Are the New Deal target groupings well founded? an examination of job search success before the New Deal
This study examines the appropriateness of the New Deal in targeting specific groups of unemployed jobseekers. This is done using a survey of unemployed jobseekers carried out prior to the implementation of the New Deal framework in April 1998. A sample of 169 unemployed jobseekers in two Travel to Work Areas in central Scotland is divided into those who were successful and those who were unsuccessful in finding employment and each group is analysed in terms of a set of labour market related attributes. The study generates a âtypicalâ profile for those who were successful in job search and a âtypicalâ profile for those who were less successful. These are compared and contrasted with the New Deal target groups. The findings support most of the target grouping basis of the policy but not all and we conclude that the generic aim of the New Deal, to reduce social exclusion, is unlikely to be achieved as effectively if spatial priorities are allowed to supercede the needs of the individual jobseeker
Designer diatom episomes delivered by bacterial conjugation.
Eukaryotic microalgae hold great promise for the bioproduction of fuels and higher value chemicals. However, compared with model genetic organisms such as Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, characterization of the complex biology and biochemistry of algae and strain improvement has been hampered by the inefficient genetic tools. To date, many algal species are transformable only via particle bombardment, and the introduced DNA is integrated randomly into the nuclear genome. Here we describe the first nuclear episomal vector for diatoms and a plasmid delivery method via conjugation from Escherichia coli to the diatoms Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Thalassiosira pseudonana. We identify a yeast-derived sequence that enables stable episome replication in these diatoms even in the absence of antibiotic selection and show that episomes are maintained as closed circles at copy number equivalent to native chromosomes. This highly efficient genetic system facilitates high-throughput functional characterization of algal genes and accelerates molecular phytoplankton research
aCGHViewer: A Generic Visualization Tool For aCGH data
Array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH) is a powerful high throughput technology for detecting chromosomal copy number aberrations (CNAs) in cancer, aiming at identifying related critical genes from the affected genomic regions. However, advancing from a dataset with thousands of tabular lines to a few candidate genes can be an onerous and time-consuming process. To expedite the aCGH data analysis process, we have developed a user-friendly aCGH data viewer (aCGHViewer) as a conduit between the aCGH data tables and a genome browser. The data from a given aCGH analysis are displayed in a genomic view comprised of individual chromosome panels which can be rapidly scanned for interesting features. A chromosome panel containing a feature of interest can be selected to launch a detail window for that single chromosome. Selecting a data point of interest in the detail window launches a query to the UCSC or NCBI genome browser to allow the user to explore the gene content in the chromosomal region. Additionally, aCGHViewer can display aCGH and expression array data concurrently to visually correlate the two. aCGHViewer is a stand alone Java visualization application that should be used in conjunction with separate statistical programs. Structural studies reveal the enantiospecific recognition of a DNA G-quadruplex by a ruthenium polypyridyl complex
Using X-ray crystallography, we show an enantiospecificity in DNA G-quadruplex binding, using the complexes Î/â-[Ru(TAP)2(dppz-11-CN)]2+ (TAP=1,4,5,8-tetraazaphenanthrene) containing the dppz (dipyridophenazine) ligand, paralleling the specificity of the complexes with duplex DNA. The Î complex crystallises with the normally parallel stranded d(TAGGGTTA) tetraplex to give the first such antiparallel strand assembly in which syn-guanosine is adjacent to the complex at the 5â end of the quadruplex core. SRCD measurements confirm that the same conformational switch occurs in solution. The Î enantiomer, by contrast, is present in the structure but stacked at the ends of the assembly. In addition, we report the structure of Î-[Ru(phen)2(11-CN-dppz)]2+ bound to d(TCGGCGCCGA), a duplex forming sequence, and use both structural models to aid in the elucidation of the motif-specific luminescence response of the isostructural phen analogue enantiomers
Nonequilibrium ferroelectric-ferroelastic 10-nm nanodomains : wrinkles, period-doubling, and power-law relaxation
Since the 1935 work of Landau and Lifshitz and of Kittel in 1946 all ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and ferroelastic domains have been thought to be straight-sided with domain widths proportional to the square root of the sample thickness. We show in the present work that this is not true. We also discover period doubling domains predicted by Metaxas et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2008, 217208) and modeled by Wang and Zhao Q. (Sci. Rpts. 2015, 5, 8887). We examine non-equilibrium ferroic domain structures in perovskite oxides with respect to folding, wrinkling, and relaxation and suggest that structures are kinetically limited and in the viscous flow regime predicted by Metaxas et al. in 2008 but never observed experimentally. Comparisons are made with liquid crystals and hydrodynamic instabilities, including chevrons, and fractional power-law relaxation. As Shin et al. [Soft Mat. 2016, 12, 3502] recently emphasized: âAn understanding of how these folds initiate, propagate, and interact with each other is still lacking.â Inside each ferroelastic domain are ferroelectric 90-degree nano-domains with 10-nm widths and periodicity in agreement with the 10-nm theoretical minima predicted by Feigl et al. (Nat. Commun. 2014, 5, 4677). Evidence is presented for domain-width period doubling, which is common in polymer films but unknown in ferroic domains. A discussion of the folding-to-period doubling phase transition model of Wang and Zhao is included.PostprintPeer reviewe

Quantifying particle size and turbulent scale dependence of dust uplift in the Sahara using aircraft measurements
The first size-resolved airborne measurements of dust fluxes and the first dust flux measurements from the central Sahara are presented and compared with a parameterization by Kok (2011a). High-frequency measurements of dust size distribution were obtained from 0.16 to 300 ”m diameter, and eddy covariance fluxes were derived. This is more than an order of magnitude larger size range than previous flux estimates. Links to surface emission are provided by analysis of particle drift velocities. Number flux is described by a â2 power law between 1 and 144 ”m diameter, significantly larger than the 12 ”m upper limit suggested by Kok (2011a). For small particles, the deviation from a power law varies with terrain type and the large size cutoff is correlated with atmospheric vertical turbulent kinetic energy, suggesting control by vertical transport rather than emission processes. The measured mass flux mode is in the range 30â100 ”m. The turbulent scales important for dust flux are from 0.1 km to 1â10 km. The upper scale increases during the morning as boundary layer depth and eddy size increase. All locations where large dust fluxes were measured had large topographical variations. These features are often linked with highly erodible surface features, such as wadis or dunes. We also hypothesize that upslope flow and flow separation over such features enhance the dust flux by transporting large particles out of the saltation layer. The tendency to locate surface flux measurements in open, flat terrain means these favored dust sources have been neglected in previous studies
Dietary Long-Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acids Are Related to Impulse Control and Anterior Cingulate Function in Adolescents
Impulse control, an emergent function modulated by the prefrontal cortex (PFC), helps to dampen risky behaviors during adolescence. Influences on PFC maturation during this period may contribute to variations in impulse control. Availability of omega-3 fatty acids, an essential dietary nutrient integral to neuronal structure and function, may be one such influence. This study examined whether intake of energy-adjusted long-chain omega-3 fatty acids [eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] was related to variation in impulse control and PFC activity during performance of an inhibitory task in adolescents (n = 87; 51.7% female, mean age 13.3 ± 1.1 years) enrolled in a longitudinal neuroimaging study. Intake of DHA + EPA was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire and adjusted for total energy intake. Inhibitory control was assessed using caregiver rating scale (BRIEF Inhibit subscale) and task performance (false alarm rate) on a Go/No-Go task performed during functional MRI. Reported intake of long-chain omega-3 was positively associated with caregiver ratings of adolescent ability to control impulses (p = 0.017) and there was a trend for an association between intake and task-based impulse control (p = 0.072). Furthermore, a regression of BOLD response within PFC during successful impulse control (Correct No-Go versus Incorrect No-Go) with energy-adjusted DHA + EPA intake revealed that adolescents reporting lower intakes display greater activation in the dorsal anterior cingulate, potentially suggestive of a possible lag in cortical development. The present results suggest that dietary omega-3 fatty acids are related to development of both impulse control and function of the dorsal anterior cingulate gyrus in normative adolescent development. Insufficiency of dietary omega-3 fatty acids during this developmental period may be a factor which hinders development of behavioral control
