How do we live with chronic disease?: a rights-based approach promoting the wellbeing of children with chronic disease

This paper focuses on the life experiences of children with chronic disease, a group whose invisibility involves particular challenges in their relationship with professionals in important life contexts, such as family, school and hospital. The study includes two complementary phases: i) Phase 1, composed of 15 interviews with parents, education and health professionals and two focus group discussions with children, and children and their mothers; and ii) Phase 2, which included self-report questionnaires administered to parents (n = 152) and children with chronic disease (n = 176). Based on a mixed methodology, this study combines quantitative and qualitative methods assuming that plural approaches allow for a deeper understanding of the life conditions of children with chronic disease and their families. The results reinforce the reproduction of social stereotypes and the tendency to focus on the individual ability to solve problems, which still remain to be circumscribed to the people's chronic disease sphere. Gender Inequalities in the Military Service: A Systematic Literature Review

This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the literature regarding gender inequalities in the military service. In doing so, it discloses challenges and opportunities for women’s integration and finds new avenues for future research. Recent scientific research has evidenced that women still represent a growing minority in most Western militaries. Women’s integration deserves equal opportunities across all branches and levels of responsibility in the military, however, their expansion to ground combat roles is still a challenge to the military and policy-makers. Scholars have also reported about the decision to increase the number of women in combat roles, as it may potentiate adverse experiences, due to closer proximity to men in circumstances with little or no privacy. Conversely, scientific research has shown that more egalitarian women reported significantly less sexual harassment victimization. Furthermore, our insights suggest that it might be fruitful to integrate women in ground combat roles as special forces’ operators, with a view to induce a reduction of marginalization and sexual harassment, by gaining respect in a male-dominant culture. The presented idea should be interpreted with caution and needs to be supported by empirical research; although we are convinced that future research will be revealing and might represent a game-changing situation to women inequalities in the armed forces.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

From Liberal Acceptance to Intolerance: Discourses on Sexual Diversity in Schools by Portuguese Young People

Purpose: This article explores different strands of educational discourse about sexual diversity in Portuguese schools, from the students’ perspectives.Method: The methodological approach consisted in conducting focus groups discussions: 36 with 232 young students (H = 106, M = 126) in 12 public secondary schools.Findings: Students reveal a polyphony of discourses that gravitate between liberal acceptance, conditional acceptance and intolerance.Research implications: Attention is drawn not only to discriminatory processes that question school as a democratic place for LGBT youth, but also to the gap between what is legally decreed and a lack of know-how in the approach to sexual diversity in school

The time course of authenticity and valence perception in nonverbal emotional vocalizations

There is evidence that the recognition of sadness and happiness in nonverbal vocalizations reaches an adult standard before the recognition of anger and fear, and that men and women are equally good at recognizing emotions, regardless of whether male or female speakers produce them. Still, there is no evidence regarding how much time we need to identify the authenticity of vocal emotional expressions, as well as the type of vocalization itself. How much acoustic information do we need to perceive if a vocal expression, such as a laughter, is authentic or voluntary? How long does it take to perceive if its laughter or crying? The present study addresses these questions. The main objective is to determine the time course of authenticity and type of vocalization recognition in laughter and crying sounds. For this purpose, the procedure was done using a gating paradigm and a sample of 395 participants. Results showed that the recognition accuracy of nonverbal vocalizations improves with the increase of the gate duration, and that the identification of the type of vocalization (laughter vs. crying) happens at earlier stages than the identification of their authenticity (authentic vs. voluntary).Há evidências de que o reconhecimento de tristeza e felicidade em vocalizações não verbais atinge um padrão adulto antes do reconhecimento de raiva e medo, e que homens e mulheres são igualmente bons a reconhecer emoções, independentemente de estas emoções serem produzidas por falantes do sexo masculino ou do sexo feminino. Ainda assim, não há evidências de quanto tempo precisamos para identificar a autenticidade das expressões emocionais vocais, bem como o tipo de vocalização em si. De quanta informação acústica precisamos para perceber se uma expressão vocal, tal como um riso ou choro, é autêntica ou voluntária? Quanto tempo se demora a perceber se é riso ou choro? O presente estudo aborda estas questões. O objetivo principal é determinar o tempo de reconhecimento da autenticidade e tipo de vocalização em estímulos de riso e choro. Para tal, foi utilizado um paradigma de gating e uma amostra de 395 participantes. Os resultados mostraram que a precisão do reconhecimento de vocalizações não verbais melhora com o aumento da duração do gate e que a identificação do tipo de vocalização (riso vs. choro) ocorre em fases mais precoces do que a identificação da sua autenticidade (autêntica vs. voluntária)

Promoção da continuidade dos cuidados à pessoa com doença mental grave

Mestrado, Enfermagem de Saúde Mental e Psiquiatria, 2012, Escola Superior de Enfermagem de LisboaPorque a saúde física e a saúde mental são indissociáveis, observa-se na Pessoa com Doença Mental Grave (PDMG) várias vulnerabilidades em termos de saúde física, sendo a mortalidade mais elevada e precoce. A morte relacionada com causas naturais, como as doenças cardiovasculares, sedentarismo, tabagismo, diabetes, são condições com grande prevalência nesta população, muitas vezes associada a estilos de vida não saudáveis. Assim, surge a necessidade de cuidados continuados e integrados que garantam a acessibilidade aos cuidados, para que a PDMG beneficie de uma intervenção contínua dos Serviços de Saúde, tanto ao nível dos cuidados de saúde mental como dos cuidados de saúde primários, sendo que a articulação e comunicação entre os diferentes Serviços constitui uma condição essencial ao processo de reabilitação da pessoa. Assim, foi aplicado o Modelo de Terapeuta de Referência (TR), no sentido de garantir a continuidade longitudinal, em sete clientes da Consulta de Psiquiatria do Hospital de Santa Maria, articulando os cuidados com o Centro de Saúde do Lumiar, no que respeitava à saúde física dos clientes, assegurando a continuidade transversal. Os clientes apresentaram necessidades ao nível ao nível dos cuidados pessoais, das actividades diárias, da saúde física e das drogas. A articulação com o Serviço de Internamento, surge no âmbito de criar canais de comunicação e partilha de informação entre os Serviços, sendo esta uma estratégia de promoção da continuidade dos cuidados. O enfermeiro especialista reúne um conjunto de características, competências, funções, responsabilidade e formação necessárias para ajudar o cliente na modificação dos seus comportamentos de risco e adoptarem estilos de vida saudáveis, o que contribui para a protecção da saúde e prevenção da doença da PDM. Apresenta ainda competências ao nível da gestão e coordenação dos cuidados, no sentido de, facilitar o acesso ao Serviços de Saúde e garantir a continuidade dos cuidados prestados

Despite the advances in understanding the disease and therapeutic options, it remains a leading cause of death and of comorbidities globally. Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), or amylin, is a hormone produced by pancreatic β-cells. It contributes to the maintenance of glucose physiological levels namely by inhibiting insulin and glucagon secretion as well as controlling adiposity and satiation. IAPP is a highly amyloidogenic polypeptide forming intracellular aggregates and amyloid structures that are associated with β-cell death. Data also suggest the relevance of unprocessed IAPP forms as seeding for amyloid buildup. Besides the known consequences of hyperamylinemia in the pancreas, evidence has also pointed out that IAPP has a pathological role in cognitive function. More specifically, IAPP was shown to impair the blood–brain barrier; it was also seen to interact and co-deposit with amyloid beta peptide (Aß), and possibly with Tau, within the brain of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, thereby contributing to diabetes-associated dementia. In fact, it has been suggested that AD results from a metabolic dysfunction in the brain, leading to its proposed designation as type 3 diabetes. Here, we have first provided a brief perspective on the IAPP amyloidogenic process and its role in diabetes and AD. We have then discussed the potential interventions for modulating IAPP proteotoxicity that can be explored for therapeutics. Finally, we have proposed the concept of a “diabetes brain phenotype” hypothesis in AD, which may help design future IAPP-centered drug developmentstrategies against AD.publishersversionpublishe

The Obstacles Women Face in Gaining Access to Special Operations Forces

It includes multiple sources of data collection for corroboration purposes, namely semi-structured inter- views, direct observation and official documents. Although it has been considered a hot-topic in the Portuguese armed forces, and as the Portuguese Republic establishes the legal means to integrate women in all professional areas, reality shows that up to the present days no women have been part of the special operations forces. Pós-Graduação em Higiene e Segurança no TrabalhoO presente trabalho insere-se no âmbito da Unidade Curricular de Projeto Final em Contexto Real de Trabalho, do Mestrado em Segurança e Higiene no Trabalho, ministrado no Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal.Procedeu-se à elaboração de um Plano de Emergência Interno, que pretende definir um conjunto de normas, procedimentos e recomendações que devem ser adotados pelos meios humanos da Biblioteca Municipal de Pinhal Novo em situações de emergência, com o objetivo de assegurar a proteção dos colaboradores e dos utentes deste estabelecimento.Esta Biblioteca encontra-se dividida em diferentes sectores, com duas salas de leitura e uma de audiovisual, uma cafetaria, os serviços internos e o auditório. Neste estabelecimento foram identificados os seguintes fatores de risco: incêndio, explosão, inundação interna ou através de cheias, sismo, ameaça de bomba, intrusão e furto, acidente pessoal/acidente rodoviário, distúrbio/violência e as festas populares do Pinhal Novo. Destes riscos, foram identificados os que têm maior nível de gravidade e as suas consequências.Foram descritos os meios de intervenção existentes, o sistema de iluminação de emergência e os meios de detecção de alarme e alerta. Foi proposta a organização de segurança dos recursos humanos para atuação em caso de emergência, e os planos de atuação, de evacuação e as instruções de emergência. Por fim, foi presentado um subcapítulo sobre os exercícios de simulacro e de recomendações gerais sobre aspetos a melhorar no edifício em questões de segurança.Conclui-se que o edifício cumpre as obrigatoriedades legais exigidas, assegurando as condições mínimas de segurança aos seus colaboradores e utentes, e que após a elaboração deste trabalho é fundamental a sua implementação pelas entidades camarárias responsáveis, assim como o acréscimo de algumas informações importantes
