Potassium Nutrition in Fruits and Vegetables and Food Safety through Hydroponic System

    Get PDF
Although it is not an element with structural function in plants, potassium (K) is demanded in considerable quantities by plants due to multifunctional role in plant physiology and metabolism. Nevertheless, the interface of plant mineral nutrition and food safety evidences needs for a better understanding of functional mechanisms of this nutrient in plants, taking into account its management in hydroponic cultivation and food production with nutritional quality. Thus, the nutritional content of K in vegetables is indicative of post-harvest and nutritional quality. This fact is important considering that modern life has induced increased consumption of processed foods whose preparation implies reduction of K levels and increase of Na levels, with the consequent low K intake and appearance of diseases related to insufficient intake. Therefore, the present chapter aimed to address main nutritional, physiological, and biochemical aspects of K in a context of hydroponic plant production and importance of potassium nutrition to human health

Background: Rising healthcare costs demand a transition from the current fee-for-service to a Value-Based Health Care (VBHC) Model. This requires that all future doctors to understand the VBHC Model. We aimed to evaluate the VBHC awareness among Brazilian medical students and to identify it’s associated intrinsic/extrinsic factors through a survey-based, cross-sectional study. Methods: An online survey was sent to students from Brazilian medical schools. A descriptive analysis based on participants' level of awareness about VBHC was performed. The categorical variables included were absolute and relative frequencies using chi-square tests. A multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was performed by calculating the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) to compare each response according to VBHC awareness. Results: We collected 3030 responses from 148 Medical Schools across all Brazilian states. Medical students were compared into 2 groups; 1 was familiar with VBHC (14%; 426); 2 were not (86%; 2575). The univariate analysis showed that group 1 was more willing to share clinical outcomes/costs data related to their practice (57.04%) compared to 2 (48.12%), p<0.01. The multivariate analysis showed that internship experience was the most relevant factor associated with VBHC exposure (OR 4.32 [CI 95% 1.82 - 10.24]). Conclusion: We found that few medical students understand VBHC concepts, and that exposure was due to self-education efforts. Our results suggest that medical schools have the potential to reinforce both intrinsic and extrinsic factors related to students with regards to VBHC knowledge in order to prepare future doctors to practice in a value-driven context

Animais AN tiveram a maior exigência líquida de energia para ganho (4,685 Mcal/kg de GPVz).The body composition and protein and energy requirements for growth of steers of four genetic groups finished in feedlot were evaluated in this experiment. comparative slaughter method was used in a completely randomly experimental design, with four treatments: Nellore (NE), ½ Aberdeen Angus + ½ Nellore (AN), ½ Canchim + ½ Nellore (CN) e ½ Simmental + ½ Nellore (SN). Forty-seven steers averaging 310 kg initial shrunk body weight (SBW) and 22 months were fed during 101 days in a feedlot. Diet on feedlot had the following composition: crude protein, 13.34%; rumen degradable protein, 9.35%; and total digestible nutrients, 71.81% (estimated value). Composition of the 9th-10th-11th ribs was used to calculate empty body composition. No significant differences were found between AN (428 kg) and SN (410 kg) in final empty body weight (EBW), and similarly among CN, NE and SN (389, 390 and 410 kg, respectively), but EBW of AN steers was greater than that of CN and NE cattle. AN steers had higher amount of fat percentage on rib cut. However, less proportion of muscle was observed in the AN group and less bone percentage at the rib cut of the Nelore breed. AN and SN groups had the largest concentration of ether extract and the smallest amount of water percentage on the empty body at slaughter. Steers of AN, NE and SN groups were similar in rate of energy deposition (6.06, 5.20 and 5.80 Mcal/day, respectively). There was no difference among AN and CN cattle on ether extract in empty body weight gain. Simmental × Nelore demonstrated the greatest requirements of protein (0.164 kg/kg of EWG), and AN and CN cattle (0.140 and 0.142 kg/kg of EWG, respectively), the smallest. Angus × Nelore animals required the greatest net energy for gain (4.685 Mcal/kg of EWG).FapespEmbrapa Pecuária SudesteUSP - ESALQ e Instituto de Zootecni

    Get PDF
Chagas disease (CD) has been considered endemic in the South of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) State, Brazil. This study aimed at evaluating the occurrence of Trypanosoma cruzi vectors based on the main species captured in Southern Rio Grande do Sul State from 2008 to 2019. The study area comprised counties that belong to the 3rd Regional Health Coordination (RHC) and to the 7th RHC, whose headquarters are in Pelotas and Bage, respectively. The study was based on secondary data provided by the partnership between the Federal University of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State (UFPel-RS) and the State Health Surveillance Center in RS (SCHS-RS). One thousand and four hundred triatomines were captured in the area supervised by the 3rd RHC, mainly in Cangucu (37.7%), Piratini (22.4%) and Pinheiro Machado (15.1%), while, in the area supervised by the 7th RHC, the largest number of triatomines was captured in Lavras do Sul (64.15%). In both areas, Triatoma rubrovaria (90.6%) and Panstrongylus tupynambai (7.4%) were the most common species. Most were captured inside households but T. cruzi-positive insects were not found in the period under study. The results of this study show that, in Southern Rio Grande do Sul State, there is still a high rate of triatomine household invasion and dispersal, mainly by T. rubrovaria. Thus, the entomological surveillance should be maintained with the participation of the population and further studies should be deepened in the area
