Spectral properties of zero temperature dynamics in a model of a compacting granular column
The compacting of a column of grains has been studied using a one-dimensional
Ising model with long range directed interactions in which down and up spins
represent orientations of the grain having or not having an associated void.
When the column is not shaken (zero 'temperature') the motion becomes highly
constrained and under most circumstances we find that the generator of the
stochastic dynamics assumes an unusual form: many eigenvalues become
degenerate, but the associated multi-dimensional invariant spaces have but a
single eigenvector. There is no spectral expansion and a Jordan form must be
used. Many properties of the dynamics are established here analytically; some
are not. General issues associated with the Jordan form are also taken up.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures, 3 table
Actualidad y futuro de un programa de mejora en el ganado vacuno de raza retinta
We describe the present process of genetic improvement in Retinto cattle breed and the investigations supporting the selection program. The effects of different environmental factors have been analyzed. We have obtained the coefficients of correction for the significant effects for the repeatability of the variables and for the inbreeding coefficients. Also improvement plans are proposed.Se describen el proceso de mejora genética en ganado vacuno Retinto y los trabajos de investigación para proporcionar bases científicas al programa de selección. Se han analizado los efectos de distintas variables ambientales y obtenido coeficientes de corrección para los efectos significativos, la repetibilidades de los distintas variables y los coeficientes de consanguinidad para las poblaciones. Así mismo se proponen acciones de mejora para el futuro
Productive characterization of the Retinto beef cattle
We have studied 1863 animals, including males, females and offsprings, from the Retinto breed of cattle, belonging to different farmers in the Cadiz province. The effect of birth type, offspring sex, month of the birth, type of reproduction (artificial or natural insemination), age of the female and year of control, on weight and daily gains have been analyzed. These data can be used to characterize this breed.Se estudian 1863 animales de raza vacuna Retinta, entre crías madres y sementales, pertenecientes a ganaderías de la provincia de Cádiz, para inferir los efectos sobre pesos y ganancias diarias, del tipo de parto, el sexo del producto, mes de nacimiento, tipo de reproducción (I.A. o monta natural), edad de la madre, y año de control y contar asimismo con datos que permitan caracterizar la raza y fijar sus límites de fluctuación
Trust and control interrelations: New perspectives on the trust control nexus

Trust and control are interlinked processes commonly seen as key to reach effectiveness in inter- and intraorganizational relations. The relation between trust and control is, however, a complex one, and research into this relation has given rise to various and contradictory interpretations of how trust and control relate. A well-known discussion is directed at whether trust and control are better conceived as substitutes, or as complementary mechanisms of governance. The articles in this special issue bring the discussion on the relationship between both concepts a step further by identifying common factors, distinctive mechanisms, and key implications relevant for theory building and empirical research. By studying trust and control through different perspectives and at different levels of analysis, the articles provide new theoretical insights and empirical evidence on the foundations of the trust-control interrelations
Eta-Helium Quasi-Bound States
The cross section and tensor analysing power t_20 of the d\vec{d}->eta 4He
reaction have been measured at six c.m. momenta, 10 < p(eta) < 90 MeV/c. The
threshold value of t_20 is consistent with 1/\sqrt{2}, which follows from
parity conservation and Bose symmetry. The much slower momentum variation
observed for the reaction amplitude, as compared to that for the analogous
pd->eta 3He case, suggests strongly the existence of a quasi-bound state in the
eta-4He system and optical model fits indicate that this probably also the case

Randomly dilute Ising model: A nonperturbative approach
The N-vector cubic model relevant, among others, to the physics of the
randomly dilute Ising model is analyzed in arbitrary dimension by means of an
exact renormalization-group equation. This study provides a unified picture of
its critical physics between two and four dimensions. We give the critical
exponents for the three-dimensional randomly dilute Ising model which are in
good agreement with experimental and numerical data. The relevance of the cubic

The future of social is personal: the potential of the personal data store
This chapter argues that technical architectures that facilitate the longitudinal, decentralised and individual-centric personal collection and curation of data will be an important, but partial, response to the pressing problem of the autonomy of the data subject, and the asymmetry of power between the subject and large scale service providers/data consumers. Towards framing the scope and role of such Personal Data Stores (PDSes), the legalistic notion of personal data is examined, and it is argued that a more inclusive, intuitive notion expresses more accurately what individuals require in order to preserve their autonomy in a data-driven world of large aggregators. Six challenges towards realising the PDS vision are set out: the requirement to store data for long periods; the difficulties of managing data for individuals; the need to reconsider the regulatory basis for third-party access to data; the need to comply with international data handling standards; the need to integrate privacy-enhancing technologies; and the need to future-proof data gathering against the evolution of social norms. The open experimental PDS platform INDX is introduced and described, as a means of beginning to address at least some of these six challenges
Increased recombinant adeno‐associated virus production by HEK293 cells using small molecule chemical additives
Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) has established itself as a highly efficacious gene delivery vector with a well characterised safety profile allowing broad clinical application. Recent successes in rAAV-mediated gene therapy clinical trials will continue to drive demand for improved rAAV production processes to reduce costs. Here, we demonstrate that small molecule bioactive chemical additives can significantly increase recombinant AAV vector production by human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells up to three-fold. Nocodazole (an anti-mitotic agent) and M344 (a selective histone deacetylase inhibitor) were identified as positive regulators of rAAV8 genome titre in a microplate screening assay. Addition of nocodazole to triple-transfected HEK293 suspension cells producing rAAV arrested cells in G2/M phase, increased average cell volume and reduced viable cell density relative to untreated rAAV producing cells at harvest. Final crude genome vector titre from nocodazole treated cultures was >2-fold higher compared to non-treated cultures. Further investigation showed nocodazole addition to cultures to be time critical. Genome titre improvement was found to be scalable and serotype independent across two distinct rAAV serotypes, rAAV8 and rAAV9. Furthermore, a combination of M344 and nocodazole produced a positive additive effect on rAAV8 genome titre, resulting in a three-fold increase in genome titre compared to untreated cells
Photo-induced second-order nonlinearity in stoichiometric silicon nitride waveguides
We report the observation of second-harmonic generation in stoichiometric
silicon nitride waveguides grown via low-pressure chemical vapour deposition.
Quasi-rectangular waveguides with a large cross section were used, with a
height of 1 {\mu}m and various different widths, from 0.6 to 1.2 {\mu}m, and
with various lengths from 22 to 74 mm. Using a mode-locked laser delivering
6-ps pulses at 1064 nm wavelength with a repetition rate of 20 MHz, 15% of the
incoming power was coupled through the waveguide, making maximum average powers
of up to 15 mW available in the waveguide. Second-harmonic output was observed
with a delay of minutes to several hours after the initial turn-on of pump
radiation, showing a fast growth rate between 10 to 10 s,
with the shortest delay and highest growth rate at the highest input power.
After this first, initial build-up, the second-harmonic became generated
instantly with each new turn-on of the pump laser power. Phase matching was
found to be present independent of the used waveguide width, although the
latter changes the fundamental and second-harmonic phase velocities. We address
the presence of a second-order nonlinearity and phase matching, involving an
initial, power-dependent build-up, to the coherent photogalvanic effect. The
effect, via the third-order nonlinearity and multiphoton absorption leads to a
spatially patterned charge separation, which generates a spatially periodic,
semi-permanent, DC-field-induced second-order susceptibility with a period that
is appropriate for quasi-phase matching. The maximum measured second-harmonic
conversion efficiency amounts to 0.4% in a waveguide with 0.9 x 1 {\mu}m
cross section and 36 mm length, corresponding to 53 {\mu}W at 532 nm with 13 mW
of IR input coupled into the waveguide. The according amounts to
