Surfing is a sportingactivity that has become a major business, integrated in the leisure and tourism industries. Due to the impact of surf tourism and to the surfers’ characteristics featured by the time and effort they invest in surfingand their propensity to travel in search for the perfect wave, it is importantto understand if the six serious leisure qualities(perseverance, career, effort, benefits, ethos andidentity) are related with socio-demographic characteristics, surfing profile, surf travel behaviour and surfing destination attributes preferences. Aimingtoachieve these goals, an online survey (in the form of a questionnaire) was applied to a casual sample of 200 surfers in Portugal. The results of this study demonstrate that surfers exhibit the six serious leisure qualities and have a strong disposition to travel for surfing. Moreover, the results highlight that surfers value mainly the surfing natural conditions when choosing a surfing travel destination. Statistical tests also allowed concluding that socio-demographic variables are not good predictors of serious surfing, although serious surfingis correlated with surfing profile, surf travel behaviour and surfing destination attributes preferences. This data enables to provide important information that can be used to strengthen management strategies by surf tourism industry providers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The present study is projected in the knowledge of the importance of neurological factors: laterality, verbal fluency and phonological awareness, focusing on cognitive structures, metalinguistic ability and learning to read and write; vision that guides the integral development of children, from a constructivist approach and scientific knowledge that contribute to learning and understanding, components that benefit the reading-writing process. For the reasons indicated in the methodology, the non-experimental design was applied that relates the variables without direct control and intervention on any of them; while the descriptive method determined the causes, effects and consequences that harm the development of the reading-writing process; through correlational research, the relationship between variables was verified, while intentional non-probability sampling was used to diagnose laterality difficulties, verbal fluency and phonological awareness, the techniques and instruments applied were: the Neuropsychological Test laterality test proposed by ( Martín Lobo, 2011), The test (adapted by Martín Lobo García-Castellón and Vallejo, 2011) from the Institute of Neuropsychology and Education was used; that can be applied from 4 years of age, consisting of four tests that measure the laterality of the eye, ear, foot and hand; subdivided into 10 subtests. The Neuropsychological Assessment Test of executive functions in boys and girls (Portellano, Martínez, & Zumárraga, 2009), the Neuropsychological Assessment of Executive Functions in Children (ENFN) instrument is grouped into four scales: fluency (phonological and semantic); path building (cognitive flexibility, ability to use strategies, inhibition, working memory, sustained and selective attention); rings (child's ability to decompose a problem, cognitive flexibility, abstraction capacity, working memory); interference (evaluation of inhibition); In the study, the test of verbal fluency and phonological awareness was used, numerical data and theoretical scientific information contributed to the determination of conclusions and results

Faced with the demand for plants potted for their foliage, Anthurium maricense is seen as a viable option. However, most of the studies on obtaining micropropagated plantlets are for A. andraeanum, with nothing yet reported for A. maricense. The aim of this study therefore, was to evaluate the effect of four cytokinins in different concentrations, on the in vitro induction of shoots from nodal segments of A. maricense. The experimental design was completely randomised in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme, with four cytokinins (BAP, ZEA, CIN and 2iP) and 4 concentrations (0, 2.22, 4.44 and 6.66 μM), for a total of 16 treatments, with 6 replications of five test tubes, and using one nodal segment. Cultures were kept in a growth room at 25 ± 2°C, a photoperiod of 16 h and a light intensity of 30 μmolm-2 s-1 for 60 days. After this period, the number of shoots formed per node was evaluated. The addition of a cytokinin to the culture medium was determinant for the in vitro regeneration of shoots in A. maricense. The greatest estimated number of shoot formations in A. maricense were obtained in the culture media containing ZEA (3.87) and BAP (3.30), both at concentration of 6.66 μM

Objective: Comparing different methods of clinical and anthropometric assessment of pre-liver transplant patients. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with quantitative approach. We analyzed data from the medical records of pre-transplant patients older than 18 who received care at a Nutrition outpatient clinic of a Liver Transplant Center in Fortaleza-CE. We collected data regarding patient identification, clinical diagnosis, nutritional assessment and diagnosis. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee in Research of Walter Cantídio University Hospital of the Federal University of Ceará. Data were analyzed in the statistical program SPSSTM version 17.0 Results: The sample consisted of 71 patients, with 46 men (64.8%) and 25 women (35.2%), with a mean age of 53.7 years. The average BMI was 27.2 kg/m2; most women were healthy (60.0%) and most men were with excess of body weight (69.0%). As for the nutritional diagnosis according to the percentage of adequacy of the mid-upper arm circumference, we noted that 52.4% and 43.6% of female and male patients, respectively, showed some level of protein-calorie malnutrition. For the triceps skin fold, we noticed that most  male patients (54.5%) were diagnosed as being overweight or obese. When assessing the percentage of adequacy of the mid-upper arm muscle area, most patients of both sexes had some level of malnutrition (62.3%). No significant correlation was observed between the MELD and Child-Pugh severity score (indices that encompass biochemical and clinical parameters for the prognostic evaluation of end-stage liver disease) and anthropometric variables. Conclusion: The severity indicators of the disease were not related to the anthropometric indices, but  most patients who are eligible for a liver transplant were overweight according to BMI, although suffer from muscle mass depletion according to mid-upper arm muscle are, which shows the necessity of the  combined use of several nutritional assessment methods in order to achieve a diagnosis of their body composition and, consequently, a faithful nutritional diagnosis

UID/SOC/04647/2013 SFRH/BPD/112462/2015; SFRH/BPD/77611/2011Although the institutionalization of sociology in Portugal was only made possible after the revolution of 1974, it is currently characterized by a remarkable vitality, apparent for instance in the number and diversity of members of the Associação Portuguesa de Sociologia as well as that of participants at its national conferences. However, significant challenges have also emerged, stemming not only from the expansion and diversification of sociologists, but also from the economic crisis, austerity policies, the enlargement of social science specializations, and the pressures in politics and the media to give advantage to business, law and engineering professionals, courses and research. The present paper will be organized in three sections. Firstly, we will analyse the existing courses of sociology in Portugal (at BA, master and PhD level) as well as the regional location, activity sectors and professional positions of those who have graduated in sociology. Secondly, we will discuss the participation of those different profiles in the Associação Portuguesa de Sociologia throughout time and the ongoing efforts to improve such participation. According to Burawoy’s typology, we suggest that, despite some tensions, academic and critical sociologies have been developed and working together in Portugal, but the connection with a large group of applied sociologists has weakened over time. Public sociology may be the missed link to foster a dialogue among sociologists and other sectors of society. Our national association’s current strategy to develop such links will be sketched. Thirdly, we will present a broad overview of the internationalization of Portuguese sociology, through collaboration in projects and networks, especially with Europe and Portuguese-speaking countries like Brazil and Angola.publishersversionpublishe
