    Signal recognition particle prevents N-terminal processing of bacterial membrane proteins.

    Bacterial proteins are synthesized with an N-formylated amino-terminal methionine, and N-formylated peptides elicit innate-immunity responses against bacterial infections. However, the source of these formylated peptides is not clear, as most bacterial proteins are co-translationally deformylated by peptide deformylase. Here we develop a deformylation assay with translating ribosomes as substrates, to show that the binding of the signal recognition particle (SRP) to signal sequences in nascent proteins on the ribosome prevents deformylation, whereas deformylation of nascent proteins without signal sequence is not affected. Deformylation and its inhibition by SRP are not influenced by trigger factor, a chaperone that interacts with nascent chains on the ribosome. We propose that bacterial inner-membrane proteins, in particular those with N-out topology, can retain their N-terminal formyl group during cotranslational membrane insertion and supply formylated peptides during bacterial infections

    The effects of room design on computer-supported collaborative learning in a multi-touch classroom.

    While research indicates that technology can be useful for supporting learning and collaboration, there is still relatively little uptake or widespread implementation of these technologies in classrooms. In this paper, we explore one aspect of the development of a multi-touch classroom, looking at two different designs of the classroom environment to explore how classroom layout may influence group interaction and learning. Three classes of students working in groups of four were taught in the traditional forward-facing room condition, while three classes worked in a centered room condition. Our results indicate that while the outcomes on tasks were similar across conditions, groups engaged in more talk (but not more off-task talk) in a centered room layout, than in a traditional forward-facing room. These results suggest that the use of technology in the classroom may be influenced by the location of the technology, both in terms of the learning outcomes and the interaction behaviors of students. The findings highlight the importance of considering the learning environment when designing technology to support learning, and ensuring that integration of technology into formal learning environments is done with attention to how the technology may disrupt, or contribute to, the classroom interaction practices

    Superconducting properties of very high quality NbN thin films grown by high temperature chemical vapor deposition

    Niobium nitride (NbN) is widely used in high-frequency superconducting electronics circuits because it has one of the highest superconducting transition temperatures (TcT_c \sim 16.5 K) and largest gap among conventional superconductors. In its thin-film form, the TcT_c of NbN is very sensitive to growth conditions and it still remains a challenge to grow NbN thin film (below 50 nm) with high TcT_c. Here, we report on the superconducting properties of NbN thin films grown by high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (HTCVD). Transport measurements reveal significantly lower disorder than previously reported, characterized by a Ioffe-Regel (kFk_F\ell) parameter of \sim 14. Accordingly we observe TcT_c \sim 17.06 K (point of 50% of normal state resistance), the highest value reported so far for films of thickness below 50 nm, indicating that HTCVD could be particularly useful for growing high quality NbN thin films

    We introduce Teegi, a Tangible ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) Interface that enables novice users to get to know more about something as complex as brain signals, in an easy, en- gaging and informative way. To this end, we have designed a new system based on a unique combination of spatial aug- mented reality, tangible interaction and real-time neurotech- nologies. With Teegi, a user can visualize and analyze his or her own brain activity in real-time, on a tangible character that can be easily manipulated, and with which it is possible to interact. An exploration study has shown that interacting with Teegi seems to be easy, motivating, reliable and infor- mative.     Dynamic Behavior of a Sensible-heat based Thermal Energy Storage

    AbstractIn this paper, a mathematical model is developed to study the behavior of thermal energy storage (TES) under operation in the particular case of Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage (A CAES). The A CAES consists of storing the available extra electrical energy of the electricity network in a form of compressed air (in a cavern) to discharge it during peak periods. The TES sub-system is used to charge and discharge the corresponding heat of compression, leading to a quasi adiabatic mode and an increase in the overall electricity storage efficiency (roughly from 50 to 70%) compared to diabatic CAES. The mathematical model has been converted into a computer simulation program with all the effective parameters of heat transfer in the storage reservoir. This model used to define a geometry reservoir able of storing a given power and restore it while maintaining a required temperature level at the output of unit. The influence of the input and output parameters on the storage efficiency is studied. The results illustrate the behavior of the storage reservoir under dynamic mode
