    Validity of the activPAL3 activity monitor in people moderately affected by Multiple Sclerosis

    Background: Walking is the primary form of physical activity performed by people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), therefore it is important to ensure the validity of tools employed to measure walking activity. The aim of this study was to assess the criterion validity of the activPAL3 activity monitor during overground walking in people with MS.\ud Methods: Validity of the activPAL3 accelerometer was compared to video observation in 20 people moderately affected by MS. Participants walked 20-30m twice along a straight quiet corridor at a comfortable speed.\ud Results: Inter-rater reliability of video observations was excellent (all intraclass correlations > 0.99). The mean difference (activPAL3- mean of raters) was -4.70 ± 9.09, -4.55 s ± 10.76 and 1.11 s ± 1.11 for steps taken, walking duration and upright duration respectively. These differences represented 8.7, 10.0 and 1.8% of the mean for each measure respectively. The activPAL3 tended to underestimate steps taken and walking duration in those who walked at cadences of ≤ 38 steps/minute by 60% and 47% respectively.\ud Discussion: The activPAL3 is valid for measuring walking activity in people moderately affected by MS. It is accurate for upright duration regardless of cadence. In participants with slow walking cadences, outcomes of steps taken and walking duration should be interpreted with caution

    To whom does a professional owe a duty of care when providing professional services?1 The traditional answer, grounded in principles of contractual privity, is that professionals are liable for negligence to their clients, and perhaps to third-party beneficiaries of the client-professional relationship, but that their noncontractual obligations generally extend no further than a duty not to commit fraud.2 In the past two decades, however, courts have become increasingly willing to hold a wide range of professionals liable for their negligence to parties outside the chain of privity. 3 The accompanying growth of third-party4 lawsuits alleging professional negligence and in particular alleging negligent misrepresentation by accountants or attorneys, raises serious questions for professionals concerning their legal and ethical obligations to nonclients

    Characterization of the Soluble Nanoparticles Formed through Coulombic Interaction of Bovine Serum Albumin with Anionic Graft Copolymers at Low pH

    A static light scattering (SLS) study of bovine serum albumin (BSA) mixtures with two anionic graft copolymers of poly (sodium acrylate-co-sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulphonate)-graft-poly (N, N-dimethylacrylamide), with a high composition in poly (N, N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAM) side chains, revealed the formation of oppositely charged complexes, at pH lower than 4.9, the isoelectric point of BSA. The core-corona nanoparticles formed at pH = 3.00, were characterized. Their molecular weight and radius of gyration were determined by SLS, while their hydrodynamic radius was determined by dynamic light scattering. Small angle neutron scattering measurements were used to determine the radius of the insoluble complexes, comprising the core of the particles. The values obtained indicated that their size and aggregation number of the nanoparticles, were smaller when the content of the graft copolymers in neutral PDMAM side chains was higher. Such particles should be interesting drug delivery candidates, if the gastrointestinal tract was to be used

    Drug Use as Boundary Play: A Qualitative Exploration of Gay Circuit Parties

    Research findings have revealed that gay circuit parties may be locations that are disproportionately responsible for the increasing rates of many STIs/HIV among gay/bisexual men. Theories have been put forth that this may be the case because circuit parties are locales of prevalent drug use and unsafe sex. To explore the relationship between these two phenomena, in-depth qualitative interviews were undertaken with 17 men who (1) have sex with other men, (2) attended gay circuit parties in Montréal, Canada, in 2007. These revealed that drugs (including alcohol) were used intentionally to engage in unsafe sex, and then to justify this behavior after the fact. This process we called boundary play

    Using Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses to Support Regulatory Decision Making for Neurotoxicants: Lessons Learned from a Case Study of PCBs

    We examined prospective cohort studies evaluating the relation between prenatal and neonatal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and neurodevelopment in children to assess the feasibility of conducting a meta-analysis to support decision making. We described studies in terms of exposure and end point categorization, statistical analysis, and reporting of results. We used this evaluation to assess the feasibility of grouping studies into reasonably uniform categories. The most consistently used tests included Brazelton's Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, the neurologic optimality score in the neonatal period, the Bayley Scales of Infant Development at 5-8months of age, and the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities in 5-year-olds. Despite administering the same tests at similar ages, the studies were too dissimilar to allow a meaningful quantitative examination of outcomes across cohorts. These analyses indicate that our ability to conduct weight-of-evidence assessments of the epidemiologic literature on neurotoxicants may be limited, even in the presence of multiple studies, if the available study methods, data analysis, and reporting lack comparability

    Indonesia has the potential huge vegetable in the production of organic insecticide. In many areas still needed assistance to the farmer groups to produce and use organic insecticide. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of assistance in the production and use of organic insecticides in Farmers Group Sumber Urip Malang. The design study is cross sectional. Assistance performed 10 times in the production and use of organic insecticides involving 10 Farmers Group Sumber Urip I and 10 Farmers Group Sumber Urip II. Before the assistance do is the pretest and after the assistance do is posttest to knowing the knowledge and skills in the production and use of organic insecticides. Data collection method used was a questionnaire, observation, and interviews, while the method of data analysis used is the paired t-test. The results showed that; 1) there is a significant difference of knowledge production of organic insecticide before and after assistance (t-hit> t-tab0,01, 7.259 > 2.861), 2) there are significant differences of organic insecticide production skills before and after assistance (t-hit > t-tab0,01, 10.057 > 2.861), 3) there are significant differences knowledge of the use of organic insecticides before and after assistance (t-hit > t-tab0,01, 8.731 > 2.861), and 4) there are differences significant organic insecticide USAge skills before and after assistance (t-hit > t-tab0,01, 8.028 > 2.861). From the results of such research can be summed up the results of research that effective assistance to increase skills and knowledge production and use of organic insecticides
