A Return on Investment Model for Air Force Technology Transfer
Air Force policy states the fundamental reason for participating in technology transfer is to maximize the return on investment (ROI) on research and development (R&D) funds. Public law dictates that federal agencies, including the Air Force, are to spend no less than 0.5% of their overall R&D budget in the pursuit of technology transfer. However, there is currently no ROI model available to the decision maker in the evaluation of alternative transfer opportunities. This research effort develops a model that measures the ROI of individual cooperative research and development agreements (CIWAs) on the basis of the objective and subjective benefits amassed. The model results assist the decision maker by providing a relative ranking of each transfer opportunity in comparison to one another. A sensitivity analysis method and results are included which identity definite regions of alternate optimal choices depending on the weight given to objective and subjective benefits. Consequently, the decision maker is provided with a flexible model for use in maximizing ROI, the Air Force\u27s goal for technology transfer
Drift Macroalgal Distribution In Northern Gulf of Mexico Seagrass Meadows
Drift macroalgae, often found in clumps or mats adjacent to or within seagrass beds, can increase the value of seagrass beds as habitat for nekton via added food resources and structural complexity. But, as algal biomass increases, it can also decrease light availability, inhibit faunal movements, smother benthic communities, and contribute to hypoxia, all of which can reduce nekton abundance. We quantified the abundance and distribution of drift macroalgae within seagrass meadows dominated by turtle grass Thalassia testudinum across the northern Gulf of Mexico and compared seagrass characteristics to macroalgal biomass and distribution. Drift macroalgae were most abundant in areas with higher seagrass shoot densities and intermediate canopy heights. We did not find significant relationships between algal biomass and point measures of salinity, temperature, or depth. The macroalgal genera Laurencia and Gracilaria were present across the study region, Agardhiella and Digenia were collected in the western Gulf of Mexico, and Acanthophora was collected in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Our survey revealed drift algae to be abundant and widespread throughout seagrass meadows in the northern Gulf of Mexico, which likely influences the habitat value of seagrass ecosystems
Interface Tension in Quenched QCD
We calculate the tension of the interface between the confined and
deconfined phases by the histogram method in SU(3) lattice gauge theory for
temporal extents of 4 and 6 using the recent high-statistics data by QCDPAX
collaboration. The results are and 0.0218(33) for
and 6, respectively. The ratio shows a scaling violation
similar to that already observed for the latent heat \latent. However, we
find that the physically interesting dimensionless combinations
(\sigma^{3}/\latent^2 T)^{1/2} and \sigma T/ \latent scale within the

On chirp stimuli and neural synchrony in the suprathreshold auditory brainstem response
The chirp-evoked ABR has been regarded as a more synchronous response than the click-evoked ABR, referring to the belief that the chirp stimulates lower-, mid-, and higher-frequency regions of the cochlea simultaneously. In this study a variety of tools were used to analyze the synchronicity of ABRs evoked by chirp- and click-stimuli at 40 dB HL in 32 normal hearing subjects aged 18 to 55 years (mean=24.8 years, SD=7.1 years). Compared to the click-evoked ABRs, the chirp-evoked ABRs showed larger wave V amplitudes, but an absence of earlier waves in the grand averages, larger wave V latency variance, smaller FFT magnitudes at the higher component frequencies, and larger phase variance at the higher component frequencies. These results strongly suggest that the chirp-evoked ABRs exhibited less synchrony than the click-evoked ABRs in this study. It is proposed that the temporal compensation offered by chirp stimuli is sufficient to increase neural recruitment (as measured by wave V amplitude), but that destructive phase interactions still exist along the cochlea partition, particularly in the low frequency portions of the cochlea where more latency jitter is expected. Effects of High-Volume Versus High-Load Resistance Training on Skeletal Muscle Growth and Molecular Adaptations
We evaluated the effects of higher-load (HL) versus (lower-load) higher-volume (HV) resistance training on skeletal muscle hypertrophy, strength, and muscle-level molecular adaptations. Trained men (n = 15, age: 23 ± 3 years; training experience: 7 ± 3 years) performed unilateral lower-body training for 6 weeks (3× weekly), where single legs were randomly assigned to HV and HL paradigms. Vastus lateralis (VL) biopsies were obtained prior to study initiation (PRE) as well as 3 days (POST) and 10 days following the last training bout (POSTPR). Body composition and strength tests were performed at each testing session, and biochemical assays were performed on muscle tissue after study completion. Two-way within-subject repeated measures ANOVAs were performed on most dependent variables, and tracer data were compared using dependent samples t-tests. A significant interaction existed for VL muscle cross-sectional area (assessed via magnetic resonance imaging; interaction p = 0.046), where HV increased this metric from PRE to POST (+3.2%, p = 0.018) whereas HL training did not (−0.1%, p = 0.475). Additionally, HL increased leg extensor strength more so than HV training (interaction p = 0.032; HV \u3c HL at POST and POSTPR, p \u3c 0.025 for each). Six-week integrated non-myofibrillar protein synthesis (iNon-MyoPS) rates were also higher in the HV versus HL condition, while no difference between conditions existed for iMyoPS rates. No interactions existed for other strength, VL morphology variables, or the relative abundances of major muscle proteins. Compared to HL training, 6 weeks of HV training in previously trained men optimizes VL hypertrophy in lieu of enhanced iNon-MyoPS rates, and this warrants future research
Definitive intensity modulated proton re-irradiation for lung cancer in the immunotherapy era
IntroductionAs immunotherapy has improved distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), isolated locoregional recurrences have increased. However, management of locoregional recurrences can be challenging. We report our institutional experience with definitive intent re-irradiation using Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT).MethodRetrospective cohort study of recurrent or second primary NSCLC or LS-SCLC treated with IMPT. Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used for time-to-event analyses.Results22 patients were treated from 2019 to 2021. After first course of radiation (median 60 Gy, range 45-70 Gy), 45% received adjuvant immunotherapy. IMPT re-irradiation began a median of 28.2 months (8.8-172.9 months) after initial radiotherapy. The median IMPT dose was 60 GyE (44-60 GyE). 36% received concurrent chemotherapy with IMPT and 18% received immunotherapy after IMPT. The median patient’s IMPT lung mean dose was 5.3 GyE (0.9-13.9 GyE) and 5 patients had cumulative esophagus max dose >100 GyE with 1-year overall survival (OS) 68%, 1-year local control 80%, 1-year progression free survival 45%, and 1-year DMFS 60%. Higher IMPT (HR 1.4; 95% CI 1.1-1.7, p=0.01) and initial radiotherapy mean lung doses (HR 1.3; 95% CI 1.0-1.6, p=0.04) were associated with worse OS. Two patients developed Grade 3 pneumonitis or dermatitis, one patient developed Grade 2 pneumonitis, and seven patients developed Grade 1 toxicity. There were no Grade 4 or 5 toxicities.DiscussionDefinitive IMPT re-irradiation for lung cancer can prolong disease control with limited toxicity, particularly in the immunotherapy era
Managing Wicked Herbicide-Resistance: Lessons from the Field
Herbicide resistance is ‘wicked’ in nature; therefore, results of the many educational efforts to encourage diversification of weed control practices in the United States have been mixed. It is clear that we do not sufficiently understand the totality of the grassroots obstacles, concerns, challenges, and specific solutions needed for varied crop production systems. Weed management issues and solutions vary with such variables as management styles, regions, cropping systems, and available or affordable technologies. Therefore, to help the weed science community better understand the needs and ideas of those directly dealing with herbicide resistance, seven half-day regional listening sessions were held across the United States between December 2016 and April 2017 with groups of diverse stakeholders on the issues and potential solutions for herbicide resistance management. The major goals of the sessions were to gain an understanding of stakeholders and their goals and concerns related to herbicide resistance management, to become familiar with regional differences, and to identify decision maker needs to address herbicide resistance. The messages shared by listening-session participants could be summarized by six themes: we need new herbicides; there is no need for more regulation; there is a need for more education, especially for others who were not present; diversity is hard; the agricultural economy makes it difficult to make changes; and we are aware of herbicide resistance but are managing it. The authors concluded that more work is needed to bring a community-wide, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complexity of managing weeds within the context of the whole farm operation and for communicating the need to address herbicide resistance
