A bibliometric analysis of venture capital research
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present the evolution of academic research in venture capital (VC) research between 1990 and 2014. Design/methodology/approach: The study analyzes the most influential journals in VC research by analyzing papers which were published on the Web of Science database. Findings: Results show a steady increasing rate of VC research during the past 25 years. The paper reports the 40 academic journals that permanently publish articles about VC research. Originality/value: The main contribution of this work is to develop a general overview of the leading journals in VC research which leads to the development of a future research agenda for bibliometric analysis such as the review of the most productive and influential authors universities and countries in VC research.Propósito: El propósito de este estudio es presentar la evolución de la investigación académica en la investigación de capital de riesgo (VC) entre 1990 y 2014. Diseño / metodología / enfoque: El estudio analiza las revistas más influyentes en la investigación de VC mediante el análisis de artículos que se publicaron en la base de datos Web of Science. Hallazgos: Los resultados muestran una tasa de aumento constante de la investigación de la CV en los últimos 25 años. El artículo informa sobre las 40 revistas académicas que publican permanentemente artículos sobre la investigación de VC. Event-Based control of depth of hypnosis in anesthesia
Background and Objective: In this paper, we propose the use of an event-based control strategy for the closed-loop control of the depth of hypnosis in anesthesia by using propofol administration and the bispectral index as a controlled variable. Methods: A new event generator with high noise-filtering properties is employed in addition to a PIDPlus controller. The tuning of the parameters is performed off-line by using genetic algorithms by considering a given data set of patients. Results: The effectiveness and robustness of the method is verified in simulation by implementing a Monte Carlo method to address the intra-patient and inter-patient variability. A comparison with a standard PID control structure shows that the event-based control system achieves a reduction of the total variation of the manipulated variable of 93% in the induction phase and of 95% in the maintenance phase. Conclusions: The use of event based automatic control in anesthesia yields a fast induction phase with bounded overshoot and an acceptable disturbance rejection. Ultrastructural analysis of rehydrated human donor corneas after air-drying and dissection by femtosecond laser
Purpose: To evaluate the efficiency of femtosecond laser (FSL) incision of rehydrated human donor corneas after air-drying and its effects on corneal structure. Methods: We compared the rehydrated and fresh-preserved corneas by microscopy following Victus-Tecnolas FSL treatment for straight-edge anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK). The corneas were dehydrated at room temperature under a laminar-flow hood. Results: To obtain the horizontal cut in rehydrated corneas, we increased the FSL pulse energy to 1.2 μJ from 0.80 μJ applied for the fresh corneas and obtained a clear-cut separation of the lamellar lenticule cap from the corneal bed. Light microscopy showed regular arrangement of stromal collagen lamellae, with spaces in between the fibers in the corneal stroma in the fresh and the rehydrated corneas, but the uppermost epithelial layers in the rehydrated corneas were lost. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed no signs of thermal or mechanical damage to the corneal structure. The epithelial basal membrane and Bowman's layer maintained their integrity. The epithelial basal layer and cells were separated by large spaces due to junction alteration in the rehydrated corneas. There were gaps between the lamellar layers in the stroma, especially in the rehydrated corneas. Keratocytes displayed normal structure in the fresh corneas but were devoid of microorganules in the rehydrated corneas. Minor irregularities were observed in the vertical incision and the horizontal stroma appeared smooth on scanning electron microscopy. Conclusion: The corneal stroma of rehydrated corneas maintained morphology and integrity, while corneal cellular components were generally altered. When corneas are intended for FSL-assisted ALK, effective stromal bed incision is best achieved at a laser power higher than that currently adopted for fresh corneas
Artificial dermal substitutes for tissue regeneration: comparison of the clinical outcomes and histological findings of two templates
Objective: Artificial dermal substitutes (DSs) are fundamental in physiological wound healing to ensure consistent and enduring wound closure and provide a suitable scaffold to repair tissue. We compared the clinical and histological features of two DSs, Pelnac and Integra, in the treatment of traumatic and iatrogenic skin defects. Methods: This prospective observational study involved 71 randomly selected patients from our hospital. Wound healing was analyzed using the Wound Surface Area Assessment, the Vancouver Scar Scale, and a visual analog scale. Histological and immunohistochemical evaluations were also performed. Results: At 2 weeks, greater regeneration with respect to proliferation of the epidermis and renewal of the dermis was observed with Pelnac than with Integra. At 4 weeks, the dermis had regenerated with both DSs. Both templates induced renewed collagen and revascularization. Differences in the Vancouver Scar Scale score were statistically significant at 4 weeks and 1 year. Pelnac produced a significant increase in contraction at 2 weeks with increasing effectiveness at 4 weeks. Integra produced a higher percentage reduction in the wound surface area and a shorter healing time than Pelnac for wounds >1.5 cm deep. Conclusion: Our observational data indicate that both DSs are effective and applicable in different clinical contexts
Mesenchymal/Stromal Gene Expression Signature Relates to Basal-Like Breast Cancers, Identifies Bone Metastasis and Predicts Resistance to Therapies
BACKGROUND:
Mounting clinical and experimental evidence suggests that the shift of carcinomas towards a mesenchymal phenotype is a common paradigm for both resistance to therapy and tumor recurrence. However, the mesenchymalization of carcinomas has not yet entered clinical practice as a crucial diagnostic paradigm.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:
By integrating in silico and in vitro studies with our epithelial and mesenchymal tumor models, we compare herein crucial molecular pathways of previously described carcinoma-derived mesenchymal tumor cells (A17) with that of both carcinomas and other mesenchymal phenotypes, such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), breast stroma, and various types of sarcomas. We identified three mesenchymal/stromal-signatures which A17 cells shares with MSCs and breast stroma. By using a recently developed computational approach with publicly available microarray data, we show that these signatures: 1) significantly relates to basal-like breast cancer subtypes; 2) significantly relates to bone metastasis; 3) are up-regulated after hormonal treatment; 4) predict resistance to neoadjuvant therapies.
CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:
Our results demonstrate that mesenchymalization is an intrinsic property of the most aggressive tumors and it relates to therapy resistance as well as bone metastasis
Multicenter randomized, double-blind controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of laser therapy for the treatment of severe oral mucositis induced by chemotherapy in children: laMPO RCT
Objectives: To demonstrate the efficacy of laser photobiomodulation (PBM) compared to that of placebo on severe oral mucositis (OM) in pediatric oncology patients. The primary objective was the reduction of OM grade (World Health Organization [WHO] scale) 7 days after starting PBM. Secondary objectives were reduction of pain, analgesic consumption, and incidence of side effects. Methods: One hundred and one children with WHO grade\ua0>\ua02 chemotherapy-induced OM were enrolled in eight Italian hospitals. Patients were randomized to either PBM or sham treatment for four consecutive days (days +1 to +4). On days +4, +7, and +11, OM grade, pain (following a 0\u201310 numeric pain rating scale, NRS) and need for analgesics were evaluated by an operator blinded to treatment. Results: Fifty-one patients were allocated to the PBM group, and 50 were allocated to the sham group. In total, 93.7% of PBM patients and 72% of sham patients had OM grade\ua0<\ua03 WHO on day +7 (P\ua0=\ua00.01). A significant reduction of pain was registered on day +7 in the PBM versus sham group (NRS 1 [0\u20133] vs. 2.5 [1\u20135], P\ua0<\ua00.006). Reduced use of analgesics was reported in the PBM group, although it was not statistically significant. No significant adverse events attributable to treatment were recorded. Conclusions: PBM is a safe, feasible, and effective treatment for children affected by chemotherapy-induced OM, as it accelerates mucosal recovery and reduces pain
Inhibition of tyrosine kinase receptors by SU6668 promotes abnormal stromal development at the periphery of carcinomas
Dynamic contrast-enhanced (albumin-Gd-DTPA) magnetic resonance imaging, performed during 2 weeks of daily administration of an inhibitor of tyrosine kinase receptors (SU6668) in an HT-29 colon carcinoma model, revealed the onset of a hyper-enhancing rim, not observed in untreated tumours. To account for tissue heterogeneity in the quantitative analysis, we segmented tumours into three subunits automatically identified by cluster analysis of the enhancement curves using a k-means algorithm. Transendothelial permeability (Kps) and fractional plasma volume (fPV) were calculated in each subunit. An avascular and necrotic region, an intermediate zone and a well-vascularised periphery were reliably identified. During untreated tumour growth, the identified sub-regions did not substantially change their enhancement pattern. Treatment with SU6668 induced major changes at tumour periphery where a significant increase of Kps and fPV was observed with respect to control tumours. Histology revealed a sub-capsular layer composed of hyper-dense viable tumour cells in the periphery of untreated tumours. The rim of viable neoplastic cells was reduced in treated tumours, and replaced by loose connective tissue characterised by numerous vessels, which explains the observed hyper-enhancement. The present data show a peripheral abnormal development of cancer-associated stroma, indicative of an adaptive response to anti-angiogenic treatment
Expression of taste receptors in Solitary Chemosensory Cells of rodent airways
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chemical irritation of airway mucosa elicits a variety of reflex responses such as coughing, apnea, and laryngeal closure. Inhaled irritants can activate either chemosensitive free nerve endings, laryngeal taste buds or solitary chemosensory cells (SCCs). The SCC population lies in the nasal respiratory epithelium, vomeronasal organ, and larynx, as well as deeper in the airway. The objective of this study is to map the distribution of SCCs within the airways and to determine the elements of the chemosensory transduction cascade expressed in these SCCs.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We utilized a combination of immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques (rtPCR and in situ hybridization) on rats and transgenic mice where the Tas1R3 or TRPM5 promoter drives expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Epithelial SCCs specialized for chemoreception are distributed throughout much of the respiratory tree of rodents. These cells express elements of the taste transduction cascade, including Tas1R and Tas2R receptor molecules, α-gustducin, PLCβ2 and TrpM5. The Tas2R bitter taste receptors are present throughout the entire respiratory tract. In contrast, the Tas1R sweet/umami taste receptors are expressed by numerous SCCs in the nasal cavity, but decrease in prevalence in the trachea, and are absent in the lower airways.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Elements of the taste transduction cascade including taste receptors are expressed by SCCs distributed throughout the airways. In the nasal cavity, SCCs, expressing Tas1R and Tas2R taste receptors, mediate detection of irritants and foreign substances which trigger trigeminally-mediated protective airway reflexes. Lower in the respiratory tract, similar chemosensory cells are not related to the trigeminal nerve but may still trigger local epithelial responses to irritants. In total, SCCs should be considered chemoreceptor cells that help in preventing damage to the respiratory tract caused by inhaled irritants and pathogens.</p
Olfactory and solitary chemosensory cells: two different chemosensory systems in the nasal cavity of the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The nasal cavity of all vertebrates houses multiple chemosensors, either innervated by the Ist (olfactory) or the Vth (trigeminal) cranial nerve. Various types of receptor cells are present, either segregated in different compartments (e.g. in rodents) or mingled in one epithelium (e.g. fish). In addition, solitary chemosensory cells have been reported for several species. Alligators which seek their prey both above and under water have only one nasal compartment. Information about their olfactory epithelium is limited. Since alligators seem to detect both volatile and water-soluble odour cues, I tested whether different sensory cell types are present in the olfactory epithelium.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry were used to examine the sensory epithelium of the nasal cavity of the American alligator. Almost the entire nasal cavity is lined with olfactory (sensory) epithelium. Two types of olfactory sensory neurons are present. Both types bear cilia as well as microvilli at their apical endings and express the typical markers for olfactory neurons. The density of these olfactory neurons varies along the nasal cavity. In addition, solitary chemosensory cells innervated by trigeminal nerve fibres, are intermingled with olfactory sensory neurons. Solitary chemosensory cells express components of the PLC-transduction cascade found in solitary chemosensory cells in rodents.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The nasal cavity of the American alligator contains two different chemosensory systems incorporated in the same sensory epithelium: the olfactory system proper and solitary chemosensory cells. The olfactory system contains two morphological distinct types of ciliated olfactory receptor neurons.</p
