Evaluation of performance impairment by spacecraft contaminants
The environmental contaminants (isolated as off-gases in Skylab and Apollo missions) were evaluated. Specifically, six contaminants were evaluated for their effects on the behavior of juvenile baboons. The concentrations of contaminants were determined through preliminary range-finding studies with laboratory rats. The contaminants evaluated were acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), trichloroethylene (TCE), heptane and Freon 21. When the studies of the individual gases were completed, the baboons were also exposed to a mixture of MEK and TCE. The data obtained revealed alterations in the behavior of baboons exposed to relatively low levels of the contaminants. These findings were presented at the First International Symposium on Voluntary Inhalation of Industrial Solvents in Mexico City, June 21-24, 1976. A preprint of the proceedings is included
A Lloyd-model generalization: Conductance fluctuations in one-dimensional disordered systems
We perform a detailed numerical study of the conductance through
one-dimensional (1D) tight-binding wires with on-site disorder. The random
configurations of the on-site energies of the tight-binding
Hamiltonian are characterized by long-tailed distributions: For large
, with . Our
model serves as a generalization of 1D Lloyd's model, which corresponds to
. First, we verify that the ensemble average is proportional to the length of the wire for all values of
, providing the localization length from . Then, we show that the probability distribution
function is fully determined by the exponent and
. In contrast to 1D wires with standard
white-noise disorder, our wire model exhibits bimodal distributions of the
conductance with peaks at and . In addition, we show that
is proportional to , for , with , in

Social networking sites (SNS) include online products such as Facebook that allow
users to build and maintain large interpersonal Inter
net networks. Older adult users have dramatically
increased (Duggan & Smith, 2014). This investigation examined how 212 university undergraduate
Facebook users estimated success with helping others use Facebook when learner’s age (20, 40, 60
year olds.) and type of acquaintance (friend or kin) was manipulated in hypothetical scenarios. In these
scenarios, a person is identified as KW, described as being a college student much like the participant.

learning about social media. This was the only information provided. Qualities and strengths of these
interpersonal relationships were not examined. Results from repeated measures 2x3 ANOVA showed a
significant main eff
ect for age, but no effect for acquaintance type. Results showed no significant
interaction. Although the age demographic above 50 years is the fastest growing SNS group, results
showed possible age stereotyping among youth when they assist older adults le
arning to use SNS. This
age effect may be lessened as older adults become more skillful social media users. These findings are
limited because of the sample demographics and a lack of identifying qualities of participants’
attributions about the hypothetic
al friends or relatives. Future research using multiple items per
condition might be able to further elucidate how the type of associations between helper and learner,
close or distant, positive or negative, would influence outcomes
Peanut-shaped bulges in face-on disk galaxies
We present high resolution absorption-line spectroscopy of 3 face-on
galaxies, NGC 98, NGC 600, and NGC 1703 with the aim of searching for
box/peanut (B/P)-shaped bulges. These observations test and confirm the
prediction of Debattista et al. (2005) that face-on B/P-shaped bulges can be
recognized by a double minimum in the profile of the fourth-order Gauss-Hermite
moment h_4. In NGC 1703, which is an unbarred control galaxy, we found no
evidence of a B/P bulge. In NGC 98, a clear double minimum in h_4 is present
along the major axis of the bar and before the end of the bar, as predicted. In
contrast, in NGC 600, which is also a barred galaxy but lacks a substantial

Shot Noise Enhancement in Resonant Tunneling Structures in a Magnetic Field
We have observed that the shot noise of tunnel current, I, in
GaSb-AlSb-InAs-AlSb-GaSb double-barrier structure under a magnetic field can
exceed 2qI. The measurements were done at T=4K in fields up to 5T parallel to
the current. The noise enhancement occurred at each of the several
negative-differential conductance regions induced by the tunneling of holes
through Landau levels in the InAs quantum well. The amount of the enhancement
increased with the strength of the negative conductance and reached values up
to 8qI. These results are explained qualitatively by fluctuations of the
density of states in the well, but point out the need for a detailed theory of
shot noise enhancement in resonant tunneling devices.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 3 figure
Evolutionary Multi-objective Scheduling for Anti-Spam Filtering Throughput Optimization
This paper presents an evolutionary multi-objective optimization problem formulation for the anti-spam filtering problem, addressing both the classification quality criteria (False Positive and False Negative error rates) and email messages classification time (minimization). This approach is compared to single objective problem formulations found in the literature, and its advantages for decision support and flexible/adaptive anti-spam filtering configuration is demonstrated. A study is performed using the Wirebrush4SPAM framework anti-spam filtering and the SpamAssassin email dataset. The NSGA-II evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithm was applied for the purpose of validating and demonstrating the adoption of this novel approach to the anti-spam filtering optimization problem, formulated from the multi-objective optimization perspective. The results obtained from the experiments demonstrated that this optimization strategy allows the decision maker (anti-spam filtering system administrator) to select among a set of optimal and flexible filter configuration alternatives with respect to classification quality and classification efficiency
