    Comparing geomorphological maps made manually and by deep learning

    Geomorphological maps provide information on the relief, genesis and shape of the earth's surface and are widely used in sustainable spatial developments. The quality of geomorphological maps is however rarely assessed or reported, which limits their applicability. Moreover, older geomorphological maps often do not meet current quality requirements and require updating. This updating is time-consuming and because of its qualitative nature difficult to reproduce, but can be supported by novel computational methods. In this paper, we address these issues by (1) quantifying the uncertainty associated with manual geomorphological mapping, (2) exploring the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for semi-automated geomorphological mapping and (3) testing the sensitivity of CNNs to uncertainties in manually created evaluation data. We selected a test area in the Dutch push-moraine district with a pronounced relief and a high variety of landforms. For this test area we developed five manually created geomorphological maps and 27 automatically created landform maps using CNNs. The resulting manual maps are similar on a regional level. We could identify the causes of disagreement between the maps on a local level, which often related to differences in mapping experience, choices in delineation and different interpretations of the legend. Coordination of mapping efforts and field validation are necessary to create accurate and precise maps. CNNs perform well in identifying landforms and geomorphological units, but fail at correct delineation. The human geomorphologist remains necessary to correct the delineation and classification of the computed maps. The uncertainty in the manually created data that are used to train and evaluate CNNs have a large effect on the model performance and evaluation. This also advocates for coordinated mapping efforts to ensure the quality of manually created training and test data. Further model development and data processing are required before CNNs can act as standalone mapping techniques

    Assessing pre- and postoperative activity levels with an accelerometer: a proof of concept study

    Contains fulltext : 174486.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: Postoperative recovery after abdominal surgery is measured mostly based on subjective or self-reported data. In this article we aim to evaluate whether recovery of daily physical activity levels can be measured postoperatively with the use of an accelerometer. METHODS: In this multicenter, observational pilot study, 30 patients undergoing laparoscopic abdominal surgery (hysterectomy, adnexal surgery, cholecystectomy and hernia inguinal surgery) were included. Patients were instructed to wear an Actigraph wGT3X-BT accelerometer during one week before surgery (baseline) and during the first, third and fifth week after surgery. Wear time, steps taken and physical activity intensity levels (sedentary, light, moderate and vigorous) were measured. Patients were blinded for the accelerometer outcomes. Additionally, an activity diary comprising patients' self-reported time of being recovered and a list of 18 activities, in which the dates of resumption of these 18 activities were recorded after surgery, was completed by the patient. RESULTS: Five patients were excluded from analyses because of technical problems with the accelerometer (n = 1) and protocol non-adherence (n = 4). Light, moderate, vigorous, combined moderate and vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA), and step counts showed a clear recovery curve after surgery. Patients who underwent minor surgery reached their baseline step count and MVPA three weeks after surgery. Patients who underwent intermediate surgery had not yet reached their baseline step count during the last measuring week (five weeks after surgery). The results of the activity diaries showed a fair agreement with the accelerometer results (Cohens Kappa range: 0.273-0.391). Wearing the accelerometer was well tolerated and not regarded as being burdensome by the patients. CONCLUSIONS: The accelerometer appeared to be a feasible way to measure recovery of postoperative physical activity levels in this study and was well tolerated by the patients. The agreement with self-reported physical recovery times was fair.10 p

    Epicardial wall motion and left ventricular function changes during temporary coronary artery occlusion were assessed in a patient at the time of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty performed on a previously placed stenotic coronary artery bypass graft. Epicardial wall motion was analyzed using biplane cineradiography with frame to frame measurements of distances between pairs of radiopaque epicardial markers placed at the time of previous cardiac surgery. Bypass graft occlusion after initial dilation led to the early onset of a biphasic epicardial late systolic lengthening and early diastolic shortening similar to the regional wall motion abnormality preceding the procedure

    Role of lactobacillus cell surface hydrophobicity as probed by AMF in adhesion to surfaces at low and high ionic strength

    The S-layer present at the outermost cell surface of some lactobacillus species is known to convey hydrophobicity to the lactobacillus cell surface. Yet, it is commonly found that adhesion of lactobacilli to solid substrata does not proceed according to expectations based on cell surface hydrophobicity. In this paper, the role of cell surface hydrophobicity of two lactobacillus strains with and without a surface layer protein (SLP) layer has been investigated with regard to their adhesion to hydrophobically or hydrophilically functionalized glass surfaces under well-defined flow conditions and in low and high ionic strength suspensions. Similarly, the interaction of the lactobacilli with similarly functionalized atomic force microscope (AFM) tips was measured. In a low ionic strength suspension, both lactobacillus strains show higher initial deposition rates to hydrophobic glass than to hydrophilic glass, whereas in a high ionic strength suspension no clear influence of cell surface hydrophobicity on adhesion is observed. Independent of ionic strength, however, AFM detects stronger interaction forces when both bacteria and tip are hydrophobic or hydrophilic than when bacteria and tip have opposite hydrophobicities. This suggest that the interaction develops in a different way when a bacterium is forced into contact with the tip surface, like in AFM, as compared with contacts developing between a cell surface and a macroscopic substratum under flow. In addition, the distance dependence of the total Gibbs energy of interaction could only be qualitatively correlated with bacterial deposition and desorption in the parallel plate flow chamber
