An unpublished interview with Paulo Freire: radical pedagogy & social transformation

    Get PDF
Pulling together the inedited works by Paulo Freire in the XXI century shows us how his works are up-to-date with current issues in the field. Most of his works have been disseminated all over the World, as those of the greatest educator of all times; however, his simplicity and outspoken voice is unique and cannot be reproduce in a simple manner. This is possibly why many writers use his citations, instead of paraphrasing his writings. Therefore, this paper represents another attempt to focus on his own voice and perspective on some of the questions raised by students three decades ago, that had never reach a broad audience but are nevertheless still in the minds of many students who are today interested in his work. The paper presents a short unpublished interview with Freire in 1988, when he talks about theoretical affiliation, critiques and the objectives of his works. In a conversation format the interview is a re-encounter between Paulo Freire and his former student Carmen de Mattos

    Curatorial Incubator [v.14]

As befits our newly renovated space on the 4th floor of the iconic 401 Richmond heritage building, we took a different approach to this year’s annual curatorial mentoring project. Early in 2016, two emerging curators – Claudia Mattos, then working with Performa in New York, and Noor Alé, working at the National Gallery of Canada - approached us enthusiastically with a request to put together a program loosely based on ideas of the body and migration. [...] Working with their stated interests, Alé and Mattos went on to develop a theme they felt was relevant for these politically tense times. The program they proposed is drawn from the holdings at Vtape and takes its name from the eponymous 1997 documentary by Lebanese artist Akram Zaatari. To acknowledge this inspiration, we have decided to screen this work just prior to their program." -- p. 1

The present paper studies the internal decoration of the Museu Paulista, created and implemented by Affonso D'Escagnolle Taunay during his term as a director of that institution, trying to understand the strategies he used to translate his theoretical convictions into a convincing visual language. The author also analyses the relations of Taunay's proposed decorative project with the vast tradition of European decorative cycles and, more specifically, with the projects of the construction of a national identity through painting, which was defended by some artists who had a certain relation with the Fine-Arts Academy during the 19th century.O presente artigo analisa a decoraçÃo interna do Museu Paulista, criada e implementada por Affonso d'Escagnolle Taunay durante sua gestÃo como diretor daquela instituiçÃo, procurando compreender as estratégias utilizadas por ele para traduzir suas convicções teóricas em uma linguagem visual convincente.

The present article discusses Winckelann’s relations to the artistic environment in Rome during in mid-Eighteenth Century. Although most of the scholarly work on Winckelmann focusses on his aesthetic theory, he was also a centralfigure of the Roman art world, interacting lively with many renowned artists of the time, such as Anton Raphael Mengs, Charles-Louis Clérisseau, Gavin Hamilton, Johannes Wiedewelt, among many others. The present article intends to examine some of these interactions considering it as animportantfactor, both in the development of Winckelmann’s writings after he arrived in Italy, and in the foundation of a neoclassical idealthat would spread throughout Europe in the last decades of the 18th Century

Dementia screening in Brazil: a systematic review of normative data for the mini-mental state examination

    Get PDF
The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is the most widely used instrument for the screening of older adults with suspected cognitive impairment; the MMSE has been translated and validated in numerous languages and countries. The cultural and sociodemographic characteristics of the sample can influence performance on the test; therefore, applying the MMSE in different populations usually requires adjustments of those variables. From this perspective, the present study aims to review the normative data for the MMSE in the Brazilian older population, including those adaptations to the original test. Database searches were performed in Medline, Web of Knowledge, Scielo and Pepsic for articles assessing healthy elderly Brazilian samples using the MMSE. Heterogeneity across and within the studies was analyzed. Of a total of 1,085 retrieved articles, 14 were included. Significant differences across studies were identified for the characteristics of the samples, the presence of alterations to the MMSE subtests and the presentation of the results. The risk of biases was relevant for all the studies. Considering the large methodological heterogeneity among studies, the generalization of the available normative data for the MMSE may not be appropriate for the general elderly Brazilian population

Application of the Kushida morphometric model in patients with sleep-disordered breathing

The morphometric model is a useful screening test to investigate the possibility of OSAS in patients during initial office visits. AIM: To evaluate the clinical applicability of the Kushida morphometric model in a sample of patients with sleep-disordered breathing, and to define a cutoff value to differentiate patients with mild, moderate and severe apnea. METHOD: A sample of 80 patients with sleep respisratory disorder was studied. Patients were aged between 18 and 75 years, of both genders and had been submitted previously to polysomnography. The model cutoff value to distinguish between patients with or without apnea is 70. RESULTS: In this sample, the model cutoff value in all four groups was less than 70. It was impossible to establish a cutoff value according to the gravity of the condition, due to the proximity and the nonlinear increase in the values presented by the nonapneic group and those with mild and moderate apnea. CONCLUSION: The Kushida morphometric model can be applied in clinical practice to a selected sample and it was impossible to establish a cutoff value to separate patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome according to severity.O modelo proposto serve para triar os pacientes com alto risco para síndrome da apnéia e hipopnéia obstrutiva do sono.
