allows
us to confi rm the diagnosis of NSAID hypersensitivity syndrome. The results of the cellular allergen stimulation test (CAST) frequently correlate
with those of the BAT, although not always. An unexpected fi nding was that basophil activation by NSAIDs is not an all-or-nothing phenomenon
restricted to clinically hypersensitive patients, but that it also occurs in a dose-related manner in some NSAID-tolerant control individuals. Therefore,
NSAID hypersensitivity appears as a shift in the normal pharmacological response to NSAIDs. These fi ndings allow us to formulate a new rational
hypothesis about the mechanism of NSAID hypersensitivity syndrome, a mechanism that most authors continue to describe as “unknown.”
Methods: We enrolled 152 patients with a history of hypersensitivity to NSAIDs and 136 control participants in 11 different centers between
spring 2003 and spring 2006. Flowcytometric BAT was performed.
Results: The most noteworthy results of our study were that 57% of 140 patients presented very clear-cut positive BAT results to multiple
NSAIDs, and 16% were entirely negative. In about 27% of cases, positive results were obtained with 1 or 2 concentrations of a single
NSAID. There is clearly a correlation between the results of BAT and CAST.
Conclusions: BAT seems particularly indicated in patients with a clinical history of NSAID intolerance, and in whom a provocation test is not
advisable for ethical, clinical, or other reasons
Formation of nanoscale ferromagnetic MnAs crystallites in low-temperature grown GaAs
3 páginas, 3 figuras, 1 tabla.We report the formation of nanosize ferromagnetic MnAs crystallites imbedded in low-temperature grown GaAs using Mn+ ion implantation and subsequent annealing. The structural and magnetic properties of the crystallites have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, electron beam induced x-ray fluorescence, and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. After an optimized thermal annealing at 750 °C, MnAs crystallites of 50 nm in size are formed. These nanomagnets show room temperature ferromagnetism.This work has been supported by QUEST, an
