    Voluntary Disclosures by Activist Shareholders

    Get PDF
Using hand-collected data, we find that activist shareholders often publicly disclose open letters that demand various changes in corporate operating decisions at their target firms. These letters are associated with significant stock price movements, decreased bid-ask spreads, and key activism outcomes such as directorship wins, corporate strategy shifts, and proxy advisor recommendations. Managers commonly respond to activists' open letters with their own voluntary disclosures. We conclude that activists use voluntary disclosure to mitigate investor information asymmetry and that managers' voluntary disclosures can be induced by activists

Rocuronium vs Succinylcholine: Emergency Airway Management of the COVID-19 Patient

Tracheal Intubation is routinely performed in many settings.  Anesthesia providers are experts in this procedure.  Determination for the best possible approach for tracheal intubation include patient and provider specific considerations.  Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS CoV-2) infection has led to the COVID-19 pandemic.  SARS CoV-2 is a highly contagious RNA virus that has caused widespread infections, severe respiratory disease, and deaths.  The purpose of this article is to describe the airway management currently recommended in Germany as well as the United States, the multi-systems pathophysiologic complications of these patients, and review the need for minimum airway manipulation prior to intubation of the trachea.  Further, this article discusses the pharmacologic options that are available for muscle relaxation during rapid sequence induction.  A review of the literature was performed.  Further, some authors of this article have actively participated in airway management of COVID-19 patients.  Available literature and guidelines suggest that rapid sequence induction with minimal airway manipulation is superior to standard induction. The article suggests that appropriate doses of rocuronium with an option of sugammadex reversal is a safer and superior choice to succinylcholine

Airway microbiota-host interactions regulate secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor levels and influence allergic airway inflammation

Homeostatic mucosal immune responses are fine-tuned by naturally evolved interactions with native microbes, and integrating these relationships into experimental models can provide new insights into human diseases. Here, we leverage a murine-adapted airway microbe, Bordetella pseudohinzii (Bph), to investigate how chronic colonization impacts mucosal immunity and the development of allergic airway inflammation (AAI). Colonization with Bph induces the differentiation of interleukin-17A (IL-17A)-secreting T-helper cells that aid in controlling bacterial abundance. Bph colonization protects from AAI and is associated with increased production of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI), an antimicrobial peptide with anti-inflammatory properties. These findings are additionally supported by clinical data showing that higher levels of upper respiratory SLPI correlate both with greater asthma control and the presence of Haemophilus, a bacterial genus associated with AAI. We propose that SLPI could be used as a biomarker of beneficial host-commensal relationships in the airway

Isolated right ventricular failure in hyperthyroidism: a clinical dilemma

    Get PDF
We present a unique case of a 42-year-old gentleman with newly diagnosed Graves’ disease and isolated right ventricular failure. Extensive evaluation to include echocardiogram and cardiac catheterization were negative for significant pulmonary hypertension or coronary artery disease as potential etiologies. Hyperthyroid induced vasospasm is a rare but reported clinical entity that serves to be a clinical and diagnostic dilemma

The gut microbiota of people with asthma influences lung inflammation in gnotobiotic mice

    Get PDF
The gut microbiota in early childhood is linked to asthma risk, but may continue to affect older patients with asthma. Here, we profile the gut microbiota of 38 children (19 asthma, median age 8) and 57 adults (17 asthma, median age 28) by 16S rRNA sequencing and find individuals with asthma harbored compositional differences from healthy controls in both adults and children. We develop a model to aid the design of mechanistic experiments in gnotobiotic mice and show enterotoxigeni
