Microwave power transmission system studies. Volume 2: Introduction, organization, environmental and spaceborne systems analyses
Introduction, organization, analyses, conclusions, and recommendations for each of the spaceborne subsystems are presented. Environmental effects - propagation analyses are presented with appendices covering radio wave diffraction by random ionospheric irregularities, self-focusing plasma instabilities and ohmic heating of the D-region. Analyses of dc to rf conversion subsystems and system considerations for both the amplitron and the klystron are included with appendices for the klystron covering cavity circuit calculations, output power of the solenoid-focused klystron, thermal control system, and confined flow focusing of a relativistic beam. The photovoltaic power source characteristics are discussed as they apply to interfacing with the power distribution flow paths, magnetic field interaction, dc to rf converter protection, power distribution including estimates for the power budget, weights, and costs. Analyses for the transmitting antenna consider the aperture illumination and size, with associated efficiencies and ground power distributions. Analyses of subarray types and dimensions, attitude error, flatness, phase error, subarray layout, frequency tolerance, attenuation, waveguide dimensional tolerances, mechanical including thermal considerations are included. Implications associated with transportation, assembly and packaging, attitude control and alignment are discussed. The phase front control subsystem, including both ground based pilot signal driven adaptive and ground command approaches with their associated phase errors, are analyzed
Microwave Power Transmission System Studies. Volume 1: Executive Summary
A study of microwave power generation, transmission, reception and control was conducted as a part of a program to demonstrate the feasibility of power transmission from geosynchronous orbit. A summary is presented of results concerning design approaches, estimated costs (ROM), critical technology, associated ground and orbital test programs with emphasis on dc to rf conversion, transmitting antenna, phase control, mechanical systems, flight operations, ground power receiving-rectifying antenna with systems analysis, and evaluation. Recommendations for early further in-depth studies complementing the technology program are included
Methods of producing new nutrient data for popularly consumed multi ethnic foods in the UK
Minority ethnic groups in UK disproportionately suffer from nutrition related diseases compared to the mainstream population, contributing to widening health inequalities. However, reliable nutrient composition data of the traditional foods of these ethnic groups, which play an important part in their diets, is lacking. This makes it impossible to provide adequate and culturally acceptable nutrition interventions to reduce prevalent metabolic disorders. This study aimed to identify and analyse popularly consumed African and Caribbean foods in the UK for macro and micronutrients. Various approaches including focus group discussions, individual interviews and 24 hr dietary recalls were used to identify traditional foods. Defined criteria were used to prioritise and prepare 33 composite samples (26 dishes, 4 snacks and 3 beverages) for nutrient analyses in a UK accredited laboratory. This study methodology is novel because it uses various approaches to generate new data of commonly consumed ethnic foods and traditional recipes. In addition, the approach used in preparation of the food samples enhanced their authenticity and representativeness compared to previously published work. This paper describes the procedures undertaken and analytical methods used to develop a multi ethnic nutrient data for inclusion in UK food composition tables
Lattice QCD with mixed actions
We discuss some of the implications of simulating QCD when the action used
for the sea quarks is different from that used for the valence quarks. We
present exploratory results for the hadron mass spectrum and pseudoscalar meson
decay constants using improved staggered sea quarks and HYP-smeared overlap
valence quarks. We propose a method for matching the valence quark mass to the
sea quark mass and demonstrate it on UKQCD clover data in the simpler case
where the sea and valence actions are the same.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures some minor modification to text and figures.

Error Thresholds on Dynamic Fittness-Landscapes
In this paper we investigate error-thresholds on dynamics fitness-landscapes.
We show that there exists both lower and an upper threshold, representing
limits to the copying fidelity of simple replicators. The lower bound can be
expressed as a correction term to the error-threshold present on a static
landscape. The upper error-threshold is a new limit that only exists on dynamic
fitness-landscapes. We also show that for long genomes on highly dynamic
fitness-landscapes there exists a lower bound on the selection pressure needed
to enable effective selection of genomes with superior fitness independent of
mutation rates, i.e., there are distinct limits to the evolutionary parameters
in dynamic environments.Comment: 5 page
Competing associations in six-species predator-prey models
We study a set of six-species ecological models where each species has two
predators and two preys. On a square lattice the time evolution is governed by
iterated invasions between the neighboring predator-prey pairs chosen at random
and by a site exchange with a probability Xs between the neutral pairs. These
models involve the possibility of spontaneous formation of different defensive
alliances whose members protect each other from the external invaders. The
Monte Carlo simulations show a surprisingly rich variety of the stable spatial
distributions of species and subsequent phase transitions when tuning the
control parameter Xs. These very simple models are able to demonstrate that the
competition between these associations influences their composition. Sometimes
the dominant association is developed via a domain growth. In other cases
larger and larger invasion processes preceed the prevalence of one of the
stable asociations. Under some conditions the survival of all the species can
be maintained by the cyclic dominance occuring between these associations.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Decision for reconstructive interventions of the upper limb in individuals with tetraplegia: the effect of treatment characteristics
Objective: To determine the effect of treatment characteristics on the\ud
decision for reconstructive interventions for the upper extremities (UE) in\ud
subjects with tetraplegia. - \ud
Setting: Seven specialized spinal cord injury centres in the Netherlands. - \ud
Method: Treatment characteristics for UE reconstructive interventions were\ud
determined. Conjoint analysis (CA) was used to determine the contribution\ud
and the relative importance of the treatment characteristics on the decision\ud
for therapy. Therefore, a number of different treatment scenarios using these\ud
characteristics were established. Different pairs of scenarios were presented\ud
to subjects who were asked to choose the preferred scenario of each set. - \ud
Results: forty nine subjects with tetraplegia with a stable C5, C6 or C7\ud
lesion were selected. All treatment characteristics significantly influenced\ud
the choice for treatment. Relative importance of treatment characteristics\ud
were: intervention type (surgery or surgery with FES implant) 13%, number\ud
of operations 15%, in patient rehabilitation period 22%, ambulant\ud
rehabilitation period 9%, complication rate 15%, improvement of elbow\ud
function 10%, improvement of hand function 15%. In deciding for therapy\ud
40% of the subjects focused on one characteristic. - \ud
Conclusion: CA is applicable in Spinal Cord Injury medicine to study the\ud
effect of health outcomes and non-health outcomes on the decision for\ud
treatment. Non-health outcomes which relate to the intensity of treatment\ud
are equally important or even more important than functional outcome in the\ud
decision for reconstructive UE surgery in subjects with tetraplegia
The Frequency Dependence of Critical-velocity Behavior in Oscillatory Flow of Superfluid Helium-4 Through a 2-micrometer by 2-micrometer Aperture in a Thin Foil
The critical-velocity behavior of oscillatory superfluid Helium-4 flow
through a 2-micrometer by 2-micrometer aperture in a 0.1-micrometer-thick foil
has been studied from 0.36 K to 2.10 K at frequencies from less than 50 Hz up
to above 1880 Hz. The pressure remained less than 0.5 bar. In early runs during
which the frequency remained below 400 Hz, the critical velocity was a
nearly-linearly decreasing function of increasing temperature throughout the
region of temperature studied. In runs at the lowest frequencies, isolated 2 Pi
phase slips could be observed at the onset of dissipation. In runs with
frequencies higher than 400 Hz, downward curvature was observed in the decrease
of critical velocity with increasing temperature. In addition, above 500 Hz an
alteration in supercritical behavior was seen at the lower temperatures,
involving the appearance of large energy-loss events. These irregular events
typically lasted a few tens of half-cycles of oscillation and could involve
hundreds of times more energy loss than would have occurred in a single
complete 2 Pi phase slip at maximum flow. The temperatures at which this
altered behavior was observed rose with frequency, from ~ 0.6 K and below, at
500 Hz, to ~ 1.0 K and below, at 1880 Hz.Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures, prequel to cond-mat/050203
Plasma density profile reconstruction of a gas cell for Ionization Induced Laser Wakefield Acceleration
Laser-driven plasma wakefields can provide hundreds of MeV electron beam in
mm-range distances potentially shrinking the dimension of the actual particle
accelerators. The plasma density plays a fundamental role in the control and
stability of the acceleration process, which is a key development for the
future electron injector proposed by EuPRAXIA. A gas cell was designed by LPGP
and LIDYL teams, with variable length and backing pressure, to confine the gas
and tailor the gas density profile before the arrival of the laser. This cell
was used during an experimental campaign with the multi TW-class laser at the
Lund Laser Centre. Ionization assisted injection in a tailored density profile
is used to tune the electron beam properties. During the experiment, we filled
the gas cell with hydrogen mixed with different concentration of nitrogen. We
also varied the backing pressure of the gas and the geometrical length of the
gas cell. We used a transverse probe to acquire shadowgraphic images of the
plasma and to measure the plasma electron density. Methods and results of the
analysis with comparisons between shadowgraphic and interferometric images will
be discussed
