    Plant community ecology of a major subtropical riverine floodplain

    This project described the vegetation of a stretch of the Parana River and investigated which natural or human-imposed factors might be controlling its characteristics, its capacity for biodiversity support and its potential to provide an economic resource. This information is of value in the planning of management strategies aiming to conserve biodiversity and develop sustainable ways in which the floodplain resources can be utilised. Central to this study were the surveys of vegetation and environmental characteristics of aquatic, terrestrial and transitional habitats of the Parana floodplain near Porto Rico. These produced extensive data sets which helped to reveal the types of vegetation-environment relationships structuring the floodplain plant communities. To complement this investigative approach, three aspects of the functioning of floodplain vegetation were chosen for closer study. These were the impacts of livestock grazing on wetland and island vegetation, competitive interactions between pairs of free-floating aquatic plant species and the role of aquatic macrophytes in contributing carbon to aquatic food webs. Three major community types were identified in the aquatic habitats of the floodplain, one which included Eichhornia azurea in mixture with several free-floating and emergent species, a second in which E. azurea was strongly dominant and a third comprised purely of submerged species. Two strongly contrasting broad vegetation communities were identified at bank and shore environments. Polygonum and Ludwigia species were important in one group and Poaceae, creepers, woody plants and ferns in the other group. Sub-groups of these communities could also be suggested, but these are less distinct. Most of the floodplain sites supported a Poaceae-creeper community type with the remaining sites supporting a community indicated by Polygonum species. The Poaceae group was comprised of a number of sub-communities in which the importance of Poaceae relative to other species varied. The aquatic vegetation communities differed structurally with contrasting community biomass, canopy height, canopy cover, species richness and stem density. They were associated with waterbodies with different water depth and pH and different sediment nitrogen and phosphorus contents. Water flow rate category and underwent light availability also differed between the sites that tended to support the different vegetation types. The two major bank and shore vegetation communities differed in canopy cover, in the soil nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium levels with which they were associated and in the steepness of the bank on which they tended to grow. A literature review identifies the traditional communications conventions pre-state sector reform and a survey of state sector communications managers reveals the conflict between this traditional approach as it is articulated, and actual practice in the post-state sector reform environment. A new convention is presented based on three divisions within the core public service: primarily policy; primarily operational; and mixed objective. Communications conventions for state-owned enterprises, Crown entities and Crown research institutes are also identified

    125 P.La presente tesis realiza la descripción de la realidad de los estudiantes del Liceo Politécnico Ireneo Badilla de Linares al aplicar sesiones en las clases de música con la pedagogía dialógica. Así mismo, busca mostrar los principales efectos en los estudiantes. Está guiada en el enfoque cualitativo ya que busca recopilar datos descriptivos, es decir, las propias palabras de las personas y su conducta desde un punto de vista subjetivo. La investigación realizada fue descriptiva pues el objetivo del estudio es conocer los efectos de las intervenciones dentro de la clase de música con la pedagogía dialógica a los estudiantes del liceo Politécnico Ireneo Badilla de Linares del curso primero Medio “A” y “D” de Linares. Los instrumentos de recolección de información fueron entrevistas semiestructuradas, focus group y observación participante, las cuales fueron aplicadas a 16 estudiantes en total.Se encontró información relevante formular los resultados que nos muestran que este enfoque pedagógico es eficaz y puede ser aplicado dentro de la realidad educativa nacional pues los estudiantes mostraron cambios positivos en su conducta.     Protocols and pitfalls in obtaining fatty acid-binding proteins for biophysical studies of ligand-protein and protein-protein interactions

    Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (AFABP: FABP4) is a member of the intracellular lipid-binding protein family that is thought to target long-chain fatty acids to nuclear receptors such as peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor gamma (PPARγ), which in turn plays roles in insulin resistance and obesity. A molecular understanding of AFABP function requires robust isolation of the protein in liganded and free forms as well as characterization of its oligomerization state(s) under physiological conditions. We report development of a protocol to optimize the production of members of this protein family in pure form, including removal of their bound lipids by mixing with hydrophobically functionalized hydroxypropyl dextran beads and validation by two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The formation of self-associated or covalently bonded protein dimers was evaluated critically using gel filtration chromatography, revealing conditions that promote or prevent formation of disulfide-linked homodimers. The resulting scheme provides a solid foundation for future investigations of AFABP interactions with key ligand and protein partners involved in lipid metabolism

Drawing on data gathered in the European Commission, the findings show the processes linking high-level rhetorical policy statements, strategic policies, and daily working practices. This analysis enables exploration of the mechanisms through which indifference to and nonawareness of gendered policy problems are collectively constituted and methods through which they can be challenged. Findings thus deepen our understanding of barriers to the implementation of gender mainstreaming and the steps required for its effective implementation.20 juli 201

    The supramolecular chemistry of gold and l-cysteine: Formation of photoluminescent, orange-emitting assemblies with multilayer structure

    The protein mediated approach is a common method for the synthesis of photoluminescent gold quantum clusters (GQCs), where proteins, acting as reducing and stabilizing agents, react with gold salts through cysteine residues. For the better understanding of the phenomenon, the aqueous phase reaction of HAuCl_4 and L-cysteine has been investigated at the supramolecular level by various experimental techniques and molecular mechanics simulations. We have observed the formation of a novel photoluminescent product, (AuCys)_n^β, which shows emission in the orange region of the spectrum. Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) measurements have revealed the presence of nanosized lamellae, which have an internal multilayer superlattice structure with a characteristic periodic distance of 1.3 nm. Based on the results, the layers are built up by zigzag shaped (AuCys)_n polymer chains connected through aurophilic bonds. The aurophilic network is stabilized via salt bridges and hydrogen bonds, which are also responsible for the interlayer interactions. Here, the evolution of the multilayer structure has been monitored by the combined application of photoluminescence spectroscopy and time-resolved SAXS. It has been concluded that there is a strong correlation between the emission and the scattering intensity, which suggests that the two- and three-dimensional aggregation of the building blocks to form sheets and multilayers are simultaneous processes. Furthermore, we have revealed that the formation and behavior of (AuCys)_n^β show significant differences to that of Au-L-glutathione compounds desrcibed earlier despite the similarity of L-cysteine and L-glutathione. These results evidence that L-cysteine and gold species form building blocks that can be applied expansively in supramolecular and cluster chemistry

    Abundances in Stars from the Red Giant Branch Tip to the Near Main Sequence in M71: II. Iron Abundance

    We present [Ffe/H] abundance results that involve a sample of stars with a wide range in luminosity from luminous giants to stars near the turnoff in a globular cluster. Our sample of 25 stars in M71 includes 10 giant stars more luminous than the RHB, 3 horizontal branch stars, 9 giant stars less luminous than the RHB, and 3 stars near the turnoff. We analyzed both Fe I and Fe II lines in high dispersion spectra observed with HIRES at the W. M. Keck Observatory. We find that the [Fe/H] abundances from both Fe I and Fe II lines agree with each other and with earlier determinations. Also the [Fe/H] obtained from Fe I and Fe II lines is constant within the rather small uncertainties for this group of stars over the full range in Teff and luminosity, suggesting that NLTE effects are negligible in our iron abundance determination. In this globular cluster, there is no difference among the mean [Fe/H] of giant stars located at or above the RHB, RHB stars, giant stars located below the RHB and stars near the turnoff.Comment: Minor changes to conform to version accepted for publication, with several new figures (Paper 2 of a pair
