Generalized Weyl algebras and diskew polynomial rings
The aim of the paper is to extend the class of generalized Weyl algebras (GWAs) to a larger class of rings (they are also called GWAs) that are determined by two ring endomorphisms rather than one as in the case of âoldâ GWAs. A new class of rings, the diskew polynomial rings, is introduced that is closely related to GWAs (they are GWAs under a mild condition). Simplicity criteria are given for GWAs and diskew polynomial rings
COMPTEL upper limits for Seyfert galaxies
The gammaâray emission of Seyfert galaxies has fallen far short of preâGRO expectations. No single object of this class has been detected by either COMPTEL or EGRET, and OSSE has detected only a fraction of the Seyferts expected. To derive a more stringent upper limit to the emission from these objects in the energy ranges 0.75 to 1 and 1 to 3 MeV, we have summed a large number of COMPTEL observations acquired during Phase 1 of the GRO mission. From a total of 47 observations of 23 individual Xâray selected Seyfert galaxies, we derive preliminary upper limits of 8Ă10â8 photons/(cm2 s keV) in the 0.75â1 MeV band and 1Ă10â8 photons/(cm2 s keV) in the 1â3 MeV band
Variable cavity volume tooling for high-performance resin infusion moulding
This article describes the research carried out by Warwick under the BAE Systems/EPSRC programme âFlapless Aerial Vehicles Integrated Interdisciplinary Research â FLAVIIRâ. Warwick's aim in FLAVIIR was to develop low-cost innovative tooling technologies to enable the affordable manufacture of complex composite aerospace structures and to help realize the aim of the Grand Challenge of maintenance-free, low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle manufacture. This article focuses on the evaluation of a novel tooling process (variable cavity tooling) to enable the complete infusion of resin throughout non-crimp fabric within a mould cavity under low (0.1 MPa) injection pressure. The contribution of the primary processing parameters to the mechanical properties of a carbon composite component (bulk-head lug section), and the interactions between parameters, was determined. The initial mould gap (di) was identified as having the most significant effect on all measured mechanical properties, but complex interactions between di, n (number of fabric layers), and vc (mould closure rate) were observed. The process capability was low due to the manual processing, but was improved through process optimization, and delivered properties comparable to high-pressure resin transfer moulding
Algorithms for Visualizing Phylogenetic Networks
We study the problem of visualizing phylogenetic networks, which are
extensions of the Tree of Life in biology. We use a space filling visualization
method, called DAGmaps, in order to obtain clear visualizations using limited
space. In this paper, we restrict our attention to galled trees and galled
networks and present linear time algorithms for visualizing them as DAGmaps.Comment: Appears in the Proceedings of the 24th International Symposium on

Soap Froths and Crystal Structures
We propose a physical mechanism to explain the crystal symmetries found in
macromolecular and supramolecular micellar materials. We argue that the packing
entropy of the hard micellar cores is frustrated by the entropic interaction of
their brush-like coronas. The latter interaction is treated as a surface effect
between neighboring Voronoi cells. The observed crystal structures correspond
to the Kelvin and Weaire-Phelan minimal foams. We show that these structures
are stable for reasonable areal entropy densities.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 2 included eps figure
CdZnTe strip detectors as sub-millimeter resolution imaging gamma radiation spectrometers
We report Îł-ray detection performance measurements and computer simulations of a sub-millimeter pitch CdZnTe strip detector. The detector is a prototype for Îł-ray measurements in the range of 20-600 keV. The prototype is a 1.5 mm thick, 64Ă64 orthogonal stripe CdZnTe detector of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions, with approximately one square inch of sensitive area. Using discrete laboratory electronics to process signals from an 8Ă8 stripe region of the prototype we measured good spectroscopic uniformity and sub-pitch (~0.2 mm) spatial resolution in both x and y dimensions. We present below measurements of the spatial uniformity, relative timing and pulse height of the anode and cathode signals. We simulated the photon interactions and signal generation in the strip detector and the test electronics and we compare these results with the data. The data indicate that cathode signal-as well as the anode signal-arises more strongly from the conduction electrons rather than the holes
Performance of CdZnTe strip detectors as sub-millimeter resolution imaging gamma radiation spectrometers

We present below measurements of the spatial uniformity, relative timing and pulse height of the anode and cathode signals, and the photon detection efficiency. We also present a technique for determining the location of the event in the third dimension (depth). We simulated the photon interactions and signal generation in the strip detector and the test electronics and we compare these results with the data. The data indicate that the cathode signal-as well as the anode signal-arises more strongly from the conduction electrons rather than the holes
Balloon-borne coded aperture telescope for arc-minute angular resolution at hard x-ray energies
We are working on the development of a new balloon-borne telescope, MARGIE (minute-of-arc resolution gamma ray imaging experiment). It will be a coded aperture telescope designed to image hard x-rays (in various configurations) over the 20 - 600 keV range with an angular resolution approaching one arc minute. MARGIE will use one (or both) of two different detection plane technologies, each of which is capable of providing event locations with sub-mm accuracies. One such technology involves the use of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) strip detectors. We have successfully completed a series of laboratory measurements using a prototype CZT detector with 375 micron pitch. Spatial location accuracies of better than 375 microns have been demonstrated. A second type of detection plane would be based on CsI microfiber arrays coupled to a large area silicon CCD readout array. This approach would provide spatial resolutions comparable to that of the CZT prototype. In one possible configuration, the coded mask would be 0.5 mm thick tungsten, with 0.5 mm pixels at a distance of 1.5 m from the central detector giving an angular resolution of 1 arc-minute and a fully coded field of view of 12 degrees. We review the capabilities of the MARGIE telescope and report on the status of our development efforts and our plans for a first balloon flight
Magnetic Resonance of the Intrinsic Defects of the Spin-Peierls Magnet CuGeO3
ESR of the pure monocrystals of CuGeO3 is studied in the frequency range 9-75
GHz and in the temperature interval 1.2-25 K. The splitting of the ESR line
into several spectral components is observed below 5 K, in the temperature
range where the magnetic susceptibility is suppressed by the spin-Peierls
dimerization. The analysis of the magnetic resonance signals allows one to
separate the signals of the S=1/2- and S=1 defects of the spin-Peierls phase.
The value of g-factor of these signals is close to that of the Cu-ion. The
additional line of the magnetic resonance is characterized by an anomalous
value of the g-factor and by the threshold-like increase of the microwave
susceptibility when the microwave power is increasing. The ESR signals are
supposingly attributed to two types of the planar magnetic defects, arising at
the boundaries of the domains of the spin-Peierls state with the different
values of the phase of the dimerization.Comment: LATEX-text, 12 PS-figures, typos corrected, LATEX-style change
The effects of 8Â weeks of inspiratory muscle training on the balance of healthy older adults: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
To examine the effects of 8-week unsupervised, home-based inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on the balance and physical performance of healthy older adults. Fifty-nine participants (74 ± 6 years) were assigned randomly in a double-blinded fashion to either IMT or sham-IMT, using a pressure threshold loading device. The IMT group performed 30-breath twice daily at ~50% of maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP). The sham-IMT group performed 60-breaths once daily at ~15% MIP; training was home-based and unsupervised, with adherence self-reported through training diaries. Respiratory outcomes were assessed pre- and postintervention, including forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume, peak inspiratory flow rate (PIFR), MIP, and inspiratory peak power. Balance and physical performance outcomes were measured using the shortened version of the Balance Evaluation System test (mini-BEST), BiodexÂź postural stability test, timed up and go, five sit-to-stand, isometric "sit-up" and Biering-SĂžrensen tests. Between-group effects were examined using two-way repeated measures ANOVA, with Bonferroni correction. After 8-week, the IMT group demonstrated greater improvements (P â€Â 0.05) in: PIFR (IMT = 0.9 ± 0.3 L sec-1 ; sham-IMT = 0.3 L sec-1 ); mini-BEST (IMT = 3.7 ± 1.3; sham-IMT = 0.5 ± 0.9) and Biering-SĂžrensen (IMT = 62.9 ± 6.4 sec; sham-IMT = 24.3 ± 1.4 sec) tests. The authors concluded that twice daily unsupervised, home-based IMT is feasible and enhances inspiratory muscle function and balance for community-dwelling older adults
