    Orbital dynamics of large solar power satellites

    Designs for geostationary SPS are extremely large in scale, more than an order of magnitude larger than the International Space Station. The problem of how to control the orbital motion of such large structures, accounting for various perturbing forces, is therefore a topic worthy of further study. The primary objective of the proposed research is to perform a detailed study of SPS orbit dynamics, obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the effect of perturbations on orbits of large SPS structures over a time-frame commensurate with proposed SPS lifetimes (30-40 years). Analytical equations derived by the process of averaging of the SPS equations of motion shall be used in determining the long-term orbital behaviour. Previous studies have simply assumed a geostationary orbit (GEO) then designed control systems for maintaining it thus. It is found that an alternative SPS orbital location known as the geosynchronous Laplace plane (GLP) is superior to GEO. An SPS in GLP requires virtually no fuel to maintain its orbit, avoids the main orbital debris population originating from GEO satellites and is extremely robust, i.e. loss of control is inconsequential. The GLP SPS saves of order 10<sup>4</sup> to 10<sup>5</sup> kg per year in fuel compared to a GEO SPS for equivalent power delivery compared to GEO

    The family under the microscope: an experiment testing economic models of household choice.

    We devise and execute three experiments to test key features of models of household decision-making. Using established couples (married and unmarried) we test income pooling, unanimity and Pareto efficiency. Subjects make choices individually and jointly and are asked to make predictions about their partner’s choices. Unanimity is rejected. Income pooling is not rejected in joint choice but has less explanatory power in individual choice. In direct tests both sexes do not pool income completely, but in econometric tests across all tasks, women place an equal weight on payoffs but men discount their partner’s payoffs by between 15 and 20%. We find that transparency has little impact on deviations from income pooling or indeed on behaviour generally. Many joint choices deviate from the Pareto principle in a systematic manner suggesting that choices made as a couple are more risk averse than individual decisions.experiment; household; unitary; income pooling; Pareto; family

    Designs for geostationary (GEO) solar power satellites (SPS) are extremely large in scale, more than one order of magnitude larger than the International Space Station. In this thesis a detailed study of the orbit dynamics of SPS is performed. Analytical equations, derived by the process of averaging of the SPS equations of motion, are used to determine the long-term orbital evolution. Previous SPS studies have simply assumed a GEO as the operational orbit, and then designed control systems for maintaining the orbit within acceptable nominal values. It is found that an alternative SPS orbital location known as the geosynchronous Laplace plane orbit (GLPO) is superior to GEO in many aspects. An SPS in GLPO requires virtually no fuel to maintain its orbit, minimises the risk of debris creation at geosynchronous altitude, and is extremely robust operationally, i.e. loss of control is inconsequential. The GLPO SPS requires approximately 10^5 kg less fuel per year compared to a GEO SPS while providing near equivalent power delivery. Although savings in orbit control are achieved, depending on the mass distribution of the SPS, attitude control costs may be incurred by placing an SPS in GLPO. Consideration of the attitude dynamics of SPS has motivated the development of a model for the rotational dynamics of a body which includes energy dissipation and the effects of external torques. Multiple spring-damper masses are used to provide a mechanism for energy dissipation. This rotational dynamics model is used to assess the naturally stable attitude configurations of a SPS design in geosynchronous orbit subject to gravity gradient torque. It is found that for a large planar array, a dynamically stable configuration requiring nominal orbit-attitude control is possible. This involves rotating around the maximum axis of inertia at the orbit rate, with the minimal axis aligned in the radial direction. It will be shown that a SPS in this configuration while in GLPO requires virtually no orbit or attitude control. The most significant result of the research in this thesis is proving that a SPS can operate in GLPO with nominal orbit control and yet still deliver almost equivalent power to the Earth’s surface as the same SPS would in a controlled GEO

    Clinical prevalence of Lewy body dementia.

    BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and dementia in Parkinson's disease (PDD) in routine clinical practice is unclear. Prevalence rates observed in clinical and population-based cohorts and neuropathological studies vary greatly. Small sample sizes and methodological factors in these studies limit generalisability to clinical practice. METHODS: We investigated prevalence in a case series across nine secondary care services over an 18-month period, to determine how commonly DLB and PDD cases are diagnosed and reviewed within two regions of the UK. RESULTS: Patients with DLB comprised 4.6% (95% CI 4.0-5.2%) of all dementia cases. DLB was represented in a significantly higher proportion of dementia cases in services in the North East (5.6%) than those in East Anglia (3.3%; χ2 = 13.6, p < 0.01). DLB prevalence in individual services ranged from 2.4 to 5.9%. PDD comprised 9.7% (95% CI 8.3-11.1%) of Parkinson's disease cases. No significant variation in PDD prevalence was observed between regions or between services. CONCLUSIONS: We found that the frequency of clinical diagnosis of DLB varied between geographical regions in the UK, and that the prevalence of both DLB and PDD was much lower than would be expected in this case series, suggesting considerable under-diagnosis of both disorders. The significant variation in DLB diagnostic rates between these two regions may reflect true differences in disease prevalence, but more likely differences in diagnostic practice. The systematic introduction of more standardised diagnostic practice could improve the rates of diagnosis of both conditions

    Novel nesprin-1 mutations associated with dilated cardiomyopathy cause nuclear envelope disruption and defects in myogenesis

    Nesprins-1 and -2 are highly expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle and together with SUN (Sad1p/UNC84)-domain containing proteins and lamin A/C form the LInker of Nucleoskeleton-and-Cytoskeleton (LINC) bridging complex at the nuclear envelope (NE). Mutations in nesprin-1/2 have previously been found in patients with autosomal dominant Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy (EDMD) as well as dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). In this study, three novel rare variants (R8272Q, S8381C and N8406K) in the C-terminus of the SYNE1 gene (nesprin-1) were identified in seven DCM patients by mutation screening. Expression of these mutants caused nuclear morphology defects and reduced lamin A/C and SUN2 staining at the NE. GST pull-down indicated that nesprin-1/lamin/SUN interactions were disrupted. Nesprin-1 mutations were also associated with augmented activation of the ERK pathway in vitro and in hearts in vivo. During C2C12 muscle cell differentiation, nesprin-1 levels are increased concomitantly with kinesin light chain (KLC-1/2) and immunoprecipitation and GST pull-down showed that these proteins interacted via a recently identified LEWD domain in the C-terminus of nesprin-1. Expression of nesprin-1 mutants in C2C12 cells caused defects in myoblast differentiation and fusion associated with dysregulation of myogenic transcription factors and disruption of the nesprin-1 and KLC-1/2 interaction at the outer nuclear membrane. Expression of nesprin-1α2 WT and mutants in zebrafish embryos caused heart developmental and conduction defects that varied in severity. These findings support a role for nesprin-1 in myogenesis and muscle disease, and uncover a novel mechanism whereby disruption of the LINC complex may contribute to the pathogenesis of DCM

    Growth of CuCl thin films by magnetron sputtering for ultraviolet optoelectronic applications

    Copper (I) chloride (CuCl) is a potential candidate for ultraviolet (UV) optoelectronics due to its close lattice match with Si (mismatch less than 0.4%) and a high UV excitonic emission at room temperature. CuCl thin films were deposited using radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique. The influence of target to substrate distance (dts) and sputtering pressure on the composition, microstructure, and UV emission properties of the films were analyzed. The films deposited with shorter target to substrate spacing (dts=3 cm) were found to be nonstoichiometric, and the film stoichiometry improves when the substrate is moved away from the target (dts=4.5 and 6 cm). A further increase in the spacing results in poor crystalline quality. The grain interface area increases when the sputtering pressure is increased from 1.1×10–³ to 1×10–² mbar at dts=6 cm. Room temperature cathodoluminescence spectrum shows an intense and sharp UV exciton (Z₃) emission at ~385 nm with a full width at half maximum of 16 nm for the films deposited at the optimum dts of 6 cm and a pressure of 1.1×10–³ mbar. A broad deep level emission in the green region (~515 nm) is also observed. The relative intensity of the UV to green emission peaks decreased when the sputtering pressure was increased, consistent with an increase in grain boundary area. The variation in the stoichiometry and the crystallinity are attributed to the change in the intensity and energy of the flux of materials from the target due to the interaction with the background gas molecules
