Crafting Lives: Experiences of Ethiopian Refugees in Cairo
There has been an ongoing influx of refugees for years driven by political instability, famine, and prolonged conflicts in the region, leading many individuals to seek sanctuary in other countries. Egypt has become a host country for many years, whether for settlement or transit, for various populations from different nationalities hoping to find refuge. However, amidst this influx, Ethiopian refugees often find themselves overlooked or usually associated on the sidelines with other African nationalities; their stories and struggles are marginalized in broader narratives of displacement. The experience of Ethiopians is heterogeneous and multidimensional in terms of their intersectional identities of being a refugee, black, men or women, and discriminated against in the Egyptian milieu due to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crises. This is also triggered by an acute economic and legal situation, making living conditions for vulnerable populations worsen due to dramatic price hikes and uncertainty.
This thesis delves into the lived experiences of Ethiopian refugees in Cairo, specifically Oromo, focusing on their intersectional identities and the unique dynamics they navigate. The research traces the historical trajectories of the Ethiopian diaspora, examines labor dilemmas, and explores the confluence of identity axes in shaping their experiences and opportunities. Through a refugee-centered lens, the study analyzes how migration impacts and reshapes identity categorizations, and how Oromo in Egypt cope with these shifts in the face of the generalized disadvantaged position of victimization. By employing intersectionality as a guiding framework, the paper sheds light on the challenges Oromo Ethiopian refugees face in Egypt and the strategies they utilize to craft a life in such informality and liminality. Going beyond the mere ‘integration’ and nullifying the confines of the formal versus informal myopic dichotomy, labor as a nexus for accessing other needs and securing livelihoods will be a point of departure. Additionally, the role and dynamics of other entities in supporting the refugee community is explored. Through a detailed analysis of these themes, the research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities of refugees’ experiences in Egypt and the broader implications for gender and refugee interdisciplinary studies
Evaluation of RT-PCR and hemi-nested RT-PCR in brain samples from dogs with neurologic signs compatible with distemper
The diagnostic value of RT-PCR and hemi-nested RT-PCR (hnRT-PCR) was compared in brain samples of dogs presenting neurological signs compatible with canine distemper. Samples of central nervous system (CNS) were collected from 68 dogs and tested by direct immunofluorescence test (RFID) and, independent of the results, they were stored at -20°C for at least three years. They were submitted to the RT-PCR and hnRT-PCR techniques aiming to determine the gene responsible for the viral nucleoprotein decoding. Fifty-nine samples were positive for RIFD, 40 for RT-PCR (Kappa = 0.358) and 54 for hnRT-PCR (Kappa = 0.740). All nine RIFD negative samples were also negative for RT-PCR and hnRT-PCR. In spite of the storage duration and proper sample conditions, the estimated accordance between hnRT-PCR and RIFD demonstrated that hnRT-PCR technique can be applied in retrospective studies
Serological study of vaccinia virus reservoirs in areas with and without official reports of outbreaks in cattle and humans in São Paulo, Brazil
Vaccinia virus (VACV), the etiological agent of an exanthematic disease, has been associated with several bovine outbreaks in Brazil since the end of the global vaccination campaign against smallpox. It was previously believed that the vaccine virus used for the WHO global campaign had adapted to an unknown wild reservoir and was sporadically re-emerging in outbreaks in cattle and milkers. At present, it is known that Brazilian VACV is phylogenetically different from the vaccinia virus vaccinal strain, but its origin remains unknown. This study assessed the seroprevalence of orthopoxviruses in domestic and wild animals and farmers from 47 farms in three cities in the southwest region of the state of São Paulo with or without official reports of outbreaks in cattle or humans. Our data indicate a low seroprevalence of antibodies in wild animals and raise interesting questions about the real potential of wild rodents and marsupials as VACV reservoirs, suggesting other routes through which VACV can be spread

Improvement of growth, productivity and some chemical properties of hot pepper by foliar application of amino acids and yeast extract
A greenhouse experiment was conducted during the seasons of 2016 - 2017 to compare the impact of foliar amino acids binding (0.5, 1 and 2 g.L-1) and yeast extract ( 2.5, 5 and 10 g.L-1) on certain development and physiological parameters of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). The results cleared that foliar application of amino acid (2 g.L-1) or yeast (10 g.L-1) increased development parameters of hot pepper compared to control in both first and second seasons. Amino acids foliar implementation with (2 g.L-1) gave higher content of anthocyanins, ascorbic acid, lycopene and íŸ- carotene contents as compared with the control. Also, 10 g.L-1 foliar application of yeast extract showed the best results as compared to control in both first and second seasons. Foliar application of amino acids contents increased phenol and flavonoid contents of hot pepper fruits. Maximum increase was observed at 2 g.L-1 amino acids in both seasons. While 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and lipid peroxidation contents increased with 2 g.L-1 amino acids and 10 g.L-1 yeast foliar application. The HPLC analysis of ethanolic extract of hot pepper fruits has shown fifteen phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds were increased by increasing the concentration of amino acid and yeast extract foliar application in the both two seasons. In conclusion it is recommended to use amino acid (2 g.L-1) and yeast extract (10 g.L-1) foliar application as they play a key role in productivity , also in protecting the environment as eco-friendly and cost-effective inputs for the farmers
