Possible X-ray diagnostic for jet/disk dominance in Type 1 AGN
Using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Seyfert 1 and 1.2 data spanning 9 years, we
study correlations between X-ray spectral features. The sample consists of 350
time-resolved spectra from 12 Seyfert 1 and 1.2 galaxies. Each spectrum is
fitted to a model with an intrinsic powerlaw X-ray spectrum produced close to
the central black hole that is reprocessed and absorbed by material around the
black hole. To test the robustness of our results, we performed Monte Carlo
simulations of the spectral sample. We find a complex relationship between the
iron line equivalent width (EW) and the underlying power law index (Gamma). The
data reveal a correlation between Gamma and EW which turns over at Gamma <~ 2,
but finds a weak anti-correlation for steeper photon indices. We propose that
this relationship is driven by dilution of a disk spectrum (which includes the
narrow iron line) by a beamed jet component and, hence, could be used as a
diagnostic of jet-dominance. In addition, our sample shows a strong correlation
between the reflection fraction (R) and Gamma, but we find that it is likely
the result of modeling degeneracies. We also see the X-ray Baldwin effect (an
anti-correlation between the 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity and EW) for the sample
as a whole, but not for the individual galaxies and galaxy types.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 14 page
Analysis of chicken fat as adulterant in butter using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics
Butter may be adulterated with cheaper animal fats, such as chicken fat (CF). Thus, the detection and quantification of butter adulteration with CF was monitored using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, combined with chemometric of partial least square (PLS) at the frequency regions of 1200-1000cm–1. FTIR measurements were made on pure butter and that adulterated with varying concentrations of CF (0-100% w/w in butter). PLS calibration exhibits a good relationship between actual and FTIR predicted values of CF with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.981. The root means standard error of calibration (RMSEC) and during cross validation (RMSECV) obtained using six principal components (PCs) are 2.08 and 4.33% v/v, respectively.<br><br>La mantequilla puede ser adulterada con grasas animales más baratas, como la grasa de pollo (GP). Shadowing Ministers: Monitoring Partners in Coalition Governments
In this article the authors study delegation problems within multiparty coalition
governments. They argue that coalition parties can use the committee system to
“shadow” the ministers of their partners; that is, they can appoint committee
chairs from other governing parties, who will then be well placed to monitor
and/or check the actions of the corresponding ministers. The authors
analyze which ministers should be shadowed if governing parties seek to
minimize the aggregate policy losses they suffer as the result of ministers pursuing
their own parties’ interests rather than the coalition’s. Based on data
from 19 mostly European parliamentary democracies, the authors find that the
greater the policy disagreement between a minister’s party and its partners,
the more likely the minister is to be shadowed
Classical limit in terms of symbolic dynamics for the quantum baker's map
We derive a simple closed form for the matrix elements of the quantum baker's
map that shows that the map is an approximate shift in a symbolic
representation based on discrete phase space. We use this result to give a
formal proof that the quantum baker's map approaches a classical Bernoulli

Confirmation of the Double Charm Baryon Xi_cc+ via its Decay to p D+ K-
We observes a signal for the double charm baryon Xi_cc+ in the charged decay
mode Xi_cc+ -> p D+ K- to complement the previously reported decay Xi_cc+ ->
Lambda_c K- pi+ in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production experiment
(E781) at Fermilab. In this new decay mode we observe an excess of 5.62 events
over an expected background estimated by event mixing to be 1.38+/-0.13 events.
The Poisson probability that a background fluctuation can produce the apparent
signal is less than 6.4E-4. The observed mass of this state is
(3518+/-3)MeV/c^2, consistent with the published result. Averaging the two
results gives a mass of (3518.7+/-1.7)MeV/c^2. The observation of this new weak
decay mode confirms the previous SELEX suggestion that this state is a double
charm baryon. The relative branching ratio Gamma(Xi_cc+ -> pD+K-)/Gamma(Xi_cc+
-> Lambda_c K- pi+) = 0.36+/-0.21.Comment: 11 pages, 6 included eps figures. v2 includes improved statistical

First Measurement of pi e -> pi e gamma Pion Virtual Compton Scattering
Pion Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) via the reaction pi e --> pi e gamma
was observed in the Fermilab E781 SELEX experiment. SELEX used a 600 GeV/c pi-
beam incident on target atomic electrons, detecting the incident pi- and the
final state pi-, electron and gamma. Theoretical predictions based on chiral
perturbation theory are incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation of the
experiment and are compared to the data. The number of reconstructed events (9)
and their distribution with respect to the kinematic variables (for the
kinematic region studied) are in reasonable accord with the predictions. The
corresponding pi- VCS experimental cross section is sigma=38.8+-13 nb, in

Benefits and risks of the hormetic effects of dietary isothiocyanates on cancer prevention
The isothiocyanate (ITC) sulforaphane (SFN) was shown at low levels (1-5 µM) to promote cell proliferation to 120-143% of the controls in a number of human cell lines, whilst at high levels (10-40 µM) it inhibited such cell proliferation. Similar dose responses were observed for cell migration, i.e. SFN at 2.5 µM increased cell migration in bladder cancer T24 cells to 128% whilst high levels inhibited cell migration. This hormetic action was also found in an angiogenesis assay where SFN at 2.5 µM promoted endothelial tube formation (118% of the control), whereas at 10-20 µM it caused significant inhibition. The precise mechanism by which SFN influences promotion of cell growth and migration is not known, but probably involves activation of autophagy since an autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine, abolished the effect of SFN on cell migration. Moreover, low doses of SFN offered a protective effect against free-radical mediated cell death, an effect that was enhanced by co-treatment with selenium. These results suggest that SFN may either prevent or promote tumour cell growth depending on the dose and the nature of the target cells. In normal cells, the promotion of cell growth may be of benefit, but in transformed or cancer cells it may be an undesirable risk factor. In summary, ITCs have a biphasic effect on cell growth and migration. The benefits and risks of ITCs are not only determined by the doses, but are affected by interactions with Se and the measured endpoint
First observation of a narrow charm-strange meson DsJ(2632) -> Ds eta and D0 K+
We report the first observation of a charm-strange meson DsJ(2632) at a mass
of 2632.6+/-1.6 MeV/c^2 in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production
experiment E781 at Fermilab. This state is seen in two decay modes, Ds eta and
D0 K+. In the Ds eta decay mode we observe an excess of 49.3 events with a
significance of 7.2sigma at a mass of 2635.9+/-2.9 MeV/c^2. There is a
corresponding peak of 14 events with a significance of 5.3sigma at 2631.5+/-1.9
MeV/c^2 in the decay mode D0 K+. The decay width of this state is <17 MeV/c^2
at 90% confidence level. The relative branching ratio Gamma(D0K+)/Gamma(Dseta)
is 0.16+/-0.06. The mechanism which keeps this state narrow is unclear. Its
decay pattern is also unusual, being dominated by the Ds eta decay mode.Comment: 5 pages, 3 included eps figures. v2 as accepted for publication by
