Adults with Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder: What Is the Evidence around the Use of Polypharmacy

    Get PDF
A review on the mental health needs of adults with intellectual disability (ID) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) published just over 10 years ago found a limited evidence base for pharmacological intervention in this group. The aim of this paper was therefore to review the evidence in the subsequent 10 years, with a focus on polypharmacy use in adults who have both ID and ASD. A critical literature review of key papers published from 2009 to 2021 was undertaken on adults with both ID and ASD and related to psychopharmacology, polypharmacy, antipsychotics, antidepressants, mood stabilisers and anxiolytics interventions in improving symptoms. After excluding articles for lack of relevance, a review with a focus on the use of polypharmacy was carried out on the retrieved results. Four papers were identified as relevant to adults with both ID and ASD. Three main themes were identified in the review, including the application of pharmacogenetics, the influence of national policy on prescribing practices and safety concerns in a population with multiple health comorbidities. The past decade has produced a small increase in the evidence base on psychopharmacology use in adults with ID and ASD. However, more evidence on the effectiveness and impact of long-term polypharmacy use is required

Representing older people: towards meaningful images of the user in design scenarios

Designing for older people requires the consideration of a range of difficult and sometimes highly personal design problems. Issues such as fear, loneliness, dependency, and physical decline may be difficult to observe or discuss in interviews. Pastiche scenarios and pastiche personae are techniques that employ characters to create a space for the discussion of new technological developments and as a means to explore user experience. This paper argues that the use of such characters can help to overcome restrictive notions of older people by disrupting designers' prior assumptions. In this paper, we reflect on our experiences using pastiche techniques in two separate technology design projects that sought to address the needs of older people. In the first case pastiche scenarios were developed by the designers of the system and used as discussion documents with users. In the second case, pastiche personae were used by groups of users themselves to generate scenarios which were scribed for later use by the design team. We explore how the use of fictional characters and settings can generate new ideas and undermine rhetorical devices within scenarios that attempt to fit characters to the technology, rather than vice versa. To assist in future development of pastiche techniques in designing for older people, we provide an array of fictional older characters drawn from literary and popular culture.</p

Arithmetical properties of Multiple Ramanujan sums

In the present paper, we introduce a multiple Ramanujan sum for arithmetic functions, which gives a multivariable extension of the generalized Ramanujan sum studied by D. R. Anderson and T. M. Apostol. We then find fundamental arithmetic properties of the multiple Ramanujan sum and study several types of Dirichlet series involving the multiple Ramanujan sum. As an application, we evaluate higher-dimensional determinants of higher-dimensional matrices, the entries of which are given by values of the multiple Ramanujan sum.Comment: 19 page

Impact of van der Waals forces on the classical shuttle instability

The effects of including the van der Waals interaction in the modelling of the single electron shuttle have been investigated numerically. It is demonstrated that the relative strength of the vdW-forces and the elastic restoring forces determine the characteristics of the shuttle instability. In the case of weak elastic forces and low voltages the grain is trapped close to one lead, and this trapping can be overcome by Coulomb forces by applying a bias voltage VV larger than a threshold voltage VuV_{\rm u}. This allows for grain motion leading to an increase in current by several orders of magnitude above the transition voltage VuV_{\rm u}. Associated with the process is also hysteresis in the I-V characteristics.Comment: minor revisions, updated references, Article published in Phys. Rev. B 69, 035309 (2004

Elastic Scattering of Pions From the Three-nucleon System

    Get PDF
We examine the scattering of charged pions from the trinucleon system at a pion energy of 180 MeV. The motivation for this study is the structure seen in the experimental angular distribution of back-angle scattering for pi+ 3He and pi- 3H but for neither pi- 3He nor pi+ 3H. We consider the addition of a double spin flip term to an optical model treatment and find that, though the contribution of this term is non-negligible at large angles for pi+ 3He and pi- 3H, it does not reproduce the structure seen in the experiment.Comment: 15 pages + 5 figure

Open Issues on the Synthesis of Evolved Stellar Populations at Ultraviolet Wavelengths

In this paper we briefly review three topics that have motivated our (and others') investigations in recent years within the context of evolutionary population synthesis techniques. These are: The origin of the FUV up-turn in elliptical galaxies, the age-metallicity degeneracy, and the study of the mid-UV rest-frame spectra of distant red galaxies. We summarize some of our results and present a very preliminary application of a UV grid of theoretical spectra in the analysis of integrated properties of aged stellar populations. At the end, we concisely suggest how these topics can be tackled once the World Space Observatory enters into operation in the midst of this decade.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Science, UV Universe special issu
