    Teegi: Tangible EEG Interface

    We introduce Teegi, a Tangible ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) Interface that enables novice users to get to know more about something as complex as brain signals, in an easy, en- gaging and informative way. To this end, we have designed a new system based on a unique combination of spatial aug- mented reality, tangible interaction and real-time neurotech- nologies. With Teegi, a user can visualize and analyze his or her own brain activity in real-time, on a tangible character that can be easily manipulated, and with which it is possible to interact. An exploration study has shown that interacting with Teegi seems to be easy, motivating, reliable and infor- mative.     Recent advancement on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei is reported.     LiDAR-only based navigation algorithm for an autonomous agricultural robot

    The purpose of the work presented in this paper is to develop a general and robust approach for autonomous robot navigation inside a crop using LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data. To be as robust as possible, the robot navigation must not need any prior information about the crop (such as the size and width of the rows). The developed approach is based on line extractions from 2D point clouds using a PEARL based method. In this paper, additional filters and refinements of the PEARL algorithm are presented in the context of crop detection. A penalization of outliers, a model elimination step, a new model search and a geometric constraint are proposed to improve the crop detection. The approach has been tested over a simulator and compared with classical PEARL and RANSAC based approaches. It appears that adding those modification improved the crop detection and thus the robot navigation. Those results are presented and discussed in this paper. It can be noticed that even if this paper presents simulated results (to ease the comparison with other algorithms), the approach also has been successfully tested using an actual Oz weeding robot, developed by the French company Naio Technologies

    Disruption of the autoinhibited state primes the E3 ligase parkin for activation and catalysis

    The PARK2 gene is mutated in 50% of autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism (ARJP) cases. It encodes parkin, an E3 ubiquitin ligase of the RBR family. Parkin exists in an autoinhibited state that is activated by phosphorylation of its N‐terminal ubiquitin‐like (Ubl) domain and binding of phosphoubiquitin. We describe the 1.8 Å crystal structure of human parkin in its fully inhibited state and identify the key interfaces to maintain parkin inhibition. We identify the phosphoubiquitin‐binding interface, provide a model for the phosphoubiquitin–parkin complex and show how phosphorylation of the Ubl domain primes parkin for optimal phosphoubiquitin binding. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the addition of phosphoubiquitin leads to displacement of the Ubl domain through loss of structure, unveiling a ubiquitin‐binding site used by the E2~Ub conjugate, thus leading to active parkin. We find the role of the Ubl domain is to prevent parkin activity in the absence of the phosphorylation signals, and propose a model for parkin inhibition, optimization for phosphoubiquitin recruitment, release of inhibition by the Ubl domain and engagement with an E2~Ub conjugate.     Asymmetry Function of Interstellar Scintillations of Pulsars

    A new method for separating intensity variations of a source's radio emission having various physical natures is proposed. The method is based on a joint analysis of the structure function of the intensity variations and the asymmetry function, which is a generalization of the asymmetry coefficient and characterizes the asymmetry of the distribution function of the intensity fluctuations on various scales for the inhomogeneities in the diffractive scintillation pattern. Relationships for the asymmetry function in the cases of a logarithmic normal distribution of the intensity fluctuations and a normal distribution of the field fluctuations are derived. Theoretical relationships and observational data on interstellar scintillations of pulsars (refractive, diffractive, and weak scintillations) are compared. Pulsar scintillations match the behavior expected for a normal distribution of the field fluctuations (diffractive scintillation) or logarithmic normal distribution of the intensity fluctuations (refractive and weak scintillation). Analysis of the asymmetry function is a good test for distinguishing scintillations against the background of variations that have different origins

    The Microchannel X-ray Telescope on Board the SVOM Satellite

    We present the Micro-channel X-ray Telescope (MXT), a new narrow-field (about 1{\deg}) telescope that will be flying on the Sino-French SVOM mission dedicated to Gamma-Ray Burst science, scheduled for launch in 2021. MXT is based on square micro pore optics (MPOs), coupled with a low noise CCD. The optics are based on a "Lobster Eye" design, while the CCD is a focal plane detector similar to the type developed for the seven eROSITA telescopes. MXT is a compact and light (<35 kg) telescope with a 1 m focal length, and it will provide an effective area of about 45 cmsq on axis at 1 keV. The MXT PSF is expected to be better than 4.2 arc min (FWHM) ensuring a localization accuracy of the afterglows of the SVOM GRBs to better than 1 arc min (90\% c.l. with no systematics) provided MXT data are collected within 5 minutes after the trigger. The MXT sensitivity will be adequate to detect the afterglows for almost all the SVOM GRBs as well as to perform observations of non-GRB astrophysical objects.     Yearling Beef Cattle Grazing Diverse Summer Annual Swards

    Utilizing summer annuals is often regarded as “a breakeven proposition at best” due to high establishment costs. This study investigated using botanical diversity to increase forage yield or animal performance to improve the economic feasibility of grazing summer annual forages in western Kentucky, USA. Sorghum-sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor x S. bicolor spp. drummondii)-based treatments included a monoculture, a three-species mixture (two grasses, one legume), and a 12-species mixture (five grasses, four legumes, two brassicas, and one forb). Angus-cross yearling beef calves (329, 366, and 297 kg in 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively) grazed summer annuals in 2017-2019 for an average of 40 days each year without supplementation. Pastures were stocked when forage was approximately 1 m tall and calves were removed when forage was 2-2.5 m tall (seedheads present). In all years, forage dry matter yield was not different between treatments (p \u3e 0.85) and both mixtures were dominated by sorghum-sudangrass. In 2017 (p \u3c 0.03) and 2019 (p \u3c 0.03), calves grazing the 12-species mixture had lower average daily gains (ADG) than the monoculture and 3-species mixture, while there was no difference in 2018 (p \u3e 0.3). Average daily gains were suboptimal for stocker calves in all years (0.75, 0.01, 0.54 kg day-1 in 2017, 2018, and 2019). The extremely low ADG in 2018 was likely a result of stocking pastures late in the season when grasses were at physiological maturity. Additional species increased seed cost but did not contribute significantly to forage production and did not result in increased animal production. Unless greater forage yield or livestock gains are attained, planting mixtures may not provide any economic benefit. However, adjusting seeding rates to favor less dominant species may provide a more accurate representation of species diversity manipulation effects on forage and livestock production
