Automatic image annotation applied to habitat classification
Habitat classification, the process of mapping a site with its habitats, is a crucial activity for monitoring environmental biodiversity. Phase 1 classification, a 10-class four-tier hierarchical scheme, is the most widely used scheme in the UK. Currently, no automatic approaches have been developed and its classification is carried out exclusively by ecologists. This manual approach using surveyors is laborious, expensive and subjective. To this date, no automatic approach has been developed.
This thesis presents the first automatic system for Phase 1 classification. Our main contribution is an Automatic Image Annotation (AIA) framework for the automatic classification of Phase 1 habitats. This framework combines five elements to annotate unseen photographs: ground-taken geo-referenced photography, low-level visual features, medium-level semantic information, random projections forests and location-based weighted predictions.
Our second contribution are two fully-annotated ground-taken photograph datasets, the first publicly available databases specifically designed for the development of multimedia analysis techniques for ecological applications. Habitat 1K has over 1,000 photographs and 4,000 annotated habitats and Habitat 3K has over 3,000 images and 11,000 annotated habitats. This is the first time ground-taken photographs have been used with such ecological purposes.
Our third contribution is a novel Random Forest-based classifier: Random Projection Forests (RPF). RPFs use Random Projections as a dimensionality reduction mechanism in their split nodes. This new design makes their training and testing phase more efficient than those of the traditional implementation of Random Forests.
Our fourth contribution arises from the limitations that low-level features have when classifying similarly visual classes. Low-level features have been proven to be inadequate for discriminating high-level semantic concepts, such as habitat classes. Currently, only humans posses such high-level knowledge. In order to obtain this knowledge, we create a new type of feature, called medium-level features, which use a Human-In-The-Loop approach to extract crucial semantic information.
Our final contribution is a location-based voting system for RPFs. We benefit from the geographical properties of habitats to weight the predictions from the RPFs according to the geographical distance between unseen test photographs and photographs in the training set.
Results will show that ground-taken photographs are a promising source of information that can be successfully applied to Phase 1 classification. Experiments will demonstrate that our AIA approach outperforms traditional Random Forests in terms of recall and precision. Moreover, both our modifications, the inclusion of medium-level knowledge and a location-based voting system, greatly improve the recall and precision of even the most complex habitats. This makes our complete image-annotation system, to the best of our knowledge, the most accurate automatic alternative to manual habitat classification for the complete categorization of Phase 1 habitats

Vicente Aguilera Cerni, art critic, writer and director of which was and still is one
of the most original museum projects in Spain and probably in Europe found
in the small provincial town of Vilafamés the perfect framework to develop the
project of his life. Thereby establishing a symbiotic relationship between town and museum that would help both conquer a future that Aguilera Cerni, a lover of utopias, was able to discern despite all types of difficulties that would face the project. A committed character and one of the most relevant critical figures in the artistic panorama of the 20th century, the founder of the popular Museum of Contemporary Art of Vilafamés, renamed later as Museum of Contemporary Art, Vicente Aguilera Cerni, found in this beautiful corner of the Plana Alta, the final station in his personal and professional life. A tour through Aguilera Cerni’s life and the place he loved and a reminder of the persons that made it possible: the unlikely probability that is the Vilafamés Museum
Colombian Migrants in Australia: Their Positioning Processes and Identities in Narratives of Lived and Imagined Experience
This thesis examines the positioning processes of forty-four Colombian migrants in Australia that traces their discursive construction of social, national and migrant identities in view of their stories of lived experience before and after their migration. It looks at the socio-historical contours of Australia as an increasingly preferred destination for Colombians, bearing in mind the country’s treatment of its Aboriginal people, its foreign labour force, and its immigrant population. This project offers an overview of the flow of immigrants from Colombia and the features that characterize them as a growing national group in Australia. They could be broadly divided between ‘old’ and ‘new’ migrants, but their wide range of personal stories of mobility and the dimensions that have accompanied their experience here require a further consideration of factors beyond ethnicity and year of arrival. The thesis explores these elements from extant research and official census data combined with details obtained through a preliminary ethnographic approach. Data were collected during 18 months of fieldwork which included an open survey for Colombians in Australia, personal interviews, observation of public events, focus groups, written narratives and further personal communications with participants. This research takes its theoretical base from a combination of standpoint theory, narrative theory, positioning theory, and Dialogical Self Theory (DST) to examine the discursive formation and views of identity that Colombians articulate at different times and in different spaces, be they part of fieldwork or observation of private and community events. Employing these theoretical frameworks, the thesis departs from a perspective that posits both Colombia and Australia as part of the geopolitical Global South, with a given composite of social order practices. The research attends to the key concepts of positioning and positionality to study the reflexivity of participants in their narrative performance. The thesis interrogates the scope of the multiplicity of identities that participants construct and how these are influenced not only by the social and economic conditions they find in the new country but also a number of shared understandings on Colombia’s past and recurrent social practices. This thesis maintains that Colombians in Australia mould their perceptions of citizenship and community in view of what they imagine these values are for Australians. Additionally, the study shows how features like employment mobility and relations with other Colombians effectively leave an imprint on the participants’ perceptions of their own community as fragmented and dispersed. Thus the forming of multiple identity positions or stronger and less volatile ones depend on the individual’s own early experiences as an immigrant, their reasons for leaving Colombia, and their own reasoning over the migration paths they have followed to date. As a result, the narratives examined here reveal how national identities in Colombian territory are intertwined with the participants’ reflections on their own socio-economic, educational and political background constructing at the same time an array of new positions that evoke a multiplicity of migrant identities
Video tape : an old-new instructional aid in the physics laboratory
My objective is to use the video-tape as another medium -- along with overhead projector, textbooks, guides of apprenticeship, pictures, lab equipment and suggestions from the programs and new trends in physics teaching -- being used to supplement our efforts in trying to reach more and more of our students The use of audiovisual media, and generally speaking the use of technology in education, can be constructive or destructive, can e very powerful in developing human beings or robots , can increase the rate of apprenticeship, or can produce an educational catastrophe. However, it will heavily depend on the the professor, on the role that he assigns to himself in the educational process, on the goals and objectives that he foresees for himself and for his students.
As we will see in this work and in the books and papers about educational technology mentioned in the references and in the bibliography, there exists modern apparatus or equipment with multiple uses, some of them very expensive, others with moderate price tags that we can use with an infinite gamut of possibilities. Generally speaking these apparatus are known as multi-media . We can combine and use them as we please to produce all kinds of effects and consequences
