Constitutional Design and Democracy: Analyzing Brazil and Egypt

    Get PDF
This project analyzes the connection between democracy and constitutional design. First, this project will provide a clear definition of democracy in order to successfully analyze each constitution. Secondly, this project will analyze the following concepts as features of democracy: political stability, electoral competition, separation of powers, and political parties. Finally, this project will provide a case study of two democratic nations in order to examine the connection between constitutional design and features of democracy. The following nations were selected based on their Freedom House Global Freedom Scores: Brazil and Egypt

Print Media Reporting of Student Debt Crisis at For-Profit Institutions: Analysis from Post-Great Recession Years

The 21st century has seen an expansion of the higher education system in the United States. Following a rise in college enrollment, the for-profit education system flourished through the 1990s and into the 2000s with flexible programs and promises of high-quality degrees for a post-industrial economy. But as the United States fell into the Great Recession of 2007-2009, questions emerged regarding the true nature of for-profit institutions. Allegations of fraudulent recruiting practices and massive loan payments began to surface amidst print media framing of a burgeoning student debt crisis. In this paper, I attempt to identify media themes associated with for-profit student loan debt using New York Times articles from post-Recession years. I found through coding that themes such as loan default and prey on vulnerable populations were common in post-Recession years as media framing continued to impose a crisis mentality. I conclude that my findings support a crisis framework in the post-Recession higher education sector, fueled by print media reporting of student debt at for-profit institutions. No embargoAcademic Major: Sociolog

Cytogenetic study of women with premature ovarian failure

Etiology of premature ovarian failure (POF) is unclear in most patients. Since some cases are related to X-chromosome abnormalities, cytogenetical studies were conducted in patients with POF. Lymphocyte cultures from eleven patients were compared to cultures from age-matched controls. All individuals presented normal karyotypes. Frequencies of aneuploid and structural chromosome aberrations did not differ between the groups. The X chromosome was more frequently involved in aneuploidy and in premature centromere division in both groups.

Providing Wireless Bandwidth for High-speed Rail Operations

    Get PDF
AbstractAmerican railroads are in the process of introducing a wireless network-based control system – commonly referred to as positive train control (PTC) – to share the railroad among multiple trains, worker vehicles, and other support entities. A major challenge with adopting a wireless based communication systems for high-speed rail (HSR) is the limited bandwidth availability in the USA. The objective of this paper is to analyze the sufficiency of the 220MHz frequency range in supporting PTC-like operations for high-speed trains. The paper begins with a frequency analysis that shows the advantages of using different modulation schemes and channel bandwidths to gain data rates and supporting signaling and beacon networks that uses PTC packets formats. PTC places limitations on the wireless trains speeds with the number of packets required to establish a connection and a minimum distance between overlapping cells, using proposed packet formats. Additionally, using a guard band that can eliminate the Doppler effect caused by increasing train speeds. For example, using a guard band of 300Hz can eliminate the Doppler shift at speeds less than 400mph
