    Evaluation of Masters Choice Corn Silage on Growing Steer Performance

    A growing study evaluated three corn silage hybrids on growing steer performance. Th e three hybrids were: a conventional hybrid- Farm Choice (CON) commonly grown in Eastern Nebraska which served as the control, Masters Choice hybrids MCT6365 RIB (MC1) selected to improve fi ber and starch digestion and MCT6733 GT3000 (MC2) that has been selected to improve fi ber digestion in cattle. Relative to CON, feeding hybrid MC1 resulted in similar DMI, but numerically increased ADG which significantly improved F:G compared to CON. Feeding MC2 led to greater DMI, similar ADG, and poorer (greater) F:G compared to CON. Feeding Masters Choice hybrid MCT6365 RIB (MC1) corn silage at 80% of the diet DM likely improved digestion and energy availability to the steers, which allowed greater ADG and improved F:G, while the opposite was true for MC2. Differences in hybrids exist when fed to growing cattle at 80% of the diet

    The Fabrication and Integration of a 15 MHz Array Within a Biopsy Needle

    It is proposed that integrating ultrasound transducer arrays at the tip of tools such as biopsy needles could enable valuable, real-time image feedback during interventional procedures. High-resolution ultrasound imaging has the potential to aid navigation of interventional tools, and to assist diagnosis or treatment via in-vivo tissue characterisation in the breast, amongst many other applications. In order to produce miniature transducer arrays incorporated within biopsy needle-sized packages (2-5 mm diameter), the challenges in micromachining and handling transducer materials at this scale must be overcome. This paper presents fabrication processes used in the micromachining of a 16 element 15 MHz PIN-PMN-PT piezocrystal-polymer composite array and its integration into an 11 G breast biopsy needle. Particular emphasis is given to the manufacturing of the 1-3 dice-and-fill piezocrystal composite, and establishing electrical interconnects. Characterisation measurements have demonstrated operation of each of the 16 elements within the needle case

    Using virtual street audits to understand the walkability of older adults' route choices by gender and age

    Walking for physical activity can bring important health benefits to older adults. In this population, walking has been related to various urban design features and street characteristics. To gain new insights into the microscale environmental details that might influence seniors’ walking, details which might be more amenable to change than neighbourhood level factors, we employed a reliable streetscape audit tool, in combination with Google Street View™, to evaluate the ‘walkability’ of where older adults choose to walk. Analysis of the routes selected by a purposive sample of independently mobile adults aged 65 years and over living in Edinburgh, UK, revealed a preference to walk in more walkable environments, alongside a willingness to walk in less supportive settings. At times, factors commonly considered important for walking, including wayfinding and legibility, user conflict, kerb paving quality, and lighting appeared to have little impact on older adults’ decisions about where to walk.     Arrest in hospital: a study of in hospital cardiac arrest outcomes.

    The effect of advances in cardiac arrest management over the last five decades on in-hospital cardiac arrest survival rates is not clear. Data on 212 arrests between January 2010 and May 2013 were retrospectively analyzed by means of an audit form based upon the Utstein template for in-hospital cardiac arrest, with a view to identifying significant associations between arrest characteristics and return of spontaneous circulation or survival to discharge. Significant associations were identified between return of spontaneous circulation and location (ward, 36 patients (38%) vs. ICU, 33 Patients (56%); P = 0.032), whether an arrest was witnessed or not (82 patients (52%) vs. 9 patients (30%); P = 0.029), whether the initial rhythm was shockable or non-shockable (28 patients (85%) vs. 38 patients (31%); P \u3c 0.001), whether the first dose of adrenaline was administered within 2 minutes of arrest onset or later (13 patients (54%) vs. 12 patients (28%); P = 0.04)

    This article presents the use of computational modelling software (e.g. ANSYS) for the purposes of simulating, evaluating and developing medical and surgical practice. We provide a summary of computational simulation mo delling that has recently been employed through effective collaborations between the medical, mathematical and engineering research communities. Here, particular attention is being paid to the modelling of medical devices as well as providing an overview o f modelling bone, artificial organs and microvascular blood flows in the machine space of a High Performance Computer (HPC)
